This team is what bad recruiting looks like

  • Kentucky has the ability to use 13 basketball scholarships. We have at best 7 scholarship players on this team and one is injured and cannot play. This is a result of poor recruiting by the staff. I understand that we would like to have a great freashman class each year with most of those players moving on the NBA, but we have at least 5 spots open with no real players to fill them.

Does the basketball program need the money?? I doubt it.
Are there no players interested in a developing role on this team? I doubt it.

So why are are there no 3 or 4 star players on the team? Not one player out there would like that oppurtunity??
    I don't think so.
Just wondering who does the magnicent seven practice against? This team is not balanced in it's recruiitng and that problem lays squarely on the head coach.

  • Bad group in general. Lost out on Bazz and Bennett and it shows. Also, the hard chase after Oriachi really tells us that the staff knew they needed help. I hope these kids realize that if they go to the draft they may well be in the D league for 3 -5 years. Better to return and learn in practice and in a couple years try their hand at the pros. If your headed to the d league , its better to go into it with a college degree.

  • I agree wholeheartedly this is about poor recruiting .By poor recruiting I mean too many of the same kind of players .I think we have several guys that play the same positions .When they are on the court at the same time all of them are confused .

  • I hope we don't have to see too many of these type posts on here.

Cal won a title last year. He'll be in play to win another next year. If we hadn't lost Noel we'd at least have a puncher's chance this year.

    It's not the recruiting.

I will down vote the OP and if I have more they will go in this thread too.

  • Only a KY fan can post after pulling in 3 straight #1 classes that this is what bad recruiting looks like. I'll tell you why there aren't that many 3-4 star players on the roster. Because they usually want to play. They transfer like Poole did, they got hurt like Becham and Hood did or they decide they want to play versus sit like Lacey did. Geez, what an idiotic post. Tell me again, next year how bad our recruiting is ace.

  • Not having enough quality players to fill out the team is an issue. Frankly, its probably the only complaint that I have about how Cal goes about things. There is nobody on the bench that forces Poythress to play hard all the time. Nobody to make Archie be more selfless. Nobody to make Harrow toughen up. Nobody to sub for Willie now that Noel is gone. I just think that it is part of the game to expect injuries or other problems that may keep players out of the game for an extended time. However, I also have to think that it is very tough to recruit guys that think they may never play for 2 or 3 yrs. So what do you do? If Cal could find a way to get players 8-10 some minutes on a somewhat regular basis, I think maybe we could find some to spend some schollies on and that would probably be assets to us in practice and taking up the slack when necessary. I know it is not Cals way, but it has come back to bite us this yr. And just to be clear, I am much much much happier with Cal than those before him. But nobody is perfect and maybe this is one thing that needs addressed to make us stronger in future years.

Not singling you out on my response ... I've seen a lot of this same post this year. Fact is, when you really look at it ... no elite teams have deep benches with 8-10 serious contributors. While some may go one or two deeper than UK typically does, that's just not how major college basketball rosters are made up. I went back and looked at the previous 20 national champions and only once or twice ('96 UK being one) did a champion have more than 7 or 8 regular contributors.

Almost every single year, it's 7 or 8 players that make up the major contributors ... and it's not just Cal doing that ... that's how everyone does it. There's not one top-25 team this year (or in almost any year) with 10 players that all average over 10 minutes a game and/or score more than a basket or so a game.

  • Outside of Bennett, bazz, and Noel.... No freshman in the country has impressed me this year. We have none of those guys. It's just a down freshman class. For once, our freshmen are truly freshmen. I don't blame anybody. We just have to get through it. Knowing these guys are leaving, though, it just makes me dislike them.

We will have to get use to seasons like this. UK will be a beast one yr and because of who leaves and who stays we will have down yrs. Its not the coaches fault this is just the way it fell this yr.

Uk will have 2 or more players back next yr to round out a super class coming in.

Punch cal and UK this yr but next yr Uk will lay the smack down on teams like Tenn.

This is going to go down as one of the weaker NBA drafts. This freshman class just stinks, in general.

I think msdcatfan's point was not that we need more to play in games, but that we need more guys who can push the contributors in practice while developing for a couple of years in case they are needed in times like this.

Honestly I don't think you have a clue about how recruiting goes. I can go back and show you the rankings on these kids and not a one of them said that they were definite one and dones. Their playing backs me up but it doesn't mean that they are bad players, they are only players that need more then one year to reach their potential, not the nba kind. Some like you on here thinks that every four star basketball player is standing in line to sit our bench and play maybe 2 minutes a game in most years(think next year). Those kind of players are not abundant. So change your name, cawood would never act like that, and come back next year with your whiny remarks and lets see how they work out then.

    Bingo!

    msdcatfan

  • Nothing whiny to the remarks. The coach sets up the roster. This roster is very poorly set up. I asked if there were any 3 or 4' that would want the oppurtunity to develope at Kentucky. There must be some.
The practices must so lop sided with the talent in total that they do not challenge the better players, note just look at the first three years. When a coach recruits so many that are shooting for one year you have failure. Last years team had 2 soph and a senior go to the nba. This team should probably have only 1.
If this was a regular job the performance would cause management to question the business practice.
Sorry you felt so attacked .

I have enjoyed the discussion non the less. Cawood

That's because most teams do not have the recruiting bonanzas we tend to have. So they can attract and keep the less talented players some here want. This dynamic has been explained time and time again.

I just don't know why Kentcuky needs to fill it's roster with walk on's.

    Or why it has to.

    Cal doesn't fill his
roster with walk-ons. Last I checked we had the following 5 star players.
    Harrow
    Poythruss
    Goodwin
    Noel
    Wiltjer
    The following 4 stars
    Hood
    WCS
    The following 3 stars
    Beckham

Of course its Cal's fault that Noel blew out his knee and its certainly his lack of coaching ability that has held the team back. If only he knew how to coach young teams. Sadly for you, Cal has 4 MD AA signed with another committed. Maybe Cal will tell D. Johnson to look elsewhere and stop the recruitment of Wiggins, Gordon and Randel and instead recruit less talented players to make you happy. Of course I don't remember you cussing Cal's recruiting practices the past couple of years when we went to FFs and won a NC.

Correct, and we have been lucky enough they weren't needed....until this year. This is also the first year we haven't had experienced returned. First year we had Patterson, Miller, Liggins and Harrellson. Second year was the same group of vets, minus PP. Last year was Miller, Jones and Lamb. This year? Wiltjer. Next year? Who knows, but likely just Wiltjer and Polson.

And yet Vargus stayed for 2-3 years.

    Harrelson 4 years

In Harrelson's last year we were lucky to have Kanter in pratice to push Harrelson.

    This team has no one.

When you have the head job it's all yours every year.

Just admit it he swung for the fences and he struck out.

In no way do I suggest we replace him because this is the first time he has had this trouble. It seems from other posts that most think Noel, Godwin, and Polthress will be gone for one reason or another. I think our bench next year will be vastly improved over this year because of Willis, Stein and Wiltjer.

I'm not too sure what statement you are trying to make....I suspect their is plenty of talent on this team for each player to be "pushed" as much as you can "push" some players.... And yes you need the walk-on....notice the type of player Coach Cal chooses. Players that bust their butts on the court, as well as, in the classroom. Helps with the overall Team GPA. However.....you really think Goodwin, Harrow, Poythress aren't getting pushed this year in practice? That's just lunacy.....
