Staggering list of NBA execs at Rupp tomorrow

  • I've never seen anything like this in terms of NBA teams showing up for a college game.

For Tuesday's game between UK and Florida, 24 of the 30 NBA teams are scheduled to have a representative in attendance at Rupp Arena. Eleven NBA general managers are scheduled to attend.

    Full list of those credentialed:

Atlanta: Mike McNeive, director of basketball operations; Dave Pendergraft, assistant GM/director of player personnel
Charlotte: Scott Howard, director of scouting; Dickey Simpkins, scout
    Chicago: Gar Forman, GM
Cleveland: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, special assistant to the general manager
Denver: Masai Ujiri, GM; Mike Bratz, director of scouting
Detroit: Doug Ash, director of scouting
Golden State: Larry Riley, GM; Larry Harris, basketball consultant/scout
    Houston: Daryl Morey, GM
LA Clippers: Neil Olshey, VP of basketball operations (serves as team's GM)
LA Lakers: Chaz Osborne (Title not listed; Lakers do not keep a public directory and a Google search of " 'Chaz Osborne' Lakers" and " 'Chaz Osborne' basketball" strangely yielded no results.)
    Miami: Randy Embry, scout
    Milwaukee: Jeff Weltman, assistant GM
New Jersey: Maury Hanks, director of scouting; Gregg Polinsky, director of player personnel
New Orleans: Dell Demps, GM; Gerald Madkins, VP of player personnel
New York: Allan Houston, assistant GM
    Oklahoma City: Sam Presti, GM
    Orlando: Greg Stratton, scout
Phoenix: Lance Blanks, GM; Andrew Kennedy, scout
Portland: Chad Buchanan, director of college scouting
Sacramento: Geoff Petrie, president of basketball operations
San Antonio: Danny Ferry, VP of basketball operations
Toronto: Bryan Colangelo, GM/president (andalternate NBA governor); Ed Stefanski, executive VP of basketball operations
    Utah: Kevin O’Connor, GM
Washington: Ed Tapscott, director of player programs/scout

The six teams that won't be present are Boston, Dallas, Indiana, Memphis, Minnesota and Philadelphia.

    So there you go.

        The Calipari Effect.

        It's a few things:

-That, but more importantly to the NBA personnel, both teams have NBA talent that will be facing other NBA talent.

-A friend pointed out that a lot of those teams could have been in Louisville tonight to check out that game, which despite both teams' recent fortunes did feature some surefire and a lot of potential NBA talent. That's a good opportunity to catch four teams with a lot of talent in one trip.

        • So, they could basically just schedule a league convention in Lexington tonight. :)

          • Just ridiculous...

The fans in KY (even the part I've been trying to pawn off as Indiana...) should be proud of that. Its about damn time a rivaly outside of the tired overplayed in North Carolina get a little love and respect.

I'm not sayin Puke/PughNC isn't a great rivaly but its not at all the only one. UK/UofHell is maybe the most underrated rivalry in college hoops. Plenty of hatred (pure unadulterated hatred) and quite a few NC's combined.

I could go back and look at seating charts, but I remember seeing several of these absent teams this season already. And I bet they've all seen Florida, too.

                    • My friend Alex Risen of WTVQ just pointed out something pretty cool to me. Heat scout Randy Embry is a name that may sound familiar to some of you.

Embry was the 1961 Mr. Basketball here in Kentucky out of Owensboro High School, and he played three seasons of basketball here at UK under Adolph Rupp. He scored 393 points in his three-year career and made more of an impact at UK as a baseball player, where he was an All-SEC player.

Embry was the longtime baseball coach at Owensboro HS. Upon retiring, he called his former teammate Pat Riley, and Riley offered him a job in scouting.

I could see Darius going late 1st to Miami which IMHO would a PERFECT fit for the Heat.
