Stoops' coordinators....

  • I think it's really going to be interesting to see what direction Stoops decides to go with regards to OC and DC.

OC- will it be Coley? Nobody seems to really know how much influence he had on the FSU offense. We know he didn't call the plays. Did Jimbo also design the offense, or was it Coley's? FSU seemed to run a more pro-style type of offense with EJ Manual. It definitely wasn't the "spread" after reading a lot of different articles on their offensive philosophy. Does Stoops want the spread?

    DC-????

Here's the million dollar question- Should a rookie HC hire an OC and a DC that have never been coordinators before? Or, should a rookie HC attempt to surround himself with some experienced coordinators? I think it would be awefully tough to have a rookie HC, OC, and DC all trying to cut their teeth in the SEC.

I'm not convinced that Stoops won't call the defense..

I'm sure that coley is ready to call plays. He was likely going to leave for a major program to the OC no matter what. So it's good to get him here.

In terms of the FSU offense. It isn't a "Pro set". The pro set is typically viewed as a two back set. FSU is almost always in the shotgun with at least 3 wr, one te, and one rb. It's actually quite similar to what we were doing with maxwell smith early last year. It's not the spread, but it isn't the "pro set" either. I'm a proponent of this offense and think it will work well with the personel we have now.

Most also thought that the DE coach (name escapes me) was ready to be a dc at a major program. If Fisher hadn't pissed stoops and coley off earlier this year he'd probably stay to be the dc.

All in all it's about being good at what you do more than having "experience". Stoops has likely been planning for this for a long time.

From what I understand Coley has been in charge of game film, game planning and "consults" on play calling with fisher. He just doesn't make the final call. No big deal.

With stoops influence on the defense I think we'll be fine there too. Whether they're experienced coordinators or not, I want them to be sound most of all. No high school gimmick offenses or defenses (minter's silly thing he ran).

  • There is a poster over on CI who nailed the Stoops hire before anybody else, and certainly appeared to have good info throughout the search process. When the news broke re Coley being offered the OC position, he replied that the report was "not entirely accurate". He apparently thinks Coley was being offered some other job title with UK, as he stated that Neal Brown is the primary target for OC, with someone at Murray State being the second option (presumably head coach Chris Hatcher, who was on Mumme's staff at UK in the late 90's). TIFWIW.

  • If I'm a rookie HC, I want an absolute stud staff. Since I am from the defensive side of the ball, I want a proven really good OC. If I decide to hire a DC, I am ok with getting less experience if it means better recruiting or another attribute like that......but I still would prefer an experienced DC.

For my position coaches at UK, I want BIG TIME recruiters first and player developers second.

  • I would like to throw Charlie Harbisons' name into the picture for defensive coordinator. He has coached in the SEC before at Miis. St. and Alabama. He is currently at Clemson and has some success at all 3 places he has been. Now I am not saying he is the best DC out there but he has coached in the SEC with success and may be available for Stoops staff.

  • I was really hoping Stoops would bring Eliot with him. Guy is an ace recruiter and very good De coach..Im hoping at least Coley comes. He is also an elite recruiter with ties into South Fla.. as far as the FSU offense..its Jimbo Fishers baby..JImbo calls the plays...but I think Coley..being the video guy and OC..has picked up enough to be a good playcaller and offensive architect.
AS far as DC..I was hoping Eliot..but really..Stoops will be our DC ...im sure he will be all over the defense. And thats a good thing.

  • The only thing I have seen to support Eliot is not coming is that an FSU recruit tweeted he stated something to the recruit to the effect he (Eliot) was still rocking with them. I wouldn't expect him to say otherwise until officially he is leaving. So, I say it is still up in the air. But, that's just me. Is there something else that I missed?

  • "IF" somehow Mitch Barnhart enables the football program to put together a staff that includes Stoops, Coley, Eliot, AND another "name" assistant.........I won't speak another ill word towards him. Unless he drops the ball on major facility upgrades. LoL

I'm with you here ... don't give up the ship yet on Eliot. He has ties with Stoops. The ACC championship game is very big on the horizon for FSU with the possibility of a BCS bowl after that. IMO, Eliot won't rock the boat right now with any kind of commitment to UK.

Not saying that he's coming ... just that he's not likely to make it public right now.

Isn't vennables at Clemson as the dc right now?

  • I think it all depends on how much money the Prez at UK gives him (STOOPS) and the AD to work with.

The more money they have the better coaches they might get.

Care to tell me why the athletic department's revenue is related at all to the State government's fiscal problems?

  • I wouldn't mind bringing Zook on as DC, bring Eliot on as DE/DL coach and recruiting coordinator, Coley on as RB or QB coach and co-recruiting coordinator, keep Washington on as WR coach, Smith on as LB coach, Summers on as OL coach and Neal brown as OC.. That would shape up as a really good start to the staff..

I would like to see Woodson kept as QB coach and Summers for O line.

The bonding at uk has no effect on the cash standing of the state. Uk athletics is on very sound financial standing. Not sure where you are coming from with this.

What about Zook as the special teams coach, he can recruit no doubt, and give DJ the DC job to make sure he comes with Stoops. Cause i bet Stoops will be very hands on with the D to help DJ get up to speed so to speck. Just a thought.

  • FSU fan on CI is posting that Coley and Elliott may be staying. No idea how serious that is or how good his info is. I think we really need one of those guys (preferably Coley) to get into SEC level recruiting
