Steve Mariucci

  • Why has he not been mentioned as a possible candidate for UK's next HC? At least, I don't recall his name being mentioned.

It was reported earlier in the year that he was interested in the Arkansas job, but was never contacted. If that's the case, then it's proof he's ready and willing to coach on the college level... most namely, the SEC. If UK has a shot, he may even be my #1 target... if I were Mitch.

  • Mariucci will never, ever even consider the Kentucky job. He's a west coast guy, and if he goes to the college game he'll stay out there somewhere. Kentucky will not be on his 'wish list' of jobs.

It doesn't matter who the UK admin hires after Joker is gone, it'll just be more of the same. The UK admin, the UK president, the UKAA......... not one of them, individually or collectively, give two squats about Kentucky ever having a consistently decent football program. It's sad to say, I hate saying it, but it's just the way it is.

Let's just face facts.........Kentucky is almost never, ever going to be even remotely competitive in football in the SEC. Yeah, there will be that rare occasion where in spite of themselves, the admin, the UKAA & the UK president that we'll have a good team, and it will only be for a season or two at most, and then it'll be back to what we've had the last 3 years That's how it has always been, and that's how it's mostly going to be.

Mariucci is not a "west coast guy@. He coached at San Fran. Other than that he's more of an upper Midwest guy.

The kind of coach we go after next, as well as, the kind of money we offer, will speak volumes for how serious our Admin is about UK football... and how serious they are about turning our program around. Only time will tell... and most likely, a very short time.

  • Yeah. Mariucci, gruden, jimmy Johnson, bill cowher, Bob costas, tony dungy, or terry Bradshaw. Not necessarily in that order, but that's the list!!

I know this was said in jest, but no way could I ever root for a team coached by Bob Costas. I think I'd rather hire Ricky P. to come coach.

We still won't get Mariucci to even answer the telephone if Mitch was to call him.
Honestly, I have no earthly idea who we could get to come clean up this train wreck at this point, and I'm pretty sure no top flight, big name coach would even give us a second thought after they looked at their caller ID when the phone rings.
We are in the same exact spot we were in in the last year of the Curry regime, only this time it only took 3 years to run the wheels off the cart.
By the end of this season we will OFFICIALLY be the joke of the SEC in football.

  • We were the joke of the SEC under the last 10 coaches we've had. What's new? We may have had a couple of years where we were respectable, but, don't think for a minute that every year for the past 30, when other SEC teams looked at there schedule, that they didn't pencil in a win against us. Also, for this same period of time, media people, announcers, so-called football experts, analyst, etc. have always given UK very little respect, if any. It gets old hearing the laughs under there breaths, being the punchline of jokes and hearing underhanded or slighted comments all the time.. But, if anyone thinks this is relegated to the last 2-3 years is just kidding themselves. I've been hearing it for years, plus, when was the last time we were picked better than 5th or 6th (now 7th) in any preseason poll.. But, yeah, it's just Joker and the staff that's brought this on.. People need to get a clue to reality..

  • I like Butch Jones (Cincinnati) or Willie Taggart (WKU), but don't know if they will be enough for the fans. Petrino won't come to UK, Mitch wouldn't hire him and all the former NFL HCs would not come to Kentucky either.

This next hire is similar to the last basketball hire. Mitch went out and got his guy (Gillispie) and it didn't work out so he had to go with a riskier but ultimately much better fit in Calipari. Mitch went with Brooks because he could get him, transitioned to Joker and it is not working out. We will need to reach a little and the only folks who will satisfy the natives is a proven winner like Petrino or Leach. They are risky, but could get us respectable in a hurry ... especially considering all the young talent that Joker has assembled in Lexington.

That is why I LOVE Butch Jones. He knows the area, is a proven winner and isn't a huge risk from a management standpoint. He also brings the ability to recruit the Cincy area and studs like Quinn.

Exactly the same reason that every coach that has built a name for themselves would not come here to risk it at this football program. I have no idea why people think we have a shot at guys like Gruden or even Bobby Petrino for that matter. Why come here when there is already a program somewhere else that in not a laughing stock in need of a coach. We will get rid of Joker, get another Joker type and in three years be ready to tear it down and start over again...

  • Money talks a lot louder than just about anything now days. Barnhart has openly admitted that we could make a football coach the highest paid coach in America so obviously money is not an option. The thing that UK has to do is convince somebody to come, and we have the best salesmen in America in Cal. Cal will help out all he can with the football team, I mean he took time out of his day when the football team had a recruit on campus just to talk to that recruit. The name I would go after first would be Kirby Smart bar none. He is by far the top coordinator in the nation. Everybody talks about how we don't have a shot with any of the coaches everybody has said, but I believe we do. We have some amazing young talent that just need some molding. I believe one of these coaches will see that and be like "hey, those guys have some serious talent, I need to look into that." People forget that our starting lineup on both offense and defense are probably 75% soph. and freshmen. There are only 9 seniors that start on for the offense and defense. We have the 3rd youngest team in the nation. Everybody on here talking about we have no shot, I have just given up hope totally on the football team entirely and that's the reason nobody wants to coach here or play here. The fans are a big part of everything in sports.

  • Uh no, fans are everywhere and ours care about UK football so regardless of what they say at least they are engaged. The problem is in the structure of the deal at UK where the football program does not have control over the money they generate. For UK to hire a coach they have to put a lot of money on the table for the coach and staff and control over a significant amount of the money they generate. No one of substance is coming to UK and have Mitch Barnhart gut his program to the point where, well, where we are now.

I don't know which Gruden you are thinking of, but, Jay is a possiblity and John is not. Petrino is a possibility because he wants to coach in the elite conf. and has exp in the state w/recruiting and building a program.

UK already has put alot of money on the table for coaches. I don't know why that keeps coming up. Joker makes 1.7 million + staff salaries. not far from most programs in the SEC. Now I don't know any state University that lets the HC of the football team control the football revenue. I've never researched it but, I would find it hard to believe. Money isn't an issue as has been stated on several occasions.

Personally, I don't think you can have both flagship sports be elite for an extended period of time. take a look around the country at the elite football programs and their basketball programs.
(Bama, Oregon, LSU, etc... all excel at fb, bb not so much.) There is a few the a pretty good at both but more are one or the other. I don't know why you can't be elite in both but, it appears that way.

  • We are likely to be at best the 3rd, if not 4th SEC school looking to replace a couch. Arkansas is certain. Then there's Auburn and Tennessee that could both be looking at change. I just don't see an established coach coming here for money alone. And we'd be down the list for coaches dying for an SEC job. Plus there would need to be written assurance from the administration of a new found commitment to the program.
So that leaves an established coach with baggage. UK won't do that. Or an up and coming young guy with something to prove. But that would be a huge risk if he fails. His career would go in the dumper and likely never recover. That would leave a journeyman guy or some FCS guy. Either way it's a risk.
This will not change until the university makes effort to fix the problems. I love this school. I've bled out for years watching this thing start to show signs of progress only to see it bottom out again. We love the school, the athletes....but it's like being the parent of an ugly baby. Nobody else sees it the way we do. We need a UK grad AD and president. School pride needs to be a bigger factor in administrative decisions.
