Randy Sanders

  • Apparently has been hired by FSU. What a bad trade for them. Best of wishes to him. Thoughts? Also being touted as a phenom recruiter.

  • Not sure how to take this. Yeah, he coached Peyton Manning, and we all know how good he is. Not sure that doesn't have more to do with who his father is, IMHO.
Yeah, we had some success with Andre Woodson, but Woodson really didn't start playing well until his junior year @ UK. Mike Hartline was okay, but not anywhere near the QB that Woodson was, and through the injuries and all the time it took him to learn the system that Sanders plays, not sure at the end of the day if it was good or bad.
Now we've seen Max Smith go through the exact same stuff, and watched our 2 frosh QB's struggle along with a reduced playbook.
I still am not sure as to WHY the Sanders playbook has to be so big and complex. I have always questioned that. It's already tough enough for a freshman to be in college and trying to transistion from high school to college, so why would you want to make it all that much more difficult for the player to do so by making everything so complex?
Maybe it's just me, but I have never unserstood that.
Now, I lived in Tallahassee for almost 5 years, during the end of the good Bowden years, and I can tell you this: if FSU starts struggling on offense like we have for so many years because of the complexities of the offense, Sanders may get ridden out of town on a tarred-and-feathered-rail. Those folks there are not going to put up with a struggling offense like we did for so many years. JMHO, but if FSU struggles on offense, Sanders will not last long there. The folks in Tallahassee can be quite brutal when they are not doing well.

  • Yes my thoughts exactly, and when reading the message boards of the FSU site, no one knows who he is!!! They are pretty upset about it, which is understandable. But give the guy a chance, he is not even there yet. Also does he have any ties to FL recruiting? I am not too sure that he does.

  • Probably for the qb coach position, no way Jimbo would hand over the reigns to him

    Why so serious?

  • The words phenom recruiter and Randy Sanders do not go together.

  • He wasn't a bad recruiter. In fact, he found and recruited the best all around football player I ever saw at UK, Randall Cobb.

  • Randy was a pretty good offensive co, They had a lot of bad luck this year with the QBs or the offense would have been a lot better. did what he had to do and call a very scaled down playbook because of it..

  • If as QB's coach, I totally understand. If it's as OC, the verdict isstill out. You do have to consder that the talent at FL St will be considerably higher than at UK, so the offense he ran is likely to be more succesful. One of my biggest beefs with Joker's regime was that we stubbornly called the same plays over and over again, despite not having the personel to execute them. The personel to execute will be at FL St, so it could be a good match.

  • On Monday turn on Bill King and listen to what he has to say about Sanders if this hire is indeed true.

Can't vouch for Sanders as a coordinator but he's a very good position coach. FSU will be running Jimbo's offense with Jimbo calling the plays. Randy is a very good coach and the 'noles will be glad they have him.

  • Just to add he would be coaching running backs more than likely. James Coley will likely move from coaching tightends to quaterbacks and he is already the offensive coordinator even though Jimbo calls the plays.

  • Randy was not the problem. Joker was the problem.

  • He is a very good QB coach. Outside that, I wouldn't want him for anything else. He couldn't hack it as OC at UT and he couldn't do it here.

And whoever said phenom recruiter has lost their mind. If he was a phenom we would have at least got several 4 star players every year. We wouldn't have been loading up on 2 and 3 star talent. Really, phonom recruiter? Laughable. And I'm curious to see if he will be coaching RB's as someone said. You've been known a lot of your career for being a QB coach and now you will be coaching RB's. Well, they should know how to catch a screen pass pretty damn well by the time he is finished with them.

In all seriousness I do wish him luck. I like the guy. I'm just not sure where all of this praise is coming from all of a sudden. And to further my point, if he was that great of a recruiter and coordinator don't you think he could have landed a little higher profile job coming from UT than UK? I do not know what he was paid at UT and I may be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet he took a paycut coming to UK as well. Phenom recruiters and coaches don't normally have to look too hard to find good jobs with good pay. UK was neither of those at the time.
