South Carolina at Vandy on Thursday night

  • What are you guys thinking on this one?

Vandy comes in at 6.5 dogs which is actually very respectable. I noticed yesterday that SC's back-up RB is out for 2-4 weeks with an injury. Should be a good game, it will definitely give us a chance to see if Franklin can coach as well as he recruits. Sure, it's only his second year but it will be entertaining to see how he plans on pulling this upset.

Lattimore is the key to SC's season and it will be interesting to see how he runs at this point. It's more important that if he goes down early, SC will have to depend on a true frosh for the first four weeks or so.

It really makes me appreciate our depth at RB

I'm calling for SC to demolish the 'dores by 17 or so. My opinion may change next year but this will be a great game to watch when determining how Franklin can actually coach against a top ten team.

I'll take the over on 6.5. USCe will win by at least 7. I will be curious to see if vandy goes 6-7 with a bowl loss, what people will think of them.

  • Hurricane remenants may play a huge part in this game. I still think the gamecocks minus the points.

  • I def don't see this being as close as 6.5. I think USC is going to be very good this year and that Vandy lost a lot of very good senior talent that won't be replaced by inexperienced (though talented) true freshmen.

Also, I want Vandy not to be good. I'm still unhappy with that loss last year.

Does Vandy have a grass field? I think they do.

My opinion has always been that wet grass tends be dominated by big bruising lines with big backs.
I don't know enough about either to team to do anything but guess, but I think that USCe will have a bigger and stronger OL and DL, not to mention Lattimore.

I don't think it will be close.

Good topic Rob. Interesting the second string RB is out. Will Franklin have his D try to take Lattimore out? He's been known to be dirty that way if I remember right? Could be wrong but don't think so.

  • I'll predict a uscjr blowout of vandy. Vandy played well at times last year but in reality they still aren't very good.

  • The 'Cocks are going to rip the 'Dores to shreds. SCar is very strong this year. My son has become a HUGE fan, so I follow them a little bit. Can not see Vandy hanging with them.

  • The betting lines should be swapped for this game and the UK/UL game. Scar should be about a 13.5 favorite and UK a 6.5 dog.

  • As I understand it, Vandy switched to an artificial field this year. Wikipedia reference below:

Just a visitor from Columbia guys, checking out the other conference sites during week 1 and all the upcoming games. I hope you guys are right in predicting a Carolina win on Thursday. Rob...I am also interested in Franklin's coaching ability. Last year I think he was such a fresh breath of air and energy over the previous coach, that his kids were ready to buy in right away. His team is a good bit younger this year, so now we can get down to his coaching skills I think. I do not think we will underestimate them at all, but Carolina starts notoriously slow in opening games.... so who knows ?

As far as running backs go, we actually have another guy that is actually the 2nd string RB behind Lattimore. His name is Kenny Miles, a 5th yr. senior, who has had a respectable career as a backup RB at Carolina. He was a starter as a freshman and led the team in rushing that year. The true freshman is a guy named Mike Davis and has very good potential to the point that he is 3rd string and I think they will let him play this year. Our injured RB is Brandon Wilds, who filled in last year as a true freshman after Lattimore went down, and did well with 486 yds in 5 games. They think he will be back by week 2 , but I doubt it and think they take a redshirt on him for the year. He was replaced in our last 2 games against Clemson and Nebraska by Miles.
I'll be traveling to Lexington for our game this year and as always looking forward to a great game. Damn shame they pushed our weekend back a week this year, so NO Keeneland...rats! Thought about doing some of the bourbon trail on Friday. Any other suggestions ? Here's to great year for the Cats!

  • I think the Gamecocks are deeper and it'll show come late in the game. It'll be a good one to take in for the ground game between Stacy and Lattimore.

  • Knot Hole, one of your compatriots stopped by a little ways back asking about things to do in Lexington so I will refer you to that thread. It focuses mainly on restaurants and night life. If you have any other questions beyond that feel free to ask:

Thanks for the link BlueBloodBob. I will check this out. Whoop that bird's ass this week and get your season started right!

  • If Lattimore can stay healthy, in my opinion he's one of the best backs I've ever saw play the game in collegiate level. Kid is a stud and I expect big things out of him in every game except against us lol. Vandy played with so much passion and fire last year I actually Beleive they played above their potential. USC jr in this one. Too many horses.

    Kytate13

  • Another factor to remember is Vandy does not draw well under the best of circumstances. Given that this game is opposite the Titan's final home preseason game vs the Saints, I wonder if Vandy will fill half their stadium.

    BurgerNShake525

  • Just some perspective from Nashville ...

Heard the game is almost a sellout, and that is a major feat because the Titans are playing a preseason game against the Saints a couple miles down the road at the same time.

Not positive on this, but I think the Dores covered in every game last year. That said, I think less than a TD is giving Vandy too much credit. Heard Connor Shaw might have a nagging deal here or there, too, but I don't think Vandy will sneak up on anyone this year. My guess is teams are going to be very motivated against Coach Franklin.

    Kevin Ryan

  • I fully expect teams to not take Vandy lightly this year and to put them away when they can. Coaches don't like hearing about Franklin just as us fans don't. I think the game stays close but SCAR wins by 10pts.

There is only a 20-30% chance of rain. Not very high.

  • I think this is the year that the EAST takes back the SEC title. I love USC jr. this year as their personell is off the charts at several positions, including QB where i expect Connor Shaw to have a big time season. If Carolina builds a lead of 10 or more points with the defense and running game with Lattimore you can Katy Bar The Door, and thats against any opponent they face this season not just Vandy.

  • Don't buy the Vandy hype. I think they'll get to 6 wins this year because they have an easy schedule but don't expect them to threaten the better teams this year.

  • I keep hearing people talk about Vandy being a 6 win kinda team this year, when they could very well end up being 3-9.

I don't disagree, the SEC is much improved, from top to bottom this year. and talk about killing the big MO for vandy, a 3-9 season, haha.
