Re-watching the SEC Media Days analysis of Kentucky

  • Not impresses by Charlie. Franklin took a 2 win program and in 1 year went to a bowl and is recruiting outrageously good. Completely turned the culture around. I'm impressed by that. Not comparing KY success to Florida. Just pointing out he took a completely different scheme and style and had success rather quickly. There's plenty of other examples of first year success without that kind of talent. Hudspeth(spelling? ) at Louisiana Lafayette comes to mind.

  • As it often is, the truth is in the middle with Franklin. There's no question Vandy has a different feel to them and buzz. They expect to win every game now. As those who play competitive golf know, it is not easy to completely change your confidence and mindset. He's recruiting like a rock star right now. We'll see if these players stick with Vandy until signing day, but the fact that big names have Vandy in their top 5/3 is impressive.

    BUT...

Vandy is actually a pretty easy sell. The campus is awesome, the city is awesome, the school is awesome. As for the girls...there are better places... but everything else is great. Anybody that has somewhat a personality to them can get people to listen to a Vandy pitch based on those things alone.

He took an experienced team, won two conference games against the two worst teams in the SEC and beat his four OOC teams. Yawn. Joker's first year was actually better, as at least we won against a top 10 team and Louisville was a better OOC than any Vandy beat last year.

Has Franklin turned out to be a great hire for Vandy? Aboslutely. Has he surpassed Joker and forever left us in the dust? Hell no.

Exactly. I wish he would have lost as much production now in year two as UK lost to keep things even more similar. It is amazing how some of you people seem to want to give benefit of the doubt to every coach in America except the one coaching YOUR team.

Its not a turn around when you have a losing record. Did they get better? Sure. Its hard not to when you suck that bad. Is there a lot of "talk" going on at Vandy? Sure. If Franklin wins this year and they go 8-4 or even 7-5 recruits will stick. If he goes 5-7 or 6-6 then it is still the same Vandy. How ridiculous is it to say there has been a turn around, when its been one year and that one year was a losing record. That tells you how truly terrible Vandy was and still is.

3-7 over their last 10 games.... Turn around?....

fill their stadium for home games... Culture change?...

    SHOW EM YOUR GOLD VANDY!!!!

As i said, i like Franklin, he's a high energy guy and a great recruiter. But he hasn't at all shown an ability to coach...yet anyway. Vandy was the most penalized team in the conf...by a large margin. One of the most penalized teams in all of college football last year. 99.9% of the time something like that would fall at the feet of the coaching staff. Again, as stated earlier, Vandy did compete like men and was in every nearly every game last year and shouldve won a few more had it not been for penalties and some questionable coaching decisions, BUT as many want to point out...WINS WINS WINS right? And Vandy could only muster up 2 wins against the worst two teams in the conf.

One more question..UK wins 6 games and the fans who are happy to see us build a program with consistent bowl games are labeled "blind" "sunshine pumpers" and even "a part of the problem" but James Shula Franklin wins 6 games once and we read comments like "turned around" "culture change" and other premature ejaculations. WHY IS THIS??????

This year's team has a lot more potential than last year's did, but last year's team had some potential too, and frankly, they just failed miserably to getting close enough to achieve it. On defense we have a bit of depth and they're in the 2nd full season of Minter's tutelage. I think we're gonna be much better on "D" than anyone thinks. On offense, everything hinges on whether the damn WR's will catch a stinkin' pass. A lot of you who saw them in the spring have said they'll be better at doing so, so I will roll with that opinion, as you've seen them & I have not. Max Smith is demonstrably better @ QB than Newton, from what I saw last season. The "O" line is young, but will have some experience, size, and a bit of depth to it, so in the end, barring mass injuries, I think we'll be okay there. But where we have to succeed is with the WR's catching the ball and making yards after a catch. That happens, and we're going to win some games this year, and probably a game or two that nobody gives us a chance in right now. But the damn WR's have to do their jobs, there's no other way around it. They have to start producing. If they do not catch passes, run their routes correctly, or block downfield after a catch for each other, then we may not even win 5 games. They do perform well, I can see Kentucky winning 6 or 7 games.

Last years team had potential sure. We just didn't have a single playmaker on offense or a QB that could get them the ball. Thats what you have to have to put points on the board. Eventually our D realized that they would have to carry us down the stretch and luckily they did.

It might be the thing I hate the most for the time being how UK fans build up Strong and Franklin yet trash Joker. I can't stand it so I will continue to trash Strong and Franklin any chance I get. I have to go uber negative against them to balance out the bullshit.

  • If Joker goes winless in SEC play this year, why would anyone think the next year would be any better?

The SEC is not sitting on their hands so Joker can win a few games fella's. They are also recruiting good players and getting better.

Joker and 5 years and then thats it. Either he wins and gets a new contract or he hits the road. End of story.

Agreed. This attitude of we should be patient with a coach who goes O for the SEC blows my mind. But I think we will win some games this year and it will set us up to win more the next year.

Everyone knows if Joker doesn't win an SEC game next year that he is done, including him. No one here has stated otherwise.

...I also had to cringe time and time again when the BBN was in town for the SECT and the F4 (as much as I loved seeing my stomping ground painted blue & white instead of LSU, Bama, or Ole Miss colors) when we would get taunted by fans from other schools and the reply was "well we beat yall in basketball." I know UK fans think that's a good comeback, and it is to fan bases that care about basketball.. but those fan bases aren't in the SEC, save maybe Vandy. They laugh at us when we say wait for basketball season, because that's about as relevant to them as field hockey ...

    QFT thumbsup

And the reality is those fans don't even know they are looked down on even more so by those SEC fans for being so completely clueless!

  • I am not one to make predictions; however, I do not believe the Cats will go winless in the SEC. Go Cats!!

  • For Joker's sake he has to win. All the recruiting news is ok but eventually the tire hits the road and the excuses has to end.

But he still needs to get the time to make it to the road. The Vandy game last year made a lot of people lose faith but nothing stays the same in the SEC. UK could play better but still lose so in my mind it is not so much wins and losses this year but is the team starting to play smarter and are the players "looking" like SEC players, is the focus of the players and the coaching staff on winning, not keeping it close.
