This year's B-ball team...

  • could be really REALLY good.

i was like many that considered this year to be potentially rougher year than the other years, but looking at few things made me think this might be extremely strong team.

    1. Weak college teams overall. Indiana, louisville, as a one of top teams? Sure they got experience and little talent, but they don't ooze with NBA talent and experience (See UK, UNC, Syracuse, even Kansas had NBA players).

    2. super size and athleticism. Sure none of the players are john wall athletic. But, when you combine crazy height 7'1" with running capability, you can do a lot of good. Our line up could be 6'8", 7'1", 6'11". That's huge. Archie goodwin is 6'5" and Harrow at 6". That's quite the size.

    3. Shooting is weaker but stronger than 09 team. With Wiltjer, Harrow, and Mays our shooting is a lot better than that 09 team. With Wiltjer more than likely getting a lot more minutes, and being able to provide doron lamb like shooting, we should be more than sufficient at the 3 point shooting.

    4. long and athletic means strong defense, and with deeper 4/5 we have more capability to absorbing foul. Last year it was Davis and Jones... This year we have Nerlens, Wiltjer, and Cauely-stein. I say we are able to absorb foul easier than last year, as well as fatigue (SEC tourney). Also, i am sure Poythress can play 4 if needed. (He is actually big, he has length)

I'm actually thinking we should be 1 seed going to NCAA tourney.

    Am i crazy?

  • No you're not crazy. Ever since the final roster shook out I felt we will end up a 1 seed. I think by years end we will be the top team.

  • I think there is definitely going to be a little bit longer learning curve this year, especially having to play Maryland and Duke right off the bat, plus Notre Dame before November is over. Noel not getting to campus until a few weeks ago and missing out on all that individual instruction, strength program and team building stuff is significant, too.

Ultimately you're right though, college basketball is pretty wide open these days and next year looks especially so. I was putting together a 1st and 2nd Team All-SEC today for our basketball yearbook and was shocked at how little 'known' and elite talent there is. But this team isn't going to be last year's team, and I don't think near as good. It can still be a Final Four team if everything comes together but last year was just on a whole other level.

  • I don't love the roster from a basketball standpoint. Unproven all over the place, shooting questions, and no banger inside. However when you look around the roster looks very strong compared to the rest of college basketball which is by far the biggest thing we have going for us. From a fan standpoint I think this will be a very fun team to watch, just really different than our recent squads.
