As July dawns for the 2013 class, only three of the top 20 have committed, and just 33 of the top 100. Players ranked between 51-100 have been a bit more eager to lock in offers, but those with the most options are in no rush to exercise them.
“I think what happened was, a lot more truth was told in the spring,” ESPN recruiting analyst Dave Telep told Sporting News. “What you had in the past, some guys got pushed by schools to commit because the schools didn’t see them all spring and they were worried they didn’t have any commitments.
“Coaches being out in the spring put a restrictor plate on it. They made better decisions. I think the quiet message has been: Let these guys earn it a little more. When you’ve got a higher number of early commitments, you’ve got a higher number of bad commitments.”
