Video: Duke students taunt NC State player over deceased grandmother | Yardbarker.com

No one likes losing their grandmother and by all accounts Lewis was very close to his.  She just passed away last Friday and understandably he is taking it hard. The National Media treats Duke with

  • Sounds like a group of frat boys got together and decided this would get in the kid's head. They probably thought it was helping their team and therefore anything goes. But there is a line and this easily crosses it. Students often get out of hand. My favorite part of that video, however, is that the kid quitely knocks both free throws down and immediately silences them. Idiots. If only NC could have won...

Just like we dont want certain fans to represent BBN because they ruin it for others, this looks like the same case...just sad that they would be that low.

I agree the University and Coach K need to personally and publicly apologize to the kid, NC State, and the school's alumni.

If I was the University President I would shut down the student center, or something, for a week.

  • I say fine everyone who was in the student section. Next time the idiots want to act like this then maybe the innocent ones will make an effort to shut them up. That is probably the most sorry sportsmanship, and just plain lack of respect, I have seen in a college game like that.

Your right it is surprising that those students could be so cruel. Some try to pass it off as them just being dumb college students but even at 18-22 year olds know better than to do something this inappropriate. I like the suggestion that another poster suggested to close down the student center or some other non-educational facility for a time. The whole Duke fanbase needs to apologize to the young man and his family.

I think your point about it going beyond sorry sportsmanship is on the money. I mean it is beyond bad sportsmanship. It's a breakdown in human decency motivated by a desire to appear funny, outrageous, witty, or something else I can only picture an entitled, spoiled, and immature Duke student in the year 2013 wanting.

Duke's student body actually researches things like this and then hands them out to the student section. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here.

I don't know about that. I vividly remember Kerr from his Bulls and Spurs days, but his college days are a little before my time.

Kerrs dad was the President of the American University in Beirut and was murdered by PLO terrorists. ASU students used to chant PLO at him all the time

  • If the student body of those schools stoop so low as to do what they did on those 2 occasions then they are haters not fans of the university. I cant ever imagine the UK student body doing something so insensitive as they did. I at one time had a lot of respect for Duke and their athletic programs but that has changed even though the players and coaches had nothing to do with what went on, or at least I hope they didnt.

I'm not sure I'd classify them as haters. That's probably being nice. Almost every UK fan could be classified as being UL haters and vice versa. Both of these incidents are just wrong. It's basically right up there with wishing someone would die. Taunting someone for the death of a family member means somebody deserves a beat down.

  • There have been reports from people at the game that they knew the chant was because of his recently deceased grandmother and that it was widely known in the crowd.

It wasn't an accident...they knew exactly what they were doing.

    jamccain

  • Absolutely Pathetic. An apology absolutely MUST be in order. If not I better hear this on ESPN. I F'ing better hear this story on ESPN or else I'm gonna call the station. I better hear Bilas and Dukie V talking about this during gameday or while calling other games until an apology is made and the apology better be public as hell.

  • So they are either saying "how's your grandma" or "past your bedtime". I can't imagine any fan base chanting about a dead person, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt until someone proves that they chanted that. The kid looks young and you can hear either one if that is what you are listening for.

If they did chant about is grandma then they should apologize. All fan bases have those types of idiots. I remember when our student section would cant "Walsh is gay" when we played Florida. Sometimes the small group of idiots out there make us all look bad.

    truecatfan4life

  • I'm not trying to stick up for Duke, but I do remember some of our fans calling one of the Florida players (MAtt Walsh maybe?) Fa&&ot, or silly fa&&ot, everytime he touched the ball.

The fans at the game are on local media in NC admitting they were chanting it and why. They were chanting "how's your grandma?", and they were chanting it because they know she died recently.

No need to give them the benefit of the doubt because they have admitted it.

    jamccain

  • I have yet to see anyone admit they did it. I have seen some people that there could have been a small number that could of said it, but nothing I have read reports anyone saying they did it.

But once again, every fan base has a small section of idiots. I am not going to be mad at their whole fan base for something a few people possibly did.

Not excusing t at all, but that was in response to the same type of taunts that Keith Bogans had received from the UF students previously in Gainesville.
