Reese Phillips and Jaleen Battle contacted by Stoops

  • Was informed he would be evaluated by the new OC.
per Keith Cawley, a reporter from the local TV station I believe.

    per twitter

Reese Phillips talked to new Kentucky coach Mark Stoops for first time today. Stoops said he'll be evaluated when OC spot is finalized.

Tough spot for Phillips, who is graduating early and planned to enroll at UK in January. Kind of wait and see, but thinks it will work out

  • OL Justin Day to be re-evaulated too if im not mistaken. Only read it here..so dont hold me to this 100%.LoL.
You had to think this was coming, and though it could be thought unfair to the kid, Stoops was brought here because he can recruit as well as coach, I think around 4 of the current commits could be re-eval'd. You have to think MacGinnis still good to go..we need a PK bad. Darren Dowdell told by Stoops he couldn't wait to coach him and get him here on campus. So this is good news..kid can play ball. Joker did bring in some good talent. Bodkin firm contacted commit as well.

How many players can we have for this class. ????

Think it all depends on who we can add that would be better than the players we have commits from at this point.

  • I'll be surprised if we don't ink the full 25 for this class. I expect there to be some attrition.

Yall might want to catch Reese Phillips in the Toyota East West All Star Game this Saturday Dec. 8 and 1PM CST. The game will be televised by TN PBS's and ESPN3. Available at TSSAAnetwork.com and ESPN3.com.

This kid is one you don't want to get away. Probably more of a pro style QB, but a legitimate dual threat. If Randy Sanders signed him after one visit, you can bet he saw something special.

Signal Mountain High School was just 7-3 this year and was put out in the first round of the playoffs. Primarily because we were in a rebuilding year, starting 12 sophomores. This was just Reeses second year at QB, because we had a very good QB his first two years, who led us to a state championship in 2010. Reese played WR, TE, and safety his first two years.

Reese committed early so he wouldn't have to go through the dog and pony show and wouldn't have to worry about his stats this year. He remains firm in his commitment to UK.

We run a wingT offense with some extra play action thrown in, so a QB isn't going to have record numbers. Nevertheless, in the 2012 regular season of 10 games he was 132 of 186 for 71% completion rate. 1895 passing yards, 21 TD's, 4 INT's for a rating of 189.5
Sorry but I don't have his running stats.

I'm not family, just an avid Signal Mountain Booster. Reese is the kind of kid you have to meet and watch in person. I hope Stoops takes the time to really evaluate this kid before making a decision.

  • Reese should get some good playing time in the all star game. The other two East QB's are injured, so I think he may be the only QB on the East side. The game is in Cookeville, TN at Tennessee Tech if anybody wants to see him in person.

He will also be playing in the Tennessee / Kentucky Border Bowl January 12, 2013 at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg.

  • Phillips goes 10 for 10, for 94 yards and one TD in the East West All-Star game. This was sharing possessions with another QB. TV announcers said Stoops had talked to Reese again reassuring him about the committment. Anybody hear anything?

I DVR'd the game and watched it. Very nice game by Phillips. There weren't any attempts that required arm strength, but there were a couple of tough throws that required great touch and he put them on the money. One good scramble where he picked up a 1st down and took a good shot but hopped up with no problems, and there was a nice play where he made a great one handed grab of a terrible shotgun snap and was able to keep his cool and complete the pass. He was the East Offensive MVP. Also, this was the first time I had seen him in person since he played safety as a soph. in the 2010 TSSAA Group AA title game. I think he's a guy who could play multiple positions.
