Spring practice will be interesting: quarterback position

  • Three sophomores with different skill sets:
Smith, pocket passer, not very mobile, very accurate short to medium routes, most experience of the three
Towles, pocket and moving passer, mobile, strong arm, confident, possibly three or four games under his belt.
Whitlow, mobile, strong arm but not accurate, several games of experience

I know that with a possible new coaching staff that this group will be under the microscope. Who wins out?

My guess if its aerial offensive coach Smith and Towles get the most looks with Towles winning out.
Whitlow??? I think if he stays he may change positions.

    good problem to have.

  • I think Smith and Towles will "platoon" next year. Each one brings such unique skills (Smith with ability to make quick reads and find an open man in a "hurry up" offense - Towles with great arm and accuracy plus more pocket mobility) that they will cause problems for Defensive Coordinators. Depending on the match-up with a particular team's schemes one may play more than the other during a particular game. But I feel they will split the time fairly evenly over the entire season. Smith will be particularly useful early and late in games attacking before the defense gets any rhythm going and after they are tired and won't have time to sub in and out. He will also produce longer drives and keep our defense off the field longer. Towles will likely lead us to quicker scores as he can pass so well. Our strong running game will do well with both guys (we could actually play 2 backs mostly with each qb to give them all rest just as pitchers in baseball use particular catchers). GREAT "problems" to have and they will work to our advantage!

  • Regardless of what coaching staff is here, we cannot continue this QB controversy up to 1 or 2 weeks before game one. That's been the case the past couple of years and it benefits no one. Coming out of spring ball a decision needs to be made and lets move on and prepare. It's good for the QB and the team. Let the QB be the team leader all summer and come into the season focused on the game and not still focusing on proving himself and trying to "win" the starting spot. That all needs to be behind us by then.

IMO... Only problem with repping both of them is with a QB so much of it is getting into a rythme. Hard to do running with two QB's. I believe that is why not many do it. I'd like to see them go with a starter and stick with it and let them get in a rythme and build confidence from play to play and game to game. I could see a few packages set up for the #2 man, but largest share of snaps need to be QB #1.

  • I can recall when Mumme came in that he installed Couch from day one and helped Billy Jack move to another school. I kind of expect that after a spring battle thats what will happen, with Towles winning out. Smith will have to make a choice then. Whitlow will be a talent to use all over the field i.e. Cobb. Or Whitlow may choose to go elsewhere.

  • And I'd say if they blow Towles's redshirt to try to make the difference between 2-10 and 3-9, the entire fan base should file a class action lawsuit against the coaching staff.

Once again, if Towels is healthy enough to practice and play he can't get a medical hardship year. It's not as simple as holding him out. Doctors have to sign off to NCAA that the player is physically incapable of performing football duties. Towles isn't in that boat.

Hey Matt, did you see Towles today at practice? Thanks.

No, we're not at practice on Mondays. They do the press luncheon afterward at the stadium.

  • I think one of the QB's will transfer before the start of the next season. You are not going to keep 3 guys in the same class who feel they can play QB. You may lose two by the end of the year.

Smith will be a junior next year, unless the NCAA grants him a medical RS. Which will be difficult.

  • Ok, so Smith won't get a medical redshirt? Matt, can you straighten this out?

I don't that is going to get straightened out for awhile. I *think* he currently *could* qualify if he is unable to get healthy enough to resume football activities but there are a lot of unknowns. More info will be known after the season.

  • Unless something has changed, medical redshirts are not awarded until the athlete has otherwise completed his/her eligibility.

  • Smith is currently eligible for a standard red shirt I believe because he did not participate in enough games to prevent it.

I thought playing in one play in any game burned the traditional redshirt.

  • You are correct. I am wrong. What I should have said was that he would be eligible for a medical red shirt because he played in less than 30% of the season.

You don't think the school has a degree of latitude in this? I mean, I'm not saying schools make up injuries, but I'm saying that schools won't have any problem finding a doctor who says, "Yeah, he had a high ankle sprain, and while he could've played at 75% in the last two games, I don't think he was physically capable of performing football duties."

Probably to some degree, but he's practicing today which means he's got four games and a month left. That's a quarter of the season. Plus, the kid wants to play. He doesn't want to sit idly by the rest of the year when he could be playing and practicing. If there was only a week or two left, maybe you go that route but not with this much time left in season, IMHO.

  • This offseason is going to be very interesting. It's pretty clear (watch me be completely wrong) that MB is keeping CJP through the end of the season and will "evaluate" then before making a decision. If CJP is retained I expect Towles to transfer. If CJP is not retained, I expect the new staff will give Towles every benefit of the doubt to beat Smith out, and ultimately Towles will be the starter. I don't know what Smith does if that happens. I don't see Whitlow playing for the starting position under either scenario, and he either decides he's happy as the backup or he moves to another position.

None of the three QBs have redshirted so an option would be to redshirt one if he was going to be the third man. A player can be redshirted any year it is not a Freshman only thing.

I definately would hope that Two of the three QBs didnt transfer leaving UK with only one QB. I believe that this years has shown that three is not too many QB to have on your roster.

I always thought that Mumme was an idiot and if he encouraged his back up QB to transfer that adds to my belief.
