Timeframe on hiring new football coach?

  • I know it's a sensitive issue as Joker's going to coach the final two games, but I can only presume that they're going to get this done as quickly as possible. The new HC needs to be able to hit the ground running and focus on hiring his staff and determining what to do with this year's recruiting class.

  • I believe there is a waiting period after the position has been publically posted on UK's website. I think it like 10-14 days from public posting.

    I could be wrong...though

  • I wouldn't expect anything until December, but you never know. It would be a mistake to wait until January. The thing is, if UK hires from a bowl bound team, then UK will likely not see said coach until after their bowl game. All depends on how confident they are in their top candidates and how receptive the candidates are to the pitch.

If they really visited Tuscaloosa today, then they are VERY serious about Kirby Smart.

  • How much do you think they'd have to pay Kirby Smart to leave Alabama? I think he already makes $950k a year.

  • Correct. UK could do $2 million easily. Smart is unproven though, so I don't know how much they would feel comfortable risking.

There is technically a waiting period, but not for these types of positions or even UK Administrative positions. You go find the right person and then fill out the paperwork later. I am sure the paperwork is technically completed before the official hire date, but that is not a real obstacle.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and it has made all the difference (Frost).

They need to go for the gusto and spend some freaking money! James Franklin is making $3 Million a year at Vandy...

  • really 2 mill, lol how much more for his staff, another 1.5 mill atleast. Where is this money going to come from ????? And then lets add the cost of recruiting at the level needed, 3 times what we are paying out now. What other programs are we going to shut down or out to pay for this ????

You're kidding yourself if you don't think UK has the money necessary to make a big splash here. Mitch himself said the money would not be an issue. I don't think they're going to pay an absurd amount of money to just anyone, but if the right guy was available and interested they would be able to.

RIGHT OKKKKKKK, LOL UK DOES NOT HAVE THE XTRA MONEY UNLESS IT COMES FROM DONERS.
YOU MUST LOOK AT LAST YRS BUDGET AND WHAT THEY HAD LEFT OVER WITHOUT GOING INTO THE CHEST FOR MORE.

NO OTHER SCHOOL SPENDS MONEY ON BASKETBALL LIKE AND THEN TRY TO SPEND A TON ON FOOTBALL. UNLESS ITS LIKE FLA WHO HAS A TON OF DONNNNNNERS AND MONEY FROM OTHER SOURCES. UK DOES NOT. HELL THEY CANT GET THE BONDING TO DO CRAP.

  • FB brought in 27 million last year. If we can't shake out 5-7 million for a FB coaching staff then you see the real problem. We are stripping the sport that brings in the money to royally support sports people don't care enough about to buy a cheap ticket to see. If UK doesn't fix this they will have to shut down a bunch of these non revenue sports. UK competes in more sports than any SEC school including rich schools like UF and UGA. It doesn't make sense. Football should get the first cut and only if there is money left over should it be shunted to other uses. A good football program pays for everything. Strip football and the whole mess runs dry.

How much can U of L afford to pay it's new coach...I mean after Strong bolts for a SEC gig in about a month?

He got a raise before the season. Bumped him up to $950,000.

  • I'll make a prediciton. If Mitch soesn't get a big time hire locked dowon quickly, we will end up hiring a retread. That fact will suck even worse, when Strong leaves and Juritch does what it takes to make a big splash follow up to Strong.

Mitch needs to be smart, but he also needs to move fast. I'm hopeful, but I don't have a lot of confidence.

  • I'd be shocked if you hear anything before the end of the regular season on Thanksgiving weekend. I guess if they hire someone not currently in the game it could come before but I don't think that will be the case.

They might know who their guy is before then but if they're grabbing another school's head coach or top assistant then I can't believe they'll announce it until that team's regular season is over.

I don't know and not to be a pisser I don't care about Lville. UK will have to pay out a ton more for its football program to move into the middle to upper sec.

Where will this money come from I do not know. COAL I GUESS AND ANDY BARR ?????

    dvillepro1

  • will take at least 6 mil a year to get right coach and staff in here. probably tho, it will be in 7-8 mil. range. it needs to be home run , coaches every other team Wants.

    bug

  • $6M puts you around the middle of the road for an SEC staff. That's certainly not out of the question. Last I saw, Joker is getting paid $1.7M per year with the rest of the staff making another $2M, plus. We are dead last in what we pay our coaches.

Factor in the fact that we've averaged about 16,000 below capacity at, say a $35 average ticket price. Over 7 home games, that's more than $3.9M lost PLUS whatever number you want to tack on for concessions. We have lost more in ticket revenue this season alone than we paid to our coaches.

Some would say we can't afford not to throw the bank at someone who can fill the seats.

Sonny Dykes makes $750k with the ability to make $1 million with bonuses. You are referencing his old contract.

They lost $1.5m in ticket sells at the Vandy game this past Saturday. They already pay Joker $1.8m, and a for the recruiting money they lost it in concession sales on Saturday. Money isn't an issue in that respect. It is if you are losing $3m a week in revenue. JMO

  • John Calipari makes roughly $4 million a year. You are incredibly naive if you don't think Kentucky could afford to pay a worthy coach the same.

  • And you need to get over the previous budget, because it wasn't seeing the profit that it should have. If the right coach is hired, football revenue could double in three years and see growth until that day.
