Recruiting Ohio for Football players

  • It seems to me that the Cats are trying to recruit more football players from Ohio than they have in the past. Could this be the Minter and Cassity influence? I believe both have good contacts in Ohio and have recruited the state successfully before.

I have never understood why UK hasnt had better success in Southern Ohio because there is a lot of Kentucky transplants there and it is close to UK.

I suspect that some of it is that a lot of African American familys moved out of the south during the Jim Crowe days and still are leary of their status there.

  • Kids in OH like to stay in the Big 10. Just like kids in Georgia like to stay in the SEC. Here are some stats on the OH Kids.

    - OF Rivals top 25 players in OH, only three of th top 25 kids went outside the Big 10 to go to another BCS confernece school. (2 to Oregon and 1 to Notre Dame, which might as well be the Big 10).

    - Cincinnati after just wnning a share of the BE only was able to sign 5 of the top 60 players with the # 29 being the highest ranked player.

    - No school outside the Big 10 did well signing OH kids. Pitt got 2, Oregon got 2 and Tennessee got 2. But only Oregon got a highly ranked kid.

  • It's because too often we have sent inept coaches to recruit Ohio. Brown was our point man there... WTH? Cassity and Minter are going to crack that nut for us and get us a good foothold.

We used to recruit Ohio very well, up until the 90's anyway.

  • UK needs to keep getting to bowl games and hit OH hard for several yrs and try to build trust with the high school coaches there. SEC teams in the south don't have to recruite OH, they have enough talent down south already. UK would do very well to hit southern OH and IN very hard.

  • Glad to see someone else on the stump for recruiting southern Ohio. I've been singing that sing for years but no one at UK has listened. They've only gone south--Ga or Fla--depending on who the coach is.

That's because there is more talent ib the deep south (FL, GA, AL, MS and LA) than anywhere else, and the kids down here eat, breathe and sleep SEC football. The key US, only so many of them can go to their in-state SEC schools. Kids in OH and IN aren't dying to go to the SEC unless its a power program. They're just not.

I think we certainly should recruit OH, but not at the expense of kids in the deep south who are DYING to play in the SEC. One state (OH) where an anti-SEC sentiment prevails or an entire region of talent where the kids dream of playing SEC ball from childhood....the decision is a simple one to me.

  • The problem is that they dream of playing for their home state schools not UK. UK gets mostly the players those schools dont want.

I will take the scraps of AL, Auburn, UGA, UF, etc. over the scraps from Big 10 country every single day of the week. It's not even close. The kids in the deep sought are dying to play in the SEC, even if that means their home state school doesn't offer.

I will agree with ya my friend I live in S.Carolina in the winter and they have so much more talent in that state than in KY. GA, Fla and Bama have even more talent than SC. wow.

  • Here is where the SEC domination of the Big Ten should come into play to help UK land some of Ohio's top talent. SOME , not too many because of their loyalties to OSU, but a smart kid who wants to compete against the likes of the SEC and prove that he is ready for the NFL could be swayed to UK. Ohio is far and away the most fertile football player producing state that borders Kentucky. There may be more talent come out of Ohio than Kentucky, Tennesee, West Virginia,Indiana, Illinois and Missouri combined. UK should be able to get 4 or 5 out of Ohio every year.

The thing is what 4 or 5. 4 or 5 4 star players ???? Just like inthe south why would a kid want to go to UK when the school he loves growing up offers him a scholy ???? A kid in OH will go to OSU or ND in a heart beat over UK. Facts are Facts

Or Michigan or Mich St, or Wisconsin or Iowa. Those are all good programs. Still we need to recruit Cincy at the least.

What is your suggestion then that they dont even try because it is difficult? My reply to you is cant never did anything.

Everyone I assume wants recruiting to improve but it isnt going to happen unless the staff steps up and goes for the gold instead of just being satisfied to just participate.
