Senate Gives Approval for Commonwealth Stadium Renovations

  • Legislative approval for new projects at Kentucky universities continued its mostly smooth passage on Wednesday when the state Senate approved the measure 36-1.House Bill 7 allows several state universities to bond $363 million for 11 projects, including a $110 renovation of Commonwealth Stadium at the University of Kentucky. Those bonds will be paid back with university revenue rather than state General Fund dollars. The Senate changed the language of the bill slightly after it approved a committee substitute from Sen. Bob Leeper, I-Paducah, which forbids the universities from raising tuition to pay for the projects. Because of the committee substitute, the bill now returns to the House for concurrence. If the House agrees to the altered bill, which is expected, the measure will go to Gov. Steve Beshear for his signature.

At UK, in addition to the $110 million upgrade of the football stadium, the bill will allow a $65 million renovation of the Gatton Business School and a new $100 million science building. UK Athletics will pay for all of the stadium renovation and $65 million of the science building. The business school will be funded mostly through private donations.

  • It's about damn time. We need more money pumped into the stadiums and much less on student housing.

This has to be sarcasm, right? Surely it is...

  • Yes, Matt. It certainly pisses me off.

Probably not the venue for this but how is that U of L can build a$38,000,000 rec center just for students. They also surpassed their goal of raising $750,000,000 for student support and facilities.
They have a fantastic football stadium courtesy of a pizza guy and state of the art Yum Center.
The BBN may show up at games but they are broke as a one wheel trailer.

Well heaven forbid the 15,000 regular students on campus have nicer things or have dorms that are 30 years old be updated and replaced. I mean, universities only exist for the sole purpose of athletics.

Maybe I'm not understanding what/who your displeasure is aimed at but to be upset that UK has dared put money into its infrastructure instead of renovating a football stadium that's used about 10 times a year just seems way, way off base, IMHO.

That's my point. Improvements for students has been a long time coming. UK Just kept building bigger and better coal lodges. Louisville seemd to be able to make it a priority.
Far greater emphasis on the student experience down the road.

Perhaps the dumbest sequence of posts in the history of this board. Doesn't even deserve a response.
