Not having enough quality players to fill out the team is an issue. Frankly, its probably the only complaint that I have about how Cal goes about things. There is nobody on the bench that forces Poythress to play hard all the time. Nobody to make Archie be more selfless. Nobody to make Harrow toughen up. Nobody to sub for Willie now that Noel is gone. I just think that it is part of the game to expect injuries or other problems that may keep players out of the game for an extended time. However, I also have to think that it is very tough to recruit guys that think they may never play for 2 or 3 yrs. So what do you do? If Cal could find a way to get players 8-10 some minutes on a somewhat regular basis, I think maybe we could find some to spend some schollies on and that would probably be assets to us in practice and taking up the slack when necessary. I know it is not Cals way, but it has come back to bite us this yr. And just to be clear, I am much much much happier with Cal than those before him. But nobody is perfect and maybe this is one thing that needs addressed to make us stronger in future years.

I hope we don't have to see too many of these type posts on here.
Cal won a title last year. He'll be in play to win another next year. If we hadn't lost Noel we'd at least have a puncher's chance this year.
It's not the recruiting.
I will down vote the OP and if I have more they will go in this thread too.
This OP is what bad posting looks like.

Outside of Bennett, bazz, and Noel.... No freshman in the country has impressed me this year. We have none of those guys. It's just a down freshman class. For once, our freshmen are truly freshmen. I don't blame anybody. We just have to get through it. Knowing these guys are leaving, though, it just makes me dislike them.

Not singling you out on my response ... I've seen a lot of this same post this year. Fact is, when you really look at it ... no elite teams have deep benches with 8-10 serious contributors. While some may go one or two deeper than UK typically does, that's just not how major college basketball rosters are made up. I went back and looked at the previous 20 national champions and only once or twice ('96 UK being one) did a champion have more than 7 or 8 regular contributors.
Almost every single year, it's 7 or 8 players that make up the major contributors ... and it's not just Cal doing that ... that's how everyone does it. There's not one top-25 team this year (or in almost any year) with 10 players that all average over 10 minutes a game and/or score more than a basket or so a game.

Kentucky has the ability to use 13 basketball scholarships. We have at best 7 scholarship players on this team and one is injured and cannot play. This is a result of poor recruiting by the staff. I understand that we would like to have a great freashman class each year with most of those players moving on the NBA, but we have at least 5 spots open with no real players to fill them.
Does the basketball program need the money?? I doubt it. Are there no players interested in a developing role on this team? I doubt it.
So why are are there no 3 or 4 star players on the team? Not one player out there would like that oppurtunity?? I don't think so. Just wondering who does the magnicent seven practice against? This team is not balanced in it's recruiitng and that problem lays squarely on the head coach.
Please reply

Most teams in general, championship or not, really just gave 7-8 serious contributors. The difference is, most teams don't just have those 7 or 8 and then a handful of PG walk-ons like we do. I think msdcatfan's point was not that we need more to play in games, but that we need more guys who can push the contributors in practice while developing for a couple of years in case they are needed in times like this.

And yet Vargus stayed for 2-3 years.
Harrelson 4 years
In Harrelson's last year we were lucky to have Kanter in pratice to push Harrelson.
This team has no one.
When you have the head job it's all yours every year.
Just admit it he swung for the fences and he struck out.
In no way do I suggest we replace him because this is the first time he has had this trouble. It seems from other posts that most think Noel, Godwin, and Polthress will be gone for one reason or another. I think our bench next year will be vastly improved over this year because of Willis, Stein and Wiltjer.
