None of those guys came even close to the expectations of Couch. Maybe Leaf.

Couch didn't stand a chance! If he had an offensive line that could of protected him, I bet things would have turned out differently for him. But sadly, we will never know.

Ryan Leaf definitely takes the cake. In the NBA its either Michael O, or Greg Oden. Gred Oden especially considering you could have had Kevin Durant. But there has been alot of busts that I can't remember.

I agree... when talking biggest busts, its gotta be Ryan Leaf.

I don't buy that. Most 1st year QB's find themselves in the exact same situation. You can use that one for a couple years but for an entire career? I remember when he was drafted and I argued with a guy about Couch. Like all UK fans I took Couch's side and thought he'd be great. The other guy pointed out that Couch was in the Mumme system of dumps and screens and that he didn't have the arm or accuracy to be great. I agreed to disagree with him. Looking back I'd say that guy was right and I was wrong.

Every guy on that list had higher or just as high expectations as Couch. Couch actually lead a team to the playoffs from QB, most of the guys on the list I rattled off didn't do anything in the League. Was Tim great in the NFL? No was he the biggest bust of all time, no where near it.

  • To prove my point further here's an article from the Huffington Post discussing the biggest draft busts for AFC teams, notice Courtney Brown is listed for the Browns and Tim Couch isn't discussed?

Here's ESPNs list from Page 2 of the Top 100 worst draft picks of all time regardless of sport Couch is 95 you know what's hilarious though every guy on my list is listed as a bigger bust than Tim.

Biggest busts in NFL Draft History by Athlon Sports....again no Tim Couch on that list.

Think it's pretty apparent that outside of you very few people even consider Couch the biggest bust from his draft (Akilli Smith) or his team (Courtney Brown). And that includes the majority of writers out there as well.

Even before the 2012 NFL Draft got underway, the Indianapolis Colts revealed their intention to select former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. The presumptive No. 1 pick well before the draft, Luck has been touted as a prototypical passer for years.

  • Don't forget about Joe Barry Carroll, first overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft. NBA scouts/GMs have been mesmerized by height for decades.

Well played sir. I disagree and think anyone that doesn't have Couch in their top 5 or top 10 is just wrong but you make a good argument.

  • Couch wasn't great but was put in a terrible situation there in Cleveland. Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith were much bigger busts.

Agreed. At least Couch played a little and bid some good things even though maybe very few.

You can't just look at performance to decide a bust. You have to consider expectations as well. Couch had just as many expectations and buzz as Peyton Manning. Akili Smith and Ryan Leaf didn't.

Leaf was Archie Griffin to Payton's Andrew Luck. He definitely had some buzz. Point is he was much worse than Couch.

  • Biggest NBA draft bust in my lifetime has to be Michael Olowokandi, followed closely by Kwame Brown and Darko Milicic. Another head scratcher is Nikoloz Tskitishvili. Wall has a LONG way to go to reach that sort of bust standard (and he likely never will). However, he also has a long way to go to live up to what Rajon Rondo, Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Steve Nash are doing. Part of the problem with Wall is that he's not a scorer, at least not one that will be prolific at the NBA level. I'm very anxious to see what next year's Wizards team looks like. They've finally gotten a few folks that can help him, although most of them aren't exactly people I'd pick first for my team.

Couch was never near Manning in terms of hype. He was thought to be a solid starter but not an All Pro QB from the get go like Manning was.

A lot of GMs wanted to take Leaf over Manning. Leaf was just as hyped and thought to be the better pro because he had won at Washington State while Manning hadn't won any big games while at Tennessee.

A lot of teams considered taking the bigger stronger armed Akilli Smith over Couch too.

Whether you remember it or not there's a reason almost everyone in this thread has mentioned Ryan Leaf as the biggest bust of all time. There's a reason he tops up most every list as the biggest NFL Draft bust of all time, it's because he is the biggest bust of all time and is 10 times worse than Couch.

  • This is literally (and i mean literally) the first time i have ever heard anyone make a case for anyone being a bigger bust that Ryan Leaf. His career and his life has been nothing short of a cruel comedy you would see in a movie.

Ryan Leaf.....and NO ONE has yet to even sniff being close.

Thought he had at least made a comeback to being a good person. Then you hear about him being arrested again. Definitely a cruel comedy.

Robert "Tractor" Traylor (RIP) was also a terrible pick. Went before both Paul Pierce and Dirk Nowitzki.

Actually was traded for Nowitzki. Milwaukee took Dirk at #9 and then traded him and Pat Garrity to Dallas for Traylor. Also at the time Dallas got killed for making the deal.

Wrote Dan Shanoff then of CNNSI.com: “After trading away No. 4 draft-pick Stephon Marbury last year, the Bucks get it right in ’98 by stealing the marketable and talented Robert Traylor from the Mavs for an overhyped foreign prospect.”

Scarier part a little bit of time later Dallas traded Pat Garrity for a cast off PG named Steve Nash.....poor Milwaukee.
