Sean Woods Overboard

  • Did anyone else think he was over the line when he shoved his player, basically hitting him in the back? Then he literally got into the kids face and screamed bloody murder for almost an entire timeout. Anyone know what the kid did? I think he fouled but I didn't see if he did anything to deserve that kind of outburst. I'm fine with yelling and getting in a kids face. I draw the line at getting physical with a kid. My opinion is that if a coach can't compose and control himself enough not to strike a kid he shouldn't be coaching.

  • About what time did it happen? Missed the game and have watched the replay and so far missed it.

  • Just saw it. The kid fouled out. Must have been a major contributor. Can't fault Woods for jawing at him, but I do agree you should keep your hands off the kids.

  • ESPN running with this story now, I think Sean is going to face some type of reprimand from Morehead as this continues to pick up steam.

I saw it but couldnt figure out why he lost his cool with the kid. He did hit him in the back although some would call it a shove. It was way over the top and I agree with another poster that Woods will face some kind of punishment. I know if that was my son he wouldnt be playing for Woods any longer. Woods just kept going after the poor kid for quite a long time and I really felt for the guy. I didnt even see him do anything wrong, but I could have missed it. Please let us know if you saw something that the kid did to warrant such a reaction.

His future coaching is now done. No top program will touch him for yrs.\

If they don't fire him he has a chance to win there but he cant do this again ever.

It was reported by Andy Katz that there was another instance of Woods jumping on a player in a game Andy Katz had seen and it may very well mean he may be gone and your right after this kind of player abuse he may not coach in college again. This makes me sad because of what Woods has meant to the UK program and fans for so many years. He did make that comment about the UK players not knowing the players that came before them and what that means to all of the fans.

  • First of all, I am not a Sean Woods fan by any means. He was by far the wrong hire, they should have hired Donnies assistant at Morehead. But, taking it to this extreme is ridiculous. He put his hand on the kids back and pushed him. It was in the heat of the moment. You all act like he took a baseball bat and whacked him on the side of the head with it. What is this world coming to? If doing what he did causes you to lose your job Id say theres a good chance no coach coaching right now should have theirs. This is just another example that most peoples opinions come from the media. They try to pour fuel on a flame and make a big deal about everything and others get brainwashed by that and then try to make up their "own" prospectives about the situation. Is Sean Woods dramatic? Heck yes. Does he talk way too much? What UK guy from the 90s doesnt? But give me a break...clearly it was a slow news night.

  • Fire him? The "poor kid"? My son wouldn't play for him any longer? Huh? You guys reached those conclusions from watching your TV screen? Geesh, let's pump some more estrogen into our society.

    ShockeyFork

  • Woods really lost his shit, although I have no idea what prompted it. He just wouldn't let up, even when that kid was on the verge of tears. I watched in real time and didn't see the push, just getting in the kids face and then following him and staying in his face. It was definitely extreme. I thought the kid was going to deck him when he looked up about halfway through Woody's episode.

    BigTyrone

  • I saw it during the game and did not give it a second thought. I agree with JCHS and ShockeyFork on this, it is a non-event that will keep the press lathered for days.

  • That is kind of the point though. Whether you think its a big deal or not doesnt matter. You have to be able to maintain some sort of composure for the simple fact that you " should" know cameras and media are everywhere just waiting for you to slip up in anyway whatsoever. If you aren't capable of that then you probably wont be coaching long today.

  • Nobody knows what was said, and yes he may have blown up a bit, but coaches do it all the time. I guarantee you they talked again later after the game and that player was not offended. It happens, then u apologize and reemphasize the teaching point. Unfortunately, some crazy pc fans don't get to see that part of it lol. Non story, non issue. And I thought they looked pretty good last night, so I'm not sure why he was the "wrong" hire? Oh well, go cats. And I'll pull for more head since woods is, and always will be, a CAT

In the heat of the moment a college caliber coach should be able to control himself and not lose his mind. This isn't an isolated incident and he got physical. That is unacceptable on every level. And don't blame the media. I saw it in real time and made my judgment then without a news cycle filter. I also said at the time "Woods will have some explaining to do with some Morehead admins tomorrow". I think he should be made to apologize publicly to the kid and never touch another student again. One more chance and that's it. I'm a huge Unforgettables and Woods fan but if this week has taught me anything it's that Sean Woods is an immature idiotic embarrassment.

And to the wizard below you, yes, I draw my conclusion from watching a coach push a player and jump around and get in his face like a 15 year old thug. I wonder if either of you even watched the game or the incident in question.

  • I really see this as a non-issue. Did he maybe go overboard with his rant? Maybe. However, I'm sure that it was probably handled later in house. I know that Woods and MSU had a lot riding on this game. This was their Final Four. If they could beat UK, at UK, end the Calipari streak, it would be a GREAT lift to the MSU program and Woods coaching career. Then you add the comments made by Woods earlier. This game meant more to him than any other game from the fact he is an Unforgettable. The push wasn't a big deal. No bigger than a football coach grabbing a player's facemask and yelling at him during the game. I think we as the fan and general public have become so politically correct we have to have an opinion and judgement about everything. I'm glad MSU gave UK fits! It gives Calipari more things to point out to our Wildkittens. Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!!

  • From what I saw of it as I watched it live Woods seemed to get on him about the foul he committed. Then the player began mouthing back at Woods about something and when Woods yelled at him the player started getting up in Woods face and kinda shouldered Woods in the chest. That's when Woods really came unglued and I believe the shove happened then and yes Woods continued after him at that point. In my opinion if a player tries to get physical with the coach, which is just how saw it, I don't have a problem with Woods reaction. If I were the coach and a player tried to get physical with me he would be suspended at minimum and maybe off the team if I thought it was severe enough.

  • I just went back and watched the replay and I was wrong. Woods did shove him to begin with and even though it wasn't that much to it Woods does need to realize he has to be a little more careful with how he acts with his players. Especially when you are in the spotlight and there is not a bigger spotlight than that of Rupp Arena. The player did react aggressively as well so I will say both of them were out of line.

    mr289

  • Good job to Sean wood.

Maybe in this generation shove might be too much, but I think it was fine.

  • Was Sean Woods a bit out of line? Yes. The guy is an intense and annimated coach. Im from the old school a bit. Playing on a state championship football team as well as in the state tourney in hoops ive been straight dressed down by coaches more than a few times. Ive been dragged across the sidelines by my face mask, snatched up by my basketball jersey, and I wont bother going into some things that have gone down in practices...but as a player its just part of being coached. Woods shouldnt have shoved him in the back, but we are not talking about Bob Knight caliber antics here.

Also, there are some things being left out of this incident...
1.) This kid has played for 4 schools in 4 years. He has a wrap sheet a mile long on and off the court. He has been a serious dumbass. Woods gave this kid his last shot to play college ball in his senior year and earn a degree. This kid needs some guidance and tough love. However, maybe he wont respond to that...maybe with his history he simply isnt going to respond to anything.
2.) I was told last night that after fouling out Woods was calling for the player to come huddle up with the team, yet he continued to mosey along at his own pace. That was the reason for the shove. As the kid was walking to the sideline he began jawing ay Woods which lead to the arguing. The player then basically said "F**k you" as well as something along the lines of handling this outside the lockeroom as well as "we can make this real" which obviously set Woods completely off.

Now, I wasnt there, I didnt hear any of that. However, I trust the source of what I was told. You could definately see the kid swell up on woods as he started jawing as Woods walked away (before he went to sit down) and if you watch closely, an asst coach also reacted immediately to whatever he said as he jumped in, also began dressing down the player, and even restrained him by wrapping his arms around him. It was at that point Woods lost his shit so the player obviously said something crazy.

Im not condoning Woods shoving him in the back, however, the rest (getting in his face and going off) is common and a part of sports. Ive not heard a single player (current or former) say he should be disciplined over this. I guarentee you those making such a big deal out if this (media and mess board posters) never played real organized sports.

This is classic examples of media digging to make a story or making more of it than it should be, and over sensitive PC people commenting on a world they know very little about.

All that said, everyone has a right to their opinions whether I agree or not. Woods absolutely couldve handled the situation better, and I hope he learns from this. More importantly, I sincerely hope he is able to continue coaching at Morehead. He has that team playing very hard. And any who knows Woods knows he passionately cares about his kids.

  • The media is making a huge deal of it, but as happens often, they are only responding to one side of the story. they have the video and it looks over the edge. Now if they had the full audio of what was said back and forth, would they change their tune? It sure looked to me as if the kid had a lot to say. Tommy, we appreciate your input. If your source is correct then I don't blame Sean at all.

I did notice the player mouthing at Woods before the shove in the back. I don't think that shove was appropriate. However he would be running stairs for days if he wanted to remain on the team if I were coach. Never talk back to the coach!

    majortom714

  • Absolutely agree with getting in his face and tearing him a new one. Just not the shove. After he put hands on the kid I don't blame the kid for puffing up. I wouldn't have blamed the kid if he hauled off and decked Woods. Woods would have beaten him silly but I still wouldn't blame the kid reacting to a physical shove with a physical response. That's why coaches getting physical is so dangerous. I agree Woods shouldn't be fired over this if he takes whatever punishment he gets like a man. Whoever brought up Knight, this is exactly the kind of crap Knight pulled. And if this was Knight instead of UK alum Woods you'd all be calling bloody murder, which I'm not. I'm just saying it went too far and it can't ever happen again. You can instill old school discipline, which I love btw, and not lay hands on players. Frank Martin comes to mind.

  • A bit bad behavior by the coach. A bit overblown by the media. But let's not "reconstruct" facts. The shove came first, period. Woods was not provoked into shoving the kid. Woods wanted to beat UK seemingly at any cost (the number of fouls). Maybe next time, he will simply send the player to the bathroom for two hours ...
