Some Recruiting Updates

  • Gee..thanks for the bad news..lol..seriously...it looks like the bright sunshine is clouding over quick.. I thought wed get Reon Dawson...Drennon and Nash as a package. Jo JO Kemp too..and Warfield looked like a close to a lock...now..none mabye. When MYles Nash went Rutgers..I truly believe a so called power (USC? NDame?) has swayed Drennon in the last few weeks. ONly way I saw Drennon coming was with Nash as a duo deal.
THings can change so fast. Drennon was talking about UK as his bonafied fav, and JOker's genuine approach as the big reason..sounded like a lock. I hope Im wrong..I want Drennon so bad. TE...DE..3-4 OLB. Star at any of those...I hope Joker stays on all these kids...I feel a flip or two coming...please Dermontii..talk to your young cousin Reon...a 6'2 190lb corner with sub 4.4 speed...he and Caffey would make a stellar duo at CB.
That said...I want D'Andre Wilson..the CB called Chocolate..from Myrtle Beach...and his good friend Mykal Moody from Conway. Moody looks like a Randall Cobb clone with better speed. In his highlight..Moody outruns Wilson in a breakaway run for a long TD. I also like Ade Aruna..a 6'6 230 DE with super athleticism...came to the states to play b-ball.. would make a nice project that could develop into a stud.
We lost Matt Miller to Wisconsin...just saw espnu bottom line...so that hurts a smidge.
Please..Drennon...pick Blue..Ryan Timmons...stay home and play for Joker..

  • At this point, UK should just rent some property in Florida and have 2-3 assistants live down there. cool

    Florida and Georgia annexes.

  • It will be interesting to see what happens with OL from here on out. I was initially told they would take three this season. Two are already on board. I think that could grow to four, though.

Yes they should. So many talented kids in those states. And perhaps as importantly, SEC football is king in those states, so those kids are receptive to UK. Whereas kids in Ohio are mesmerized by the Big 10 and thumb theirr nose at UK, and the top shelf kids in Kentucky are bombarded by negativity with respect to UK football (from rival fans and the basketball only type of UK fans alike), kids in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama tend to view a scholarship offer from UK as a chance to play in the best conference in the land (the only conference to may of them).

IMO, they should take 4. UK has rolled the dice in past years by allocating too few scholarships to OL on signing day, IMO. As we saw most of last season, you have to have quality depth along the OL. They really need to improve their numbers up front.

Outside of Meyers we don't seem to have many more offers for guards out there. Tyler Reagan may be the only one we have a legit shot at left on our board.

I think they should take four every year, period. Between graduation, attrition, and some playing as freshman, I think that keeps depth at a good level.

We should take 4-5 big uglies on BOTH sides of the line every year. The skill players are good for buts in the seats, but it's the guys in the trenches that control the lines and win the games.

The big uglies are more likely to sustain career ending injuries. Also its pretty obvious that a few different guys just can't play and you don't know that til you get em on Campus. I agree 4-5 every year on both sides of the ball.

Tend to agree, in principle. But I can definitely see why they'd be a little cautious this particular year.

  • Just looking at the roster, this class needs 2 more SEC Caliber OT prospects. The depth at that spot is just ridiculous for an SEC program.

    MinterWonderlnd

  • I agree Minter, I would like to see us add two more SEC caliber OT's but when it's all said and done I think we'll just take one and finish with 3 O-lineman total. Taking a kicker has threw my numbers off. I do love adding the kicker by the way he reminds me of the fantastic Middlesboro KY kicker from back in the late 90's. After watching Boynton on film I think he's very under rated, no doubt his offer sheet will grow a ton by SD... Even the experts will tell you O-lineman are the hardest to project and while his 2 star rating has some scratching their head it doesn't bother me at all because he's very athletic (not clumsy looking at all) long and has great feet. I really think Summers and Joker can work with him. To bad we can't nab his tailback... Not trying to piss anyone off but I like Boynton better at RT than Swindle because he looks much more athletic and since we rely on the zone blocking scheme athleticism is what your looking for, being athletic will also help his ability to pass block.

It also doesn't bother me that he's only 265ish, a kid that's 6'7 265 and that long could be 280-290 in no time and never loose any athleticism. That's the primary reason Summers favors these types. I just hope he doesn't eat to much like some have said Eatmon has, i've been told by a few that Eatmon is now very close to 350#. If Eatmon can maintain enough quickness I have no problem with it because at 6'7 he needs strength at OG, I just don't see him ever playing his projected position again and that sucks... Joker and CO put so much stock in him by only bringing in 1 O-lineman in 10. I really hope we never only bring in 1 or 2 O-lineman again, like other posters have said atleast 8-10 SShips should go on O-D line every year...

As far as bringing in a Center, yes it would be nice but from what i've saw OT is a much larger need, a OG or OT prospect can play Center as long as they have the football I.Q. and anchors very well... Being able to anchor against those gigantic NG's/DT's is so important especially now that so many teams are using a odd front with a NG. Centers come in all shapes and sizes too, a good example would be BAMA... Vlachos is 6'0-6'1 290 and one of the best in the country, then another SEC team Vandy had a 6'5 Center (that's now kicked off the team) that looked like a OT... I'm not worried about Center that much, West should be the Center once Smith graduates. IMO the O-line in 13 could look like this:

Miller/Jones-LT, Eatmon/Toth-LG, West/Myers-C, Watson/Love-RG, Mitchell/Swindle/Jones-RT... The RT position is the only position that worries me. Once Jones develops some quality mass (his upper body needs a lot) he'll be fine, he's a kid that has a huge upside as long as he has the work ethic and can keep his body fat down. I hate to bring it up but it would have been sweet if we could have added Pierce Burton (now starting RT at Ole Miss) the juco OT in the 12 class... Maybe Joker and Co luck up and land a good Juco RT for the 13 class...

I just wish Hyde was getting alittle more love, he has dominated on the camp circuit against the nations best and is still just a middle of the road 3 star by most. That's crazy, he should have 4 stars by his name atleast. I really don't see 40-50 kids that much better than him at his position, I think he could be one of the best NG's in the country by his Soph year. Thomas Chapman and our LB's will be the direct beneficiary of Jacob Hyde's presence... No doubt Chapman should get a ton of one on ones with the big fella getting double teamed in the middle every play... Our future looks so bright on the D-line, I just hope Joker and Co can improve our O-lines projected depth and ability this much...GO CATS!!!

  • Todd, I think you write great stuff...but are you only worried about RT in 2013??? That is an extrememly young O-line. 5 of those guys havent even had a single practice, I doubt anybody other than the coaches have a clue what Shaq may look like, Zach West hasn't had a snap in a game yet, and Eatmon has largely been dissappointing. The O-line is the only reason keeping me from being very optomistic for 2013.

This is a moot point but the O-line would look a ton different if we had kept Kenarious Gates and the Martin kid. I guess this is why we follow recruting so much.

I'm really not that worried about the O-line other than RT. I'm confident that Joker and Summers can take these kids and build a good O-line a year from now, never know who Joker may add, a kid like Burton could be in the works... I just hope Joker never only brings in 1 O-lineman again, the 10 class has made it tough no doubt... Just a few months ago there were 4 or 5 members telling me 1 was all Joker should have brought in back in 2010...

    todd

  • I firmly believe they should add at least 2 more O-linemen in this class to have 4. The scholarship numbers don't worry that much as I expect we will ultimately end up signing 20+ on NSD. Should NEVER take less than 4 OL, unless we have a year where we really only sign 15 or less players.
