Tee Martin leaving Cats for USC

  • Matt May said...

To me it is pretty simple: Just like 99 percent of basketball assistant coaches would crawl over broken glass to land an assistant gig at Kentucky, football coaches would do the same at USC. Exposure, money, athletes, tradition, alums in high places in the business, everything.

This. Football at USC is like basketball at Kentucky, would any of you bat an eyelid if a basketball assistant from USC came to UK? That would be seen as a simple decision to make, I know we all love UK football but let's take the blinkers off!

  • I wonder what he's making at USC.. Wasn't he making 300k at UK. Let's say he's making 450k at USC. Man that's essentially the same as making 300k living in Lexington. SoCal is not a cheap place to live...

  • you got that right!!! Kiffin and his crew are some of the biggest cheaters there are sorry to see Martin go there got a little less respect for him now

  • disappointing news for sure but this is a move that is great for Tee and at the end of the day he has to look out for what is best for him and his family.

USC is going to be preseason #1, they are going to be very good next year before they start feeling the effects of probation. Tee has a real chance of winning a NC next year.

Its not going to be hard to be the WR coach for a team that has Robert Woods (111 for 1292 and 15) and Marquis Lee (73 for 1143 and 11), these guys are studs and future 1st rounders.

If SC wins the NC next year and Woods will get drafted in the 1st round Tee could parlay that success into a good OC job if he wanted to or stay at SC and keep building his profile

At the end of the day Tee will be an OC in the SEC its just a matter of where.

I don't think it has much to do with seeing the writing on the wall.
I thi k it has all to do with advancing his career.
WR coach at USC > WR coach at uk
He has a great chance at getting a ring this year which would put him in a different class of coaches that have rings both as players and coaches.
Good luck to him and maybe we will see him on our staff again in the future.

And what happens to his career if Lane hasn't learned his lesson and he lands the program and that staff in trouble with the NCAA...again!

To me its just crazy that he turned down going home to Alabama (THE PROGRAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL) and learning from a vastly superior coach in Sabin for Lane Kiffin and a program fresh off probation.

I'm not sure Alabama ever actually offered the job. There were discussions, but not sure it got so far as an offer. As for Kiffin, it shouldn't affect any assistants who are on staff should something shady happen if they aren't involved.

That's true Matt, but IMO there are programs that wouldn't want any link to Kiffin in any way should they get in trouble again. Its called guilt by association. JMO

I like that... I love "T" as a recruiter. People can say what they want (like they are on other sites) but "T" is the best we've got especially down south. IMO to be a good recruiter you must have a good personality and "T" has a great personality plus he can say "I've won a National Title". Just like others have said, he won't have problems making a name as a good coach out there... USC IMO could have played with BAMA or LSU this year. By the end of the year they were very good, Lane is a very good coach he's just a Douche bag of a person... "T" will do well at SC, I just hope Joker can find someone with a good personality and credentials to be the wr coach.

I honestly like the idea of going after another young guy with a good resume. This is a big loss, i'm not sure we can find another as good as "T" was.

My understanding down here is that the job was his if he wanted it, but UK made the move to convince him to stay. Saban wasn't going to just throw the offer out there unless he knew it would be accepted.

  • Why did it have to be Kiffin.....sux. He will be missed.

Normally I would never dog an assistant for taking a better job, but Kiffin has it in him to ruin Tee's career. If....nah....when the Trojans get busted again for cheating, I hope Kiffin doesn't take down Tee with him.

It's not about the money it's about the program and all that comes with being at an elite program. Just like when Memphis offered Cal more money than UK to stay, it wasn't about the money, it was about coaching at Kentucky.

I think that's the best way to look at it. At least he's not going to be in Knoxville... for now.

Honestly, I could see Tee getting several more years of solid experience and making a run at one of the top assistant jobs at TN. He's a guy I really think they'd get fired up about. Maybe years down the road, we could see his name tossed around as a HC candidate in Vol Nation.

Sad to see him go, but here's to hoping we get someone really solid on the recruiting trail to replace him. That's what always sucked about Joker becoming HC...he was one of our best recruiters and now he doesn't get sent out nearly as much for obvious reasons.

I tend to agree. You also have the opportunity to set up your next gig better with the type of athletes he'll be coaching at USC. They'll have the potential to be one of the best offenses in the country, while UK has a ton of question marks in 2012 and a head coach who could be on the hot seat.

A sinking ship?? Seeing the writing on the wall?? I have to disagree with the above poster. Tee just took a great opportunity. I don't see how anyone can truly be angry with his decision. Am I disappointed at the fact that he's gone? Yes. Do I think we'll find someone who can replace his recruiting ability? I sure as hell hope so.

I don't really care what kind of position coach Tee was at UK. Recruiting, Recruiting, Recruiting...That's all that matters. Joker needs to find the best replacement for him, ASAP! I don't care if the guys doesn't even know what a football looks like, as long as he can bring talent to UK.

    Best post yet.

  • Jeff you are right, I mentioned "Hot-Seat" the other day and got blasted but lets face it the truth is the truth. If we go 500 I think Joker is fine, do I want to go 500? NO!!! but being competitive in most all games is what I want to see, I know South Carolina will be very good but we have enough talent (young) but enough talent to be fine. We just have to get some of these young guys developed. If some of these young guys kill it in the gym and we can beat or play very well against UofL, WKU and Vandy I think Joker will stick around if we loose any of those by 30+ again than i'm not sure what will happen. One thing is for sure, Mitch and CO need to atleast come up with a contract ext (with some clauses if they want) so some of these young recruits don't feel like it's over for Joker before it is... We have a ton of good looking recruits already checking us out for the 13 class, we don't have many SS so quality is of upmost importance... I hope some of those things gets ironed out for the sake of the program...

  • I don't post very often, but I have been reading for sometime now. I bleed blue and will always want uk to be good but the reality of it is Kentucky will never be a great football school we will never get the talent needed to succeed in the mighty sec we will have some good years 7 maybe 8 wins but nothing more. Tee was a very well know guy for recruiting but I was not impressed with his results on the field. I wish him well, maybe it's that he could of landed the high profile recruits but they wanted no part in coming to a frankly a lame football school. I know I wouldn't I would much rather go to a bama or Florida or for that matter south Carolina before uk. I hope we can make that jump but I never see it and I am not saying we haven't had good even a few great players but one or two at a time is not going to cut it. And they were under rated from the start only reason we landed them. I wish the program the best and want who ever is in charge atthe time to succeed but we all see us getting to a level we won't reach. And if we do I will gladly eat every piece of that crow.
