TCP Football Yearbook Q&A: Joker explains 'what gives me hope'

  • I really liked this: "This guy gives us a chance to have someone even better than Trevard because he’s 200 pounds and physical. He’s Trevard Lindley at 200 pounds, that’s what he is."

"Apparently the University of Kentucky basketball dynasty is to continue forever." - Philadelphia Inquirer, December 23 1954.

  • What a fantastic interview, Darrell. Thank you very much. Joker seemed as open & candid as can be.

  • Thanks for the interview Darrell! I'm ready for some football!

please, please let this pan out too.... We need our WR's to start catching the ball consistently and in order for UK to move up the SEC ladder we must be different and can't play smash mouth football as we simply lack the depth for it. Plus, this is more exciting for the majority of the fans and would garner more excitement and positive vibes for Joker and company. I love smash mouth football and solid defense but for Joker's sake and the sake of UK football they need to excite the fans by being less predictable than in the past.

You announced in April plans to throw the football more in 2012, maybe to the tune of 65 percent pass, 35 percent run.

At the end of the day- Joker Phillips, Randy Sanders, and Chuck Smith have a significant potion of responsibility for many of those "misses". I think this is one of the biggest reasons the fan base is still skeptical about the staff. To say Joker and others shouldn't be partially responsible for those misses is foolish.

I disagree. Many of those misses are attributable to coaches who are no longer on the staff and those coaches are no longer on the staff for a reason. Sanders has been pretty good on the trail. I have been a bit critical of the job chuck did under brooks but you can't blame him for having 3/5 of his staff who were awful recruiters.

Since joker was put in charge of the entire staff and had the opportunity to put his own staff together recruiting has improved a ton. He was able to rid himself This year of the virus that was Steve brown and things will improve on the field and on the recruiting trail.

Then maybe Brooks should have had more recruiters on staff.

1/9 of the coaching staff being responsible for 1/4 of the class? Sounds like a bad equation.

Joker addressed this with his staff...wants 2-4 players per coach.

Exactly. I'm not sure how some people missed that part. Of course those guys had some misses. 3 guys were doing the recruiting of 9 guys. Definitely gonna have some misses in there when that is the case. Joker has tried to remedy this by having a staff in which all the coaches are recruiting and pulling their weight.

Overall I'd like to thank Darrel for this awesome interview. It was a great read.

I'm feeling pretty decent about our chance to turn in a good year. Seems like Joker is making a whole lotta sense.

  • Recruiting has taken a major uptick in the last two classes. That is due to Joker getting coaches that get it in regard to recruiting today's football players. The improvement in recruiting will mean greater success on the field this fall, but particularly in 2013. We need Joker to be successful. It is the best thing for UK football long-term.

  • I just hope Timmons doesn't commit to ARK over the weekend like some are saying, talking about a miss... If we miss on that kid as well as all the other 5 4 stars my heart will really be broken... I may just cry... Seriously if he commits to ARK this weekend it'll feel like it's over for this 13 class already... Rumors are that TX, and several other schools are beating Drennon's door down now since the great performances along side of Hyde... It sucks that all these other SEC schools have kids that take pride in playing for their home team, yet ours don't at all this year... I don't care if I was the number 1 player in the country I would play for UK, period. If I lived in BAMA, I would play for BAMA. I know that's ignorant logic but that's just the way I am. I know if we didn't get out of state kids we couldn't compete for the most part but still I don't see how we MAY go 0 for 6 on instate 4 stars...

I agree with this, and I think they were pretty good classes, especially given the fact that we had a disappointing offense in 2009 and a disappointing season (in my opinion) in 2010. I am somewhat cautious though, as I thought 2010 was really a breakthrough class, but attrition has whittled it down considerably.

Joker being successful, or at least having a modicum of success in 2012 isn't just desirable, I believe it's a must this year. Recruiting still looks about like it has the previous two years, however. I wanted to make a post saying it looks like we're projecting more this year, but looking back on the '11 and '12 classes, we clearly projected kids like Forrest, Smith and Bookie ('11) and Sweat, Meyers and Graffree ('12).

I think the program getting into the upper third of CFB recruiting is a step forward, compared to where we have been in the past. However, I stand by my statement that it's very important that we look competent and competitive this year so that we can finish as strongly as we have the previous two. We have to continue stepping forward and a step back, particularly in recruiting, will be devastating for the program in the next 3-4 years.

Still a lot of time to finish the 2013 class in style. It doesn't look great at the moment but that could chance pretty quickly especially if we have some success on the field this year.
