The Anthony Davis Fatigue Factor

  • Will AD's body be able to handle a long college season, the Olympics, and 6 month NBA season?

    Keepin in fresh since 1986.

That's a good question and one I hadn't really thought about. I think his legs are young enough to do it. And besides, the experience he'll get during these Olympics is going to prove invaluable to his career.

  • In some ways, he may be working "less" while playing in the Olympics than had he been in Nola training every day. Once the actual Olympics stateted they aren't practicing much at all. With ad not playing much he's probably going to be fine...

  • Watched the game today against France and he was dogging it. He wasn't hustling down the court. That won't get him much favor with rat face I'm sure. He should've been trailing regardless to show he wants more PT.

  • With the high school season and AAU basketball these guys are playing games and/or conditioning year round from when they are very young . . . Don't think it's as much of an issue as it was 20 or 30 years ago. . .

  • It can't be an excuse. All the NBA had a more grueling schedule than UK. Throw in playoff runs by half the Olympic team and they really have been busy. AD is 19, his body should be fine, mentally maybe there is some strain to comprehend how fast everything is moving.

  • I think all the above are on the right track. When I first read the OP, I immediately considered the baseball young pitchers mantra--never add more than 30 innings to a kid year over year. But, I think the comment about the almost year-round AAU circuit is on point; these kids today are way more used to continuous basketball than ever before.

I think the only thing that comes into play is when you have a compressed season like the NBA did this year, where the average days off between games were drastically reduced and we saw a lot of fatigue down the stretch, but this was due IMO to less time available to get rest and treatment, not actually the longevity of the season.

I don't think it's a big worry, but I think that's a potential factor. Just in a span of a little more than two years, the kid has gone from a mid-sized guard on a nowhere high school team to playing on the current version of the Dream Team, with a stop along the way for an NCAA championship and POY.

He's probably not being taxed as much at the Olympics as he would at an AAU tournament, but at AAUs they roll out of bed, play a game, and go back to the sack. I expect that it's a little harder to come off the gametime adrenaline when you go back to the hotel with LeBron and Kobe.

Everything about AD defies nature, so it's probably nothing to be too concerned about. It's just an amazing story.

    Don't worry he'll block it.

  • He would've been playing (and starting) in the NBA Summer League and working out in NOLA anyway, so I don't think it makes that much of a difference in over taxing him. Despite his size, he actually holds up surprisingly well. I'd be more concerned if he had started to show some wear during last season.
