There is a logic to keep Joker with so many SEC jobs in play

  • I wish we had made the move last year. My biggest complaint with Joker other than results on the field, is that he is just uninspiring. We are all in agreement that he is a "UK Guy," would never leave us etc. We all agree that we TRULY wanted him to succeed. But. . is he truly a spokesman for the program other than running a clean outfit. Anyone who has seen an interview would say no. Send him to Sandler sales training or even toast masters!

My questions is. . it might be good to wait a year simply because there are so many jobs in flux in the SEC. With that many openings, KY is not going to have the "chance to coach in the SEC" chip to play.

Let's look at the schools. This year you have certain coaching changes at AK, potential ones at TN, Auburn, Florida and of course KY.

That is a good deal of SEC job openings. Has there ever been a year when the conference has that much turnover?

There is an argument to be made that this year is not the right year for a coaching change, when our biggest sale point is going to have a murky pond.

Lets look to next year. . . assuming changes are made at the above, other recent hirings. . what jobs will be open?

Worth talking about. I don't have the answer but am curious to see what folks think.

    Great post ... +1

NONE of can agree on what the answer is... but ALL of us can agree that we need a change

  • In theory I would agree with the sentiment on waiting due to all the potential higher profile openings. However being in the last year of his contract without an extension would make it very difficult to recruit.
Every coach would use this in recruiting against UK by putting the fear of a coaching change in the recruits first year.

Ultimately I believe that we just need to make the change, sooner the better.
    cheers

  • There is no reason to bring Joker back next year. No intelligent ones anyway.

  • Y'know I would stand keeping Joker for 2013 if it would mean a promise that both he and Barnhart were gone that December. The man has no right nor confidence from the fanbase to hire the correct coach, none.

The man thought Joker could step right in and match coaching skills in the very best college football conference, the incubator for national championship teams. The man thought Billy Clyde Gillispie a wise choise to lead our hallowed basketball program....an then failed to get the drunk to sign a proper contract for 2 years, ultimately costing UK $3 million from what should have been an open & shut justifiable termination case.

  • My biggest question, hypothetical at that, is what coaching jobs in the SEC will be open next year assuming that changes are made at AK, possibly Auburn and either TN or FL. You have to bet on one of the two. . but Freeze will be there at Ole Miss, Mullen at State, Franklin at Vandy. The rest are pretty much set in stone.

Just seems like from a "good hire" standpoint that next year might be our best opportunity. Course it is still a roll of the dice. Auburn, FL and TN might play the course (as well as KY) and we are right back to where we are now.

But yes, I agree. . we need to make a change. Might be in the cards to wait a year though.

And please tell me that it will not be a one man decision and the search will go as basketball did. We as fans deserve that.

  • I guess I just don't get the reasoning in waiting another year. Why in the hell would we set our program back another year, I don't care who we bring in or call the coach in waiting.

IMO, every single day this staff wakes up to coach this team sets us back even farther, Screw another year, we all deserve better.

  • There are always going to be jobs open at the same time. That's just the nature of college football these days. Florida is dedicated to Muschamp and he won't get canned for at least another season until Meyer's mess is out of town. Auburn would have to buy out Chiz at the tune of $7.5 million I believe and I'm convinced that's why they sent Malzahn down to get his feet wet at another school. So that leaves Tennessee and Arkansas.

If you wait a year you potentially have South Carolina (Spurrier's retirement is always a possibility) and Vandy (if Franklin moves up to another position). And then there's no telling who else ends up with an opening for unforeseen reasons. If Dooley wins enough games to buy himself some time you can include Tennessee in that group too.

Waiting to make a move because of other openings is doing a disservice to your program.

  • When you know you have to make a change, you make it sooner rather than later. You don't try to out-think yourself and strategize on timing, etc. Not firing last year was a mistake. No need to compound the mistake and throw 2013 into the bin along with 2012.
