Starting QB faces tough task ahead

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips is poised to announce his starting quarterback. But one has to wonder if the person selected will be the real winner in the long run?

  • How about a different scenerio? Lets say the offense scores somewhere in the 20s against UL and improves during the next 2 games. Then struggles some against UF and USC before playing well the rest of the way. We win 6 or 7 games and fans support our starting QB. I really do not want to see another true freshman QB thrown in against SEC competition, even if he is talented.

  • I really don't understand this story or whatever this is Darrell, you have us in an all or nothing scenario. Louisville is more experienced?, more experienced than who? I am pretty sure we have more starts per starter than they do, UofL is a team that got beat by FIU, and Marshall last .. Yes I know they beat us, but we had 35 yards rushing, this because we tried time after time to run Newton...We had zero play makers and we still should have beat UofL.

That Team down I64 is NOT better than us, there schedule was in there favor last year to win 10 games, and they couldn't do that. Everyone is basing this off the win against West Virginia, and thier comeback self proclained moral comeback against NC State, in which they were down 21 points and needed gadget plays to even get back into it. But they lost that game so don't feed me the almost crap.

I am going to leave it at this, we lost Danny and Winston on defense, and some experience on the O-line. But this team is young yes but they have more experience than UofL. And if you think after playing a game at South Carolina, and then at LSU we are going to be scared of the 40k that will fill Papa Johns Place your crazy. I'm behind Joker, this staff and this team...

Like Darrell's work but not a fan of this write up Darrell.

  • Its not so much how many wins we end up with for me, its how we play. If we get throttled by UL, Vandy, UT, and we have a close game with WKU and end up with 3 wins then I will be all for some changes next year.

But, if we are competitive in those games and there is obvious talent at the youth positions and we show improvement, I can live with that and only getting 3 wins.

  • LODer :-) started to go with Fellowship of the Miserable, to quote Bill Curry. I hope the starter, presumably Max, does great. I just him taking the beating for a team that will need time to gel. Can he hang on long enough before the "we just felt we had to make a change to see if we can get something going" mindset kicks in.

Did think the article was depressing....
I want this team to be successful. I want CJP to be successful.
But, I just can't live with 3 wins, just can't accept that.

How far ahead of Morgan Newton and UK's two freshmen QBs is Max Smith? Hearing it's "not even close." Should be official by 6 p.m

  • At this point it's no secret Smith is going to be the starter. Pretty much all of us who cover the team have been told that. It's just a matter of when Joker opts to make it official. We assume that will be today, but we have not been told he'll make that announcement today.

  • LOL Darrel, Is the cup half empty or full? I'm going to send you some blue tinted glasses before this gets worse.
I sort of take a different view. The Qb can take this team nowhere but up because it was very sorry last season. So far the injury bug has not bit like last year. So far news out of practice seems positive. Recruiting has improved and out youngsters are a year more experienced. I also think UL is a decent team but you make them sound like USC. Sure they will do well in the Big Easy but had it not been for turnovers in the end they barely beat us last year.

  • I've been on here saying that I thought Towles was either 1 or 2. Now I just heard that Smith is by far the number one and the number 2 is.................Whitlow? Take it for what it's worth.

Same thing I've been hearing in past few days, because of his athleticism and ability to run the 'Wildcat', etc. More prepared to help right now than Towles because of those things.

  • The starting QB at UK is a tough task year in and year out, but I submit that Newton had the toughest task last year of any I can recall in recent history. It was certainly no picnic for Hartline either.

Thanks Matt. Hoped I wasn't being gullible. Whitlow was apparently very underrated?

Yeah Newton did have a tough task. Beat up offensive line, no playmakers, guys dropping balls etc. At the same time he was part of the problem.

tWhit - you hit it in on the head. Newton had his issues, but the whole offense owned the problems/issues last year. It snowballed and got worse each game. Newton was only a part of the blame and deserves no more blame than the O-line, receivers, RB's, tight ends and so on. Each game there seemed to be new or continued problem. Let's hope this year we stay injury free and this offense gels better. I look for a much improved offense.

I guess the flip side of that is they started last year's game against us with the Midget under center and we couldn't even handle him even with their AA center out and a group of inexperienced linemen, then he gets knocked out and in comes Bridgewater a true freshmen who never played in a college game before and they still beat us.

I will say that in this series the underdog overperforms 70% of the time so I do think Kentucky will cover the number but an outright upset doesn't appear to be likely IMO.

  • IMO UKs Offense is going to be better than last year and the defense also. UK is going to beat UofL. UofL is a paper Tiger. Way overrated.

    Darrell is a realist.

I'm pretty sure you mean this tongue in cheeck but there are way too many negative Nancy's on this board who hide behind the term "realist". Here's a nice exerpt from a blog article I read recently that seems apprpriate for tor the board:

“I’m not a pessimist, I’m a realist.” How many times have you heard that one? Far too many time I’ll guess. Often spouted by the most negative and cynical of people, this sentence is seen as a blanket licence to be as pessimistic as humanly possible and for you to expect people to nod along with you because, as you so eloquently put it, you’re a “realist”. Baloney.

I mean, I could natter on for hours about glasses, water levels, is it full, is it empty, and who’s been nabbing my drink but it really makes little difference. Some people are pessimists and some are optimists. It’s just that nobody is a realist.

Let’s face it people, we seem to have lost the actual meanings of the words optimist and pessimist. Realist really isn’t an option unless you’re God or Chuck Norris. Both an optimist and a pessimist will look at the facts and interpret them in a positive or a negative light respectively. For some reason, we’ve come to think that if you’re an optimist you just think that everything’s going to turn out fine with sunshine, roses and fairytale love; and if you’re a pessimist you think that we’re all going to die. Slowly.

Reluctant to appear as if we ignore the cold hard facts, we claim to be realists: people who sagely weigh up the pros and cons and come to a real decision based upon empirical truth.

The problem is, we’re dealing with hypotheticals here. Situations where it could conceivably go either way. Nobody actually knows what’s going to happen you know. A realist cannot exist because you cannot know what the outcome is going to be in every situation.

Pessimist is not a dirty word – they’re just people who analyse facts as much as the next person but who generally come to more negative conclusions than optimists. Optimist also isn’t a synonym for idiot. They don’t all wear rose tinted 3D glasses and ignore past experiences. Pessimists can come to positive conclusions and optimists can come to negative conclusions as well – it’s more of a scale than a binary on/off happy/suicidal thing.

If you sincerely hold to the idea that you’re a realist, I put it to you that you’re a delusional pessimist who is ashamed to admit that you have a rather gloomy and cynical outlook on the world.
