  • If I'm not mistaken Signal Mountain is one of the best teams in TN, or was last year.

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

  • JDrum, does anyone have any footage on this guy? I'm scratching my head a little bit about this commitment, given his listed height and ratings on sites other than 247.

Did he camp here last week?

I've seen some tweets by some people, and Barton who sometimes stops by, says that he is another 'diamond in the rough from TN' that we have been able to unearth. Something tells me that he will see a rise in his status and rating throughout the year. I like the commitment myself.

    I've seen him listed at 6'3 215 (247), 6'3 210 (Rivals), 6'4 211 (Scout) and 6'2 215 (video below).

Not sure why that makes you scratch your head. Solid enough size, IMO.

I just checked his video out, he's deadly accurate with a very strong arm. His HS runs the Wing-T but throw it all over the lot, with a strong play-action game... I like that. This kid is also athletic, (you have to be to play qb in the Wing-T)... I love this pick-up, 70% completion percentage speaks for itself... Now lets get Timmons, Jo Jo and maybe even Q James for ILB...

Go watch his highlight video... That's all you'll need to see. Just click the little video camera icon on his profile on 247... Randy Sanders likes him so I like him... He's a athlete as well.

I don't think he's been to Lexington prior to these past two days. I'll make sure and ask him. He's going to call to talk some more about his commitment when he gets off campus.

  • just judging from that youtube video, and I know it's a highlight video and everybody looks good in highlight videos. But he was able to put the ball out in front of the WR's and give them the opportunity to catch it in stride and gain extra YAC. Threw a very catchable ball, and loved his ability from what I saw to scramble and I think it was at about the 3:00 mark, but gave the defender a stiff arm and then threw a strike to the WR for a touchdown.

Dude has a hell of an arm, from his videos. Looks to be a very accurate passer, too. Like this pick up too.

  • Certainly seems to throw down field well with accuracy. Hits guys in stride. Can't teach that touch.

and seems to get his shoulders square and gets his body behind his throws even when under pressure and on the move

  • He is a stud. Not overly impressive offer sheet yet, but he has a CANNON for an ARM, is really athletic, has good size, and is tough as nails (has played a lot of D and refuses to get off the field).

    mjdotson

  • Having watched the videos, he does look like a good prospect. His game film footwork appears to be quite a bit better than his combine footwork, as he didn't add nearly as many hitches when he was making reads or throwing timing patterns. That may have something to do with being quite a bit more comfortable with drops in his offense, compared to standard drops at a combine.

He throws a pretty darn accurate ball and can spin it downfield pretty well. Loved his placement on most of the timing routes. I'm on board with this guy, regardless of rankings. After some of the problems last year with QB production, getting numerous quality arms (and heads) in the offensive backfield is not a bad thing.

As for his height, just commenting on the 6'2" measurement, as it's on the low-end of "prototypical" pocket passer types.

    JDHLaw11

  • And he does a pretty good job of getting the ball to turn over on the longer throws.

    dustarm20

  • I live in Chattanooga and this kid is the real deal.....

He lost 2 really good WRs last year, but he can make all the throws.

If I'm not mistaken Signal Mountain is one of the best teams in TN, or was last year.

They won the state title at 2A two years ago. Last year they were steam rolling a lot of teams in 4A (they skipped 3A to avoid Alcoa literally) and then had a bunch of wins stripped because they had an ineligible player at RB. Were 6-1 at the time and ranked either #1 or #2 in the state at the time.

Love the look of the ball that Phillips throws and it appears to me we just beat a lot of teams to getting on board with him. Another thing I love about him, just like I did with Towles, is the kid is a winner. He comes from a program that wins a lot and is likely to have the attitude that he has to win games because it's all he knows. That intangible is one that every QB we try to get should have.
