Ryan Harrow may be out for Duke game

  • Ryan Harrow has not practiced since the Maryland game and won't travel to Atlanta for the Duke game if he can't practice this afternoon. He's still battling the flu. John Calipari said in retrospect he probably shouldn't have traveled him to Brooklyn.

Matt, you think if Harrow doesnt go Cal will go with Archie and Mayes or maybe Polson and Archie?

All three of those guys should play, but Julius Mays also missed Sunday's practice because his eye was too swollen after taking a shot in the Maryland game. His status also up in the air right now.

As good as he played last Friday, I believe Polson has earned the right to step in and play PG when needed. He was BY FAR the best PG on the floor last Friday. I am not worried at all about us having to play him at PG over the next game or 2 until Harrow gets well and can get to playing like he needs to be.

I just hope people don't get too down on Harrow. We go through this every year where our new starting PG looks like crap early in the season, everyone worries he may not be the answer, and then as the season progresses he wakes up and gets it together. I know Harrow has been in the system for a year, but he is just now running it in live game situations where it counts.

Given that he hasn't played in a real, live game that matters before the Maryland game, I'd have to say that all that is wrong is that the rust hasn't been knocked off yet. Harrow will be fine. He just needs to play, get the experience within the DDMO, and just do what Coach Cal tells him to do.
It will come, it will happen. Gotta let him take some lumps and figure it out.

  • Polson stepped up last game, and it was obviously not a "fluke" performance. The kid is in the rotation now, so it's time for the same "switch" to flip on Jon Hood. If he plays in games like he does in practice he will get minutes, and who better as an opponent than DUKE could arouse that kind of performance from a former "Mr. KY Basketball"? Mays and Harrow are crucial to this team, but if Polson and Hood can average 10-12 minutes a game between them (which NOBODY could foresee) then I truly believe we have a shot at #9 this season! pray

By no means am I giving up on Harrow but like I have said before I am a little concerned. The other point PGs that have started the season were a tad shaky but I never felt concerned about them I just cant say the same for Harrow. I had high hopes for him and still hope he does come around but I guess we will just have to wait and see how it goes. But if Polson continues his steady play he and Harrow may share the position on a more equal basis.

  • No afternoon update on Ryan Harrow. Had some blood work done. Waiting on results. Likely won't practice today.

  • Harrow missing this game might not be entirely negative. One, it will give Polson more PT so he's more ready at backup point. Two, if he plays and doesn't do well and criticism rolls in, how will he respond? After watching All Access I believe Harrow might be a tad fragile emotionally. It might be best for all parties involved if he doesn't play this game. Then he comes back and learns against so weaker competition before ratcheting it up against ND, Baylor & UL.

Of course, I could be looking too deeply into the situation, but that's kind of the impression I have at the moment.

  • So he's had the flu for like 2 weeks? I'm not sure about this whole flu thing. Maybe he's just not ready for primetime. Could be Cal doesn't want to throw him out there until after the Duke game when the cupcake portion of the schedule kicks in. I mean he played some last game. I've had the flu. You've all had the flu. If it's real flu with the fever, nausea, chills etc there's no way he could be out there playing like that. I couldn't. I've also never had a flu last more than 3 or 4 days. 5 max.

  • Dont be surprised if Goodwin is at the PG position at the start of the game tommorow night with Mays at the SG spot. It might be good to see Goodwin at the PG from the beginning and play 27 or 28 minutes there and move him over to the SG spot when Polson comes in although Cal just might bring in Hood to play the 2 spot for a few minutes depending on foul situation.

Harrow has played ten minutes this season with the flu....we have zero basis to be concerned about the kid at this point.

Cal will play the most talented player...the other will sit the bench. Polson is a nice story, but he's going to sit the bench this year. Cal will use him to motivate Harrow, but he's not going to be playing significant minutes in a month.

Goodwin will run backup at the point when this gets sorted out, not Polson. This is the same thing Cal has done the past three years with Bledsoe and Lamb.

Sorry, Cat fans I know I'm going to be hated now for calling it as it is and not giving the KY boy the benefit of the doubt, but we all know Cal doesn't go deep and we all know Cal plays the most talented players only...even if that means only six guys play. Like I said, it's a nice story and let's enjoy it while it last, but Polson will be back to mop up duty in a month. Nothing wrong with that, we all have roles.

    jamccain

  • I completely agree with the exception that Polson won't see time at backup point. I'm on record before the Maryland game saying that I liked how he's played when in significant PT. He only reiterated my feelings and statements with that game. He absolutely doesn't hurt you when he's in. That's a plus.

AG will play the majority of minutes at backup PG or starting PG. We agree on that. I just think that we will see more of Polson than you might think.

I cant believe what I just heard, Digger Phelps just predicted that WCS will be an All American at the end of the season. Phelps went on and on about how great Wcs is going to be this year and again said he thinks Willie will be an All American at the end of the season. Who would have thought Digger would say something nice like that about a player on KYs team.

You get an upvote for this simply for the reason that I'd sit there and ask the same question. When would Digger ever say something good about a UK player. Then again, what does it matter what that moron says? moon

  • I'm not sure WCS will be an AA but Digger is correct in praising him. For once he's right on something. Not sure there is another player in college basketball quite like WCS. Once he fully gets it he's gonna be amazing. Can't wait for that day. This team as a whole and WCS is a big part of the reason why has huge upside.

And Yes people need to chill on making too many assumptions regarding Harrow and Polson at this time. Lets at least give it a couple more games.

Maybe it is just that simple, he has the flu. I was told years ago that those who can find conspiracy in everything, have mental issues, I truly believe that.

You are 100% spot on with this assessment. As I've said before, the poster you are referring to is more optional than a woman at the peak of menopause and loves hyperbole more than a crack addict likes his pipe.

You're right about conspiracy theorists. I don't believe in any conspiracy theories. It's weird. I think Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK. I don't believe in ghosts or mermaids or bigfoot or ufo's or doomsday prophesies or Nostradumbass or 911 conspiracies or any other nonsense. Ask anyone on here that knows me. I make fun of conspiracy theories and the people that believe them quite often. I'll be glad when Brad Meltzer, Alex Jones, and Glenn Beck die. All that being said he didn't look like he had the flu to me. He has also had the flu for a pretty long time. They also said during the game that Harrow was suffering from "flu-like symptoms", not the flu. Maybe he does have the flu. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility and sanity that he has the jitters bad and Cal is letting this "flu-like symptoms" thing be an out for him these first 2 games.
