Question about Mike Cassity?

  • Cassity is really good recruiter and seems to be a solid DB Coach at Marshall and has been a DC in years past with some success.

Is there a reason why he hasn't been asked back to UK? He is a UK alumni and Joker seems to like Ex-UK Coaches/players.

Is there bad blood or the opportunity hasn't been there to ask him if he's interested? Plus I believe he Coached with Minter at UC in 1994.

  • My guess is after the numbers he allowed at Illinois and Louisville as the DC, the hire does not look appealing. I know I would not be happy if we hired him instead of a "up and coming recruiter type" if/when Steve Brown leaves town. Maybe we can just clone Tee.....

Where would he fit in the staff?

Joker likes his staff the way it is right now. And unless Steve Brown is offered another DC job (which is still possible down the road), he doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Joker likes having him around because of the massive rapport he has with the players and because he's a good defensive backs coach. Things didn't work out with him calling the plays but that's OK.

One tidbit that really told me how much UK's players look up to Brown: I asked Winston Guy this spring about his position change and I asked him if there were any immediate drawbacks. He said he was disappointed he didn't really get to work with Brown anymore. He did say he'd keep going to Brown if he needed anything because he looks up to him and respects his opinion. That's generally how the players feel about him.

If and when Brown leaves and if we are going to go with an DB coach that has Kentucky ties, I would much rather take Rick Smith over Mike Cassity.

Now with that said I would rather have a young go getter for DB coach or a proven recruiter. Some guys I like are but do not think we have a chance with:
    Jeff Hafley - Rutgers
    Kerry Coombs - UC
    Anthony Poindexter - UVa

    Some guys worth considering:
    Sean Beckton - UCF
    Lance Guidry - WKU
Ron Stoops, Jr - Youngstown State

  • Not interested in him coming to UK. He was horrid at UL and Illinois. I Shutter at the thought. He'd make you miss the Brown days as DC.

If we are transitioning to a TCU-like defense we should go get their secondary coach that's been there for 10 years. He's still fairly young too.

Chad Glasgow just took the job at Texas Tech so I do not think that he will look to move again so soon.

If Chuck ever leaves than a name I would find interesting for a LB coach would be Neal Neathery. He is a 42 guru, I do not think that he would take anything below a DC position though has he has run his own D's for years, but that has always been on the small college scene.

  • I like Kerry Coombs, but, if a DB coaching job opens up I'd love to have Rob Manchester of Georgia Military. He'd be a great addition to an already great staff.
