Think we have our answer on Harrell

  • Joe Davis from Scouts Focus reporting that the father of Montrezl Harrell is claiming a top four of Louisville, Cincinnati, Alabama and Florida with interest from Illinois, Arkansas, LSU, Pitt and South Carolina.

    No UK.

In other words, the Cats said, "thanks but no thanks."

  • Dang, he is the kind of bruiser most teams need.

I think it all came down to Cal's rotation and how he doesn't like to take minutes away from the top guys he recruits. That's all part of his development plan to get guys ready for their NBA dreams.

I just hope he doesn't get burned with a lack of depth some year when we can win a title but are 1 player short. That is my biggest fear with his recruiting and really the only fear I have with Cal recruiting

    Seriously? Wow.

This is good. We are probably deepe than last year. I see 7.5 in next uear'a rotation as opposed to 6.5 from this uear'a team.

  • this should tell people either cal feels really good about cauley r the reports that they really like hood at the 4 are true. either way i am fine with a rotation of harrow goodwin poythress wiltjer noel mays cauley hood thats a top 8 with all top 50 players tell me another team in the sec r the country that has that.

    quagmire

  • I trust in Cal enough to be okay with missing out on Harrell. I think Hood and Cauley can produce enough good mins off the bench when the starters need breaks. We might run a little smaller in some lineups but no one in the SEC is really huge. I feel good about this team to win the conference and make a run in the NCAA. Win it? Maybe not, but I think they can surprise some people. I really like Poythress, Goodwin, Noel, Wiltjer, and an experienced PG in Harrow...should be fun to watch

I'll agree with you on the "Wow," but that is about all. We are nowhere near as deep as last year and the reason is one guy -- Darius Miller. Our entire bench is Mays (transfer from a mid-major), Hood (coming off a major injury and hasn't proven himself), and Cauley-Stein (conflicting reports, but may not be ready for major minutes). I like all those guys, but if someone gets hurt, we are in serious trouble. Last year, that wouldn't have been the case (unless it was Davis!).

  • I just hope we don't suffer an injury. One injury last year in the back court would have cost us the title. Having another player on the roster is not that big a deal in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how this year develops. Cal has run out of multi year UK players (with the exception of Wiltjer) who have played a large role in his first 3 teams. Harrow will help but we don't have a Miller, Patterson, Liggins, Stevenson, or Harrellson like we had in the past.

Wasn't necessarily refering to next years team. Cal is the best recruiter in the game and I have complete faith in him that wasn't my point. Just would hate to see a team lose the chance to compete for a title with schollys still available for a player of Harrell's caliber turned down. Don't think next year that will be the case I just hope Hood is fully recovered.

    cully26

  • There isn't a team in the nation that can suffer a major injury and win a title. Having Harrell likely wouldn't have changed that for us.

Again, don't compare this Team to last urar's once in a generation top
Ten of all time team. Compare them to our team from two years ago that played 6 guys, total. Looks pretty good huh?

    hoptownukfan

  • Harrell certainly wasn't a make or break level guy but we look a little thin up front. This is the first year without some talented multi year players with some maturity. We will see how it works out. It will be different than any of Cal's other UK teams in my opinion. Who knows. Cal may have someone else up his sleeve. You can't really question his results.

    zcats

  • The way I see it, if we win it all or come close this year great. But Cal is setting up 2013 for the big yr.
UK should have 3 or 4 of this yrs rotation back, to go with what is setting up to be a just mind blowing class that could be commmmmmmming in.
Cal will have a big time dif offensive game plan this yr. Alot of pick and rolls, and set plays.
The big key to this yr my friends will be HOOD, make no mistake for UK to have a big yr he has to be a ton better.

I think that is a little short sighted. You could also say that having Harrell might keep us from landing a lottery pick talent next year or the following. You don't get it both ways. You either are on board with how Cal does it or you are not but hard to argue with success.

    bigcat65

  • Looks like his dad is running the show and calling the shots. Cal going to load up for the 2013-2014 season.

    BRAVE DEMON

  • Knowing what we know about UK's depth or lack thereof, I think Cal not wanting Harrell speaks even more to the fact that Harrell isn't an impact-type player.

    1 - Ryan Harrow/Julius Mays

    2 - Archie Goodwin/Julius Mays

    3 - Alex Poythress/Jon Hood

    4 - Kyle Wiltjer/Willie Cauley

    5 - Nerlens Noel/Willie Cauley

The rotation was pretty much set. Not a huge loss IMO.

  • A lot of people worry about Wiltjer's defense.

    1. I think he will have improved from last year to next.

    2. Two words: Nerlens Noel. Have a feeling much like Anthony Davis, he's going to be able to mask a lot of defensive deficiencies.

and you've gotta think with Wiltjer being on the other side of the lane, the help defense from Noel will be alot like it was from Davis. LOTS of weakside help blocks

    Question,

it seems that it is foregone conclusion that Julius Mays will come off the bench. Is that pretty secured? Like, is there any possibility of Harrow coming off the bench?

just wondering, don't know much about either of them currently.

Harrow is probably going to start, man. He's already had a year in the system, which puts him above Mays - imo.

    In short, no.

  • Harrow is gonna be LIGHT years ahead of Mays. He was able to practice last year against Teague and Lamb and whoever else was playing at point. And besides, Mays is still finishing up course work at Wright St., am I right Chris??

Right. I would expect all of UK's guys to be on campus at some point next month.
