Cal doesn't fill his
roster with walk-ons. Last I checked we had the following 5 star players.
Harrow
Poythruss
Goodwin
Noel
Wiltjer
The following 4 stars
Hood
WCS
The following 3 stars
BeckhamOf course its Cal's fault that Noel blew out his knee and its certainly his lack of coaching ability that has held the team back. If only he knew how to coach young teams. Sadly for you, Cal has 4 MD AA signed with another committed. Maybe Cal will tell D. Johnson to look elsewhere and stop the recruitment of Wiggins, Gordon and Randel and instead recruit less talented players to make you happy. Of course I don't remember you cussing Cal's recruiting practices the past couple of years when we went to FFs and won a NC.

You hit paydirt last year because you had a mix of extraordinarily talented freshmen and experience. Darius Miller was the unsung hero of your team and was the key in beating us in the NCAA's. The key to your team next year will be the upper classmen who may return. If Polythrese (sp?) or Goodwin return, look out.

This is why coaches don't last at Kentucky. Nothing they do is ever right. Tubby didn't recruit well enough so he had to go. Gillispie was a mess so he had to go. Calipari goes to an Elite Eight, a Final Four and wins a title and then has one year where the formula doesn't work and people are angry. If you can't understand the connect between these types of criticisms and why the national perception of Kentucky fans is so low, well, I don't know that anything will ever make that point.
Calipari has made mistakes this year. He hasn't handled this team well. They've been worse in terms of their ability to buy in. But are we really to the point where there is an entire message board of complaining and freaking out because UK is struggling a year after a title and with what it's accomplished the past three years? Sheesh. No wonder people think UK fans are out of control.
Someone else said it best, 3 and 4-star guys want to play. They ain't coming to a place where they sit the bench for 3-4 years. You can't have it both ways. Either you're cool with the way Calipari does it (i.e. - his first three years) or you're not. You can't suddenly rip the guy and claim you can't construct a team like that when the pieces don't fit one year. Truth be told, I don't agree with the way Calipari does it but he's proven the blueprint works more often that not.

And yet Vargus stayed for 2-3 years.
Harrelson 4 years
In Harrelson's last year we were lucky to have Kanter in pratice to push Harrelson.
This team has no one.
When you have the head job it's all yours every year.
Just admit it he swung for the fences and he struck out.
In no way do I suggest we replace him because this is the first time he has had this trouble. It seems from other posts that most think Noel, Godwin, and Polthress will be gone for one reason or another. I think our bench next year will be vastly improved over this year because of Willis, Stein and Wiltjer.

The first three Cal years were awesome! No one can dispute that.
But this year has been...this year. Not that things have been great, but it's also the first major injury. Would we have had the same level of play in previous years if a major injury had occurred?
Does this change the model going forward? Probably not, but it would certainly seem like the transfer pursuit last year means that Cal likely sees the concern for lack of a bench.

Hop, that gets me thinking. I wonder how this team would be performing this year with Teague still manning the point? I'd say a pretty noticable difference. I also wonder how much difference Teague would have had in his draft position, had he stayed for another year. Think he may have gone all the way up to a lottery pick? Not sure of the difference in salary structure for a lottery pick vs #28 (is that right? can't remember) but its gotta be pretty significant.

I think we need to target kids that will be juniors and seniors after they sit out a year. Kids that have at least two years of experience playing college basketball. And I'm not sure Beckham even counts since he was never offered a scholly. If we're going the transfer route we need to go after the best players possible. Mays is a 5th year transfer. He certainly fits the bill and as you've seen he's been one of our more solid players especially of late. Wish we could have a carbon copy of him for next years team. Plus its not like I'm saying that we've never done these things. We have and need to continue to do them. We need more experience and more talented experience period.
