**Story: UK to have open quarterback race**

  • I cant say who either way will be starting QB. Smith looked good early this year before getting hurt, but that was against weaker competion.Last year when inserted into games as a freshman against SEC teams he started 7-20 with no tds and 2 picks. I would of loved to see what he did against the SEC but he got hurt. It will be interesting to watch, but I see no way I can put any QB above another at this point.

Before you knock the competition Smith played against, recall that he beat a Kent State team that was knocking on BCS's door.

If character, a quick release and accuracy are what Neal Brown's offense needs, then both Max and Patrick have that in spades with the edge to Max as this point due to experience. Patrick may have a higher ceiling but Max was certainly more accurate.

But I still loved what Jalen Whitlow did. He may not be as accurate as Max or Patrick but he extended plays better than anybody. He made 3rd and longs with his feet the way SEC teams have been doing against UK for years. Honestly, I would love to see Jalen win the job but I have a feeling that the majority of the fan base would be up in arms.

Like Neal Brown says, having 3 QBs is a good problem to have.

In terms of who will start...

To me it's pretty obvious that Maxwell is VERY well suited for this offense. He's got the accuracy, decision making ability and the quick release.

The difference between this offense and what we did with joker is that there will be far fewer "down field" throws. We will see a lot of quick crossing routes, screens etc...

Texas Tech didn't have elite o-linemen but their qb's were rarely hit or sacked because of the design of the offense.

Further, Maxwell's issues are not freak muscle pulls. He had a impact shoulder injury and a ankle sprain that all of us would have suffered.

I'd say we see a qb depth chart next fall of

    1. Smith 2 Towles 3 Whitlow

You forgot to mention they don't play defense UN the B12 either . ;)

It's going to be fun to see how thus plays out, who RS, transfers, or changes position if any .

They were knocking on the BCS door but they played a weak schedule. The teams they played were a combinded 70-84. Their strength of schedule was ranked 110.

Im not Max didnt play well but to say he will clearly be best, I cant say. Of the three I dont think Whitlow is accurate enough but come spring my opionion could easily be proven wrong.

All three have a good shot at winning the job is all i am saying

  • I just worry about him being durable for a whole season, the SEC can be a meat grinder for rbs, qbs, and wrs.
