Reasons why Cats Defense will be better in 2012.

  • Like most teams at UK, the defense will only be as good as the offense allows them to be. UK's offense last year was awful. As a result UK's defense last year was awful. The Cats, since the Claiborne and early Curry years, have not had a defense that could be relied upon to consistently shut down SEC-caliber opponents because there simply wasn't enough talent to equal the caliber of athlete on the other side of the ball. And even during the Claiborne/early Curry years, the Cats couldn't shut those teams down enough to compensate for bad offenses.

I see no difference in this defensive unit and past recent units, in the sense that I don't think you can send them on the field and ask them to consistently shut an opponent down when the UK offense is having a bad day. The defense lost the best 2 players/athletes on the team (DT and WG) to the NFL. It returns most of the DL, replaces all the LBs, and replaces most of the secondary. I don't remember a single season where the DL stayed intact for an entire season. Injuries always hit that group and cause problems because the quality (or experienced) depth usually isn't there. And while some of the replacements in the LB and secondary groups have played, this will be their first season taking a leading role.

Bottom line, UK is going to struggle on defense if the offense doesn't get better than last year. If the offense can move the ball this year and score some points, the defense numbers should improve from last year.

    Williamson
    Dupree
    Caffey
    Mosley

No way I'm taking Mosley, no way. I don't care who else you put on the list I'll take the other guy.

RV, I thought Lowery was a SS and Faulkner was a FS.

I don't know why we label them that way but we do. Our SS plays more like a traditional FS and our FS plays more like a nickel.

Hallelujah. My god Mosely was bad I though. No terrible in coverage but you could throw it right over or around him everytime. Even if he was right on top of the player he couldn't make a play on the ball. Constantly had his back turned. Burden IMO was nothing special. He was OK at best. Caffey has the chance to be much better. Notice the staff didn't compare Caffey to Burden. They compared him to Trevard Lindly but bigger and more physical.

The funny thing is, 2 years ago at SEC Media Days I was talking to Locke at the local "after-party" and I asked him who would be the big surprise player over the next year or 2. Without hesitation, he said Mosely. He said the team was always amazed if a pass was completed anywhere near him in practice, b/c he was so good in coverage and in making a play on the ball. He said Mosely was about to take the SEC by surprise. I have never seen a worse prediction.

Who would you take: Williamson or Sneed Dupree or Wilson Caffey or Burden Rice or Mosley

Williams and Dupree are no brainers, but the corners worry me. Caffey on experience but I would still take him. Rice scares me becasue of his lack of size. I can't believe his program height of 5' 10" is anywhere near accurate, he just looks so short out on the field. He is going to have matchup problems when he goes up against some of the taller, physical receivers in the league. I would take Burden as field corner and take a chance on Caffey on boundary corner as he has a very big upside IMO.

I wish we could get to the point where every corner on the roster is athletic enough to return punts if need be. At Corner you should have the speed, physicality, and elusiveness to return punts. Mainly because you have to be able to keep up with WR's that have that kind of athletic ability. Obviously instincts play a big part but ultimately I want big super athletic strong kids.

Tell us your thoughts about the deffence.

Not sure what u want but I'll give it a shot. I dont do the long got to read forever post so here goes.

1 our d-line will be bigger faster & stonger plus we should have depth that we didnt (seem) to jave last yr.

    2. LBs will be freed up to use thier speed because of the d-line. And we have a few men that really "split" time toward the later part of the yr that should step right in, & Bud with a yr of strengh and conditioning with rock hes a beast!

3 may get alot of flack but this statement but oh well. Our dbs and safety play last yr was as bad is I've seen. So how the hell could they get worse now that Brown is gone and Cassity is here? If u dont agree with this thats fine but (seems like) almost every time we had 3rd and long last yr I would think the other team would make it cause I haf ZERO confidents in our secondary.

Now as far as what i said a about the offense giving our D a break, I stand behind that 100%. DT & WG were great for us last yr, and will be missed no doubt, but if our offence does its job no way do those to men have those kind of # of tackles.

4 MINTER & CASSITY a full yr with minters system in place and our dbs learning from Cassity not brown.

    Sorry if thats to long

Just curious, because once such a post is made (as in the post above this one), every post afterward will be default VIP unless someone notices and removes the default check in the subscribers only box. Subscribers (such as myself) will be able to read regardless and will often fail to notice. Then, a good non-VIP thread like this will turn VIP leaving everybody else out.

    Just sayin'.
