Surprised Elliot the LB coach?

  • Seals the deal for chuck smith it seems. Thoughts on that?

Still doubt turner stays, now I'm intrigued as to his dal/de coach is going to be.

  • Surprised? Yes. Likely due to who Stoops has in mind for the DL coach. Will be interesting and am excited to hear who it will be.

Never thought, other than maybe Summers, there would be many if any holdovers.

But yes. A little surprised by Eliot being named LBs coach.

Not really. Eliot played as an LB and coached there as well. Coupled with the fact that with most systems the LB's make the defensive calls, it seems to be a natural fit. IMO.

  • You would figure Eliot would coach De's..with his success at that spot. Chuck Smith did a outstanding job coaching Uk's LB's..sent a few no star to 3 star kids to the NFL..seems like a Cat backer has led the SEC in tackles every year the past 4 or 5. Its been what..3 in a row? Not to mention Chuck was a pretty decent recruiter. I guess a clean sweep of former staff is what Stoops wanted..a totally fresh start.

The linebackers while good players have been near the top in tackles because they are on the field more than any other defense. and do not even talk about Chuck as a recruiter he missed on Dawson which was in his back yard, Stoops has upgraded.

He will be the D Cord. Smith could still be back at LB coach.

  • I think that we need a great recruiter for Louisville. How about the coach at Central High School? They won the state again this season. We'd likely need to promote a Trinity guy though. That is where the studs are funneled to in Louisville.

  • Our defense has been horrible over the past several years. Ofcourse we have had players lead in tackles, its because the linebacker position is supposed to be best at that. And when you have other players that arent doing their jobs that leads to more tackles going to the linebackers. I dont see it as anything Smith did. Yes Trevathan was a really good LB, he wasnt great. Williamson has to be the worst LB ever chosen to be on an All SEC team.

  • Wow. Chuck Smith is an outstanding coach. He did a very good job in recruiting as well as developing linebackers. If you don't think Kelly, Woodyard, Trevathan, and Williamson are outstanding linebackers then you have an argument with the SEC coaches and the NFL. None of them were stand out recruits and they all made all SEC and played or will play in the league. No coach over the past few years except for Petrie when he was here has developed players like Smith. The defense has been bad lately because the head coaching and coordinators were just awful.

  • guys, Stoops deserves to bring whoever he wants in. Chuck smith was a fine coach but he was pretty poor on the recruiting trail. There are guys out there who can do both. Set your heights higher, it's not a situation where you have to pick recruiting over coaching or vice/versa.

It's very common for the d-coordinator to coach linebackers as they make most of the calls for the front 7.

  • Hop we seem to have a lot of fans that cannot seem to let go of having Ky natives on the staff..Most of the time it does not work out...I hope Stoops fills this staff soon with all outside guys so we dont have to read this crap anymore..

This is what UK said. "Kentucky released the announcement that DJ Eliot will in fact be the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach next season. The news comes as no surprise, but the finality of it didn’t come until today. Also heard today that Turner will be held over from the old staff, nothing concrete, just a guy who has told me stuff in the past that panned out.
