Rebounds?

  • I haven't seen the stat sheet but it seems to me that for our size advantage the boys let a lot of easy rebounds get away from them. I still just don't see them being aggressive or tough enough on the boards. Noel did a pretty good job but Poythress and WCS just seem to be watching a lot instead of crashing the boards and putting a body on somone. I'm sure they will get better as they go but they should be grabbing more rebounds than they are especially against a team like last night who was also missing their big man. Do you think these new players just haven't adjusted to the physical nature of the college game or what is the problem?

  • this team is horrible rebounding team.

Nerlens at this point is decent rebounder, not a strong one. I would have to say out of the past 4 years, he is the weakest. COusin, Jorts, Davis are all better.

Wiltjer at this point is poor rebounder. Pat, Jones * 2 are all noticeably better.

Poythress at this point is a decent rebounder. Better than Miller, but noticeably worse than MKG.

We should have no lost in rebounding match to Maryland. We should have destroyed rebounding against Duke. Against Lafayette it should have been never ending rebounding for us.

  • what do you attribute it to? is it toughness? laziness? lack of fundamentals? I just don't see how they can have as much trouble as they do, I mean one of the very first things I learned in jr. pro basketball was how to block out and rebound. It's not rocket science and you don't have to be a great athlete to rebound.

  • I agree with wildmoon. This team is not working on the boards. In my opinion, it is more than a matter of size, it is a matter of desire and effort.

Through 3 games, this team is getting 30.5% of the available offensive rebounds. The national average for several years has been 33% At the defensive end, this team is getting 60.3% of available rebounds, and the national average has been 67%.

Last year's team averaged 37.9% offensive and 68.7% defensive.

In 2011, the averages were 34.3% and 69.3%
In 2010, the averages were 41.0% and 68.0%

In short, a strong rebounding team will get more than 2 out of 3 missed shots by their opponents, and get more than 1 out of three of their own misses. This team is not doing either.

  • Fundamentals and attitude. Look what a 6'6" power forward can do in the NBA with just those two attributes.

  • I think the biggest problem with our rebounding is just what Cal has discussed ... the tendency of multiple players to all go for the block at the same time that results in 2 or 3 guys out of position for the rebound. And this is something that Cal will clean up. We've seen multiple examples of Noel, WCS and Poythress all going for the block on the same shot attempt leaving a couple out of position instead of letting Noel go for the block and then WCS and Poythress blocking out for the rebound.

Exactly. IMO because of the success of last year's team with AD and Terrence, this team seems to want to emulate them in blocks. They are trying too hard. Coach will take care of that.
