Not surprised at all by these rumors. MM is a fine coach that's rising in the coaching ranks...He'll make the BCS jump soon.
But the UK Admin must understand that, even if the legislature/UK comes through w/ funding for upgrades to the program going forward... If they go second tier w/ this hire, season ticket sales will be way down in 2013... And McIntyre is a second tier name (at best!)
W/ that being the case..I'm not sure he has the stones & connections to make it happen at UK, w/ the UK FB fan base as restless & fickle as we are...If he goes 1-11 / 2-10 in yr1...The base would be gone for several yrs to come. No one would invest until the renovations were done...And by then (yr 3)...both McIntyre & Barnhart would be on a very hot seats to produce.
That's before we even talk about how he'd recruit at UK vs how he's recruited at SJSU. (who knows what kind of staff he'd put together.)
The UK establishment has to understand that UK is the SJSU of the SEC, cept w/o the natural recruiting advantages CA offers. SJSU has a population of over 7M w/in the Bay Area (no more than 2hr drive away from SJSU's campus)...Are w/in a 7hr car ride of another 20M+ in SoCal / LA Metro....And that's w/o ever leaving the state of CA. So, There's 100's & 100's of D1 athletes produced every yr (more when counting JuCo's). UK does not have those natural recruiting advantages.

Blanton Collier left UK over 50yrs ago. And though he left UK w/ a over-all winning record...He was well under .500 in the SEC, even w/ Knox, Shnelly, Shula on his staff.
Which plays right into your "UK FB is a systematic failure" quote from above...BP is so far from the status quo at UK...It's probably the BEST choice they could go w/...As they have not succeeded when sticking to the conventional wisdom of those in charge the last 60yrs.

vhcat1970,
I actually favor Butch Jones...I think he's a guy that has the personality & creativeness to succeed at UK. I like his coaching style, his system & think his staff has connections in areas that UK needs to expand recruiting to, to make the next leap. I'd be all for him as UK's next coaching hire! However, If BP has interest in the UK job..I think UK would be stupid not to make a serious effort to sign him... (discounted 6yr, clause ridden contract w/ little/no severance for "w/ cause" firing & big buy-out on his part, to keep him from looking to green pastures.)....As flawed as he is, He's a guy that will put butts in seats... & is the kind of demanding prick that is needed to get the most out of the talent Joker has left. (and he did leave talent!)...If he flopped, no one could blame the UK Admin for taking a chance. no one would blame Mitch for trying.

You want to look at Jerry Claiborne's record at Va.Tech and Maryland? You want to think about about how the Bill Curry hire was national news or John Ray was the architect of Aria Parsigian's great Notre Dame Defenses?
Please explain to me what set's Petrino apart from anyone other than his character.

Sure, We can discuss ancient history if you like..But it's 2012...And UK just finished a 2-10 (0-8 in the SEC) football season.
UK is now in a 14team SEC w/ a Coaches, Facilities & Recruiting arms-race occurring. EVERY OTHER SEC PROGRAM is invested in FB success...Even VANDY. So, UK can either step-up & play big boy FB...Jump full bore into doing what's needed to succeed...or they can continue to be the btm dwellers of the conference... As they have been for the better part of 60yrs.
What sets Petrino apart from the above list of former UK coaches??? He's won games in the SEC in this decade...And has taken 2 of his teams to BCS bowls. (Curry had a losing record at GTech & UK..So what if he could win at ALA w/ ALA talent/recruitng (but couldn't beat AUB & had his teams play very inconsistent FB)...You or I could probably win 8games a yr coaching at ALA!

IF IF IF...If my aunt had nuts, she'd be my uncle!
Every coaching hire has risk attached. Petrino's no different. That's what a clause ridden contract is for. That's why lawyers write contracts that mitigate exposure to potential litigation...You take non-FB staff related hiring out of his realm/pwr structure. You limit his influence in the ATH DEPT. You cover the universities assets...And you lock him into an iron-clad contract, much like ARK did!
I think UK is stupid to not take the chance, when he's right here in LOU and wants the job...Sure, He's a tainted product...& it's 100% due to his own ambitions, his ego & the mid-life crisis event that went public. Everyone knows it...it's been out there forever... Frankly, that's one of the only reasons UK even has a shot at getting a coach of his pedigree..
Furthermore, He's likely to only get 1 more chance at a BCS job... & if he screws it up, he'll end-up in DII / DIII / NAIA or out of ball all together...He knows that!!! So, I'd expect you'd see a humbled man. Same demanding prick on the field but humbled off it... One only asking for a chance to prove himself a changed, better man. One that would be on much better behavior, w/ Momma Petrino / kids / family friends being w/ him. And more thankful than ever for his opportunity to coach SEC FB.
He'd either succeed (and maybe leave) or get canned (for failing)...Pretty much no different than any other potential coaching candidate!
