So a buddy just told me

  • That Larry Vaught reporting that Morgan may not start next week, and that BBK is reporting Bookie's red shirt may come off.

Anyone heard anything like this at all?

Those are both stretches of what was actually said. It came from Joker's Sunday teleconference. He said Morgan would get the first team reps this week in practice but if they determine that Maxwell Smith gives them the best chance to beat South Carolina they won't hesitate to go with him. It's Morgan's job, as of now. As for Bookie, all that Joker said (in response to a question about Bookie) was that they haven't ruled out playing some guys (not specifically him) that to this point have been slated for a redshirt. He did NOT say Bookie would play.

    Thanks Matt.

Not in any way trying to start rumors, that's why I asked.

I'm surprised (and relieved) that Joker would be willing to go with Smith. I don't know who would give us a better shot to win, but Newton hasn't looked great by any stretch. I would guess the reason he's playing is because (at this point anyway) he's better at the spot.

I think the big thing from the coaches' standpoint is understanding all the checks and stuff that their offense dictates at the line of scrimmage. Smith just hasn't had to deal with any of that and has a pretty limited time in the system.

Ellis Johnson has to be licking his chops no matter who's under center.

  • I think this is telling from the coaching staff, but I don't know how good Smith will do, considering he hasn't been in the system that long.. but my Lord, he can't do much worse than Newton, can he?

  • It should never take 2 years to learn a *(a no no)* football system. No system is that complicated Some act as if UK runs complicated plays. Nuts. If Newton doesn't understand the system by now, he will never

Exactly right. I have never understood how it should take anyone two years to learn a system. If it is that complicated, then change it. Obviously it isnt to complicated because everyone defense we have played seems to know how to defend it.

  • Unfortunately at this point Max is probably a better thrower and more acccurate. Morgan cant seem to have the touch. But I guarantee you one thing: Morgan is working harder and thinking more about what he is doing because Max showed he can play if he has to and if he had the experience Morgan had think how good he could be. It helps to push Morgan. Thank God Joker played him.

  • UKs offense is complex. Woodson and Hartline didn't master it until their 4th year with the program. Both were benched in year 3. But yes, Newton should be able to complete a pass.

  • Joker has to be feeling like a complete fool at this point with all the glowing comments he made about Morgan leading up to the season.

Anyone can look good in practice and I'm sure that Joker saw a good player then, so I don't think he can be faulted for that. However, if I were him, I would in the future, hold off on the praise until the players have some real game time experience under their belts!!! :-)

  • I'm ready to mix Cobbins in and have a Randall Cobb factor in this offense. From what I gather he can do some of those things and has some intangibles that make him that kind of threat.
Lets add that weapon, because if he were as good as a Randall Cobb, he wouldn't be here for four years anyway.
Maybe Cobbins could be the ventilator for the life support that this team needs. Burn that redshirt if he's that kind of valuable. But first, brainwash him with many hours of Randall Cobb video. rumor

He's hit his receiver directly in the hands for about 20+ would-be completions this year. Sometimes he struggles with the short ones (seemingly easiest) but he throws down the field with nice accuracy.

I normally agree with you on a lot of things Jeff ... and I will give you that there have been way more drops by receivers than there should be ... but I seem to remember plenty of times this year that we've had receivers open downfield and the balls have either sailed over their heads or bounced at their feet. I don't see the accuracy that you're talking about ... at least when compared to our last several QBs at UK.

Color me unimpressed with Morgan in any facet of the game ...

  • I'm not so sure that Max isn't anything more than a pawn used as a motivator for Morgan.
I don't see him starting any game unless Newton just has a massive meltdown or GOD forbid a serious injury.

Completely agree. The receivers hasn't helped him much. IMO, his biggest problem is his ability to rally the troops. He isn't a leader, no one follow's him. IIRC, Andre struggled with his leadership role his Sophmore Year, it wasn't as big as a issue as now because Burton was a leader the day he stepped foot in Lexington. We don't have that right now. Regardless of how accurate his throw's are or aren't, UK needs a leader just as much as they need a QB.
