Stoops evaluating Kentucky roster

  • john4uk said...

There was a reason why UK went 2 and 10 this past season,as Coach Stoops is finding out.Simply put.there are'nt many SEC caliber football players on UK's roster. So let's hope and pray he can release some of these guys, bring in some solid Juco's,have better recruits and get this moribund program turned around.

I dont think that is true at all, and I dont think releasing kids from the current roster and signing JUCO guys in their place is the answer and I dont think Stoops will do that. It would be one of the worst moves he could possibly make.

I'm sure Stoops was aware of what kind of talent was on the roster when he took the job. I doubt the individual tapes produced much shock for him. He knew what we had, and he wanted the job and thinks he can win here.

Alot of people dont appreciate how little the difference talent-wise is between 2/3 star recruits, and most 4 star recruits. Don't live and die by the rankings from these recruiting services. Please.

There are a lot of reasons UK was 2-10 last year. The biggest reason was the staff. They repeatedly put players in position to fail. You want one example? Wyndham being asked to cover a RB one on one in coverage with NOBODY deep. And they did it multiple times a game.

  • 1. UK was 2-10 in large part due to about the worst QB play you can imagine when Smith went down. I'll argue Smith, Towles with better coaching/scheme should greatly improve the offensive production.
    2. UK lost not much talent on defense...Ukwu, Wyndham, Rice, Benton were simply very poor ability/athletic wise. Neloms was the only legit Sr we lost and he had a terrible year out of position at CB and then injured.

    - Playing Dupree at SLB was stupid move...he'll be at DE I'll wager. Zadarius Smith has to be eons better than Ukwu/Wyndham
    - Playing bad safeties will change under Stoops I propose. Our DBs will play faster in his scheme...he's done it at Zona and FSU. Faulkner hopefully shows up. Rub is Caffey won't make it back.
    - DT spots if they get in shape and play...Rumph, Cobble, Coleman, Tristan Johhson and maybe one of the Fr emerge at DT.
    - Avery Williamson, Khalid Henderson can move at LBer

There is enough to pick up WKU, maybe UL at home, and 2 SEC games (Mizzou, UT looks awful, Vandy breaks in new QB, Arkansas, etc.)

  • Yeah, I think 5 wins is a reasonable expectation with 6 being very possible, depending on how healthy we stay.. 7 wins would be awesome, but, at the very peak of expectations.. 8 wins is a pipe dream, imo..

I do think the 4-3 D works better for this team as I see the DL possibly being one of the teams strengths with the addition of Smith, Bell, Hyde to go along with Rumph, Cobble, Johnson and Coleman and I think we'll add another piece, with possibilities of Lauren Jackson, Toby Johnson, Ben Bradley. Any of those 3 would boost the DL trmendously. I could see Dupree at DE, as well, but adding another DE and keeping him at LB would be the best situation possible.

I think we'll be okay at LB, but, just an injury or 2 away from being very thin there. Williamson, Henderson, Rancifer should all be solid players, and possibly Dupree if not moved, but, our depth of Simpson, Brause, Forrest isn't the greatest. Not fast enough for the SEC game on an every down basis. Would love to add 1 more quality LB to the mix, say a George Williams, Stanley Higgins or De'Niro Laster.

I know our secondary was a weak point last year and we were extremely young, but, if you look at all the young guys that got quality experience, baptism by fire, so to speak, you'd have to think there would be improvement there. A healthy Faulkner and a qualified Caffey would be a big boost in and of itself. Glen was one of only a few 4 star quality players on the team and Marcus was supposedely our #1 CB coming into last year. In addition the staff has alot of offers out to some highly ranked kids at that position and I feel certain we'll add a couple more to the mix, so, I think this could be a stronger area than most think. Of course, adding the Alexander twins would be huge, but, I'd settle for Hytchye and Willis and for McClain to stay commited. Everyone of those guys are capable of contributing early and even replacing the current starters.
