Reclassification or is there another option?

  • Today there was another player in the 2014 class that UK was recruiting that has announced that he will be reclassifying to the class of 2013 and that is Dakari Johnson. DJ became 1 more in a string of young men who have recently decided to accelerate their dream of playing in the NBA a year earlier. I just cant help but think there must be a better way to deal with the ever increasing desire of HS seniors wanting to get to the NBA w/o making a 1 year stop off in college. Are there very many people out there that thinks Andrew Wiggins really needs to play in college for 1 year instead of declaring right away for the draft? Arent there several young men that are in the same situation as Wiggins, I believe there are. So what can be done to help the players that are good enough to skip college and go straight into the draft/ Well the NBA could allow seniors to do that and those that choose to go to college would have to stay 2 to 3 years before they can declare for the draft. What other options are there, please suggest other ideas or variations of the one I have already listed.

  • It's the new thing to do. When the NBA changed the rules that players had to be out of high school for a year before they could apply for the draft, players started looking for a quicker way to earn their money. Some started going over seas. It worked for some (Brandon Jennings) and not for others (Jeremy Tyler). Now, players are skipping their last year of school. You have to start preparing for that early.

    But dont you think it would easier for everyone involved if the NBA just changed the practice and let the HS seniors declare for the draft like they used to although it could really end up hurting a lot of kids who listen to the wrong people or have an exagerated sense of their B-BALL ability?

  • Well yea, but it is probably better for the NBA to not do that. Players don't develop in the NBA. They are expected to already be developed. The NBA, as is every professional sports league, is a marketing machine. They promote their big names.

    Who had more hype: high school Anthony Davis or college Anthony Davis? Would all of the unibrow stuff be so popular and marketable?

    I think thats agreat idea and one that works. The better HS seniors could begin their NBA career right away and the rest that choose to attend college could come really close to getting their degree and learn the game more fully and the fans could actually get to enjoy a group of players that get better each year and maybe then you would see another school have a Dynasty like UCLA did all those years ago. As good as KY has been and as good as they will continue to be they will never be the Dynasty that UCLA was those 12 years in a row.

  • I love when I type out an elaborate post and it doesn't go through...

    I am a big fan of the baseball rule. However, there are so many kids apt to jump early that have no business doing so. I think they should be graded like the NFL does BEFORE the draft and not after they have to submit their name. Most high school kids are not mature enough, mentally or physically, to compete in the NBA out of high school.

  • I believe that in the baseball draft high school kids can go through the draft and if they don't sign with the pro team that drafted them then they are still eligible to compete in college. If basketball adopted a version of that then the kids would know where they stood. Then if they go to college they can't be drafted again until they are juniors or seniors.

    I think straight out of high school OR 2 years of college would do the trick. 2 years is enough for most elite talents.

    Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and it has made all the difference (Frost).

    That is true, but I don't like how it leaves the NBA teams hanging. MLB teams get 40+ picks. NBA gets two, sometimes more, sometimes less.

    Although I like the baseball rule what you suggest would make more sense to the young men who choose to go to college and not straight to the NBA.
