Stats on scoring averages in the tournament?

  • It seems like there are a lot more sub-60 point games than usual this year.

  • Yeah. it just seems so boring.

  • College basketball is dying right before our eyes...god I hope they change some rules, start to hold people accountable and work with the NBA to get some more talent in the game.

  • It's because the officials allow teams to be so physical and coaches, especially in the BE, teach them to foul so much knowing the refs will let them get away with it. The NCAA needs to clen that up.

  • 2011 Tournament Scoring Averages:
    All 67 games: Average score, favorite v underdog: 70 – 63 ½ Total points per game: 133 ½
    First Round Only, 36 games: 71 – 62; 133
    Second Round Only, 16 games: 72 ½ - 67 ½; 140
    Sweet 16 Only, 8 games: 70 – 70 ½; 140 ½

2012 Tournament Scoring Averages, through 56 games:
    All 56 games: 68 ½ - 62 ½; 131
    First Round Only, 36 Games: 69 – 63; 132
    Second Round Only, 16 Games: 69-61 ½;; 130 ½
    Sweet 16, 4 Games: 64 ½ - 61; 125 ½

It sure looks like scoring is down this year as compared to last year’s tournament, and the decline is increasing, the deeper we move into the tournament.

Exactly. The refs need to do their job or coaches with mediocre shooting teams will keep playing defense like this in order to stay in games.

Bingo, some coaches and even certain conferences (BE and B10) are taking the skill out of the game with overly physical / hacking defense. The refs need to clean this up. The NCAA is in the process of killing their golden goose by allowing this type of play to continue. The average fan doesn't want to see grind it out style games.
