To All You Feel Good Football Fans.. Do You Remember

  • The Western Game? I think we trailed most of that, couldn't move the ball, and got big runs that saved our bacon to end up winning the game.

    How about the UofL game, that team got beat by Marshall, played a Tr Frosh at QB, and WR and smoked our SR Layden Secondary time and time again.

    Now let's not forget getting our ass handed to us by Vandy 38-8. We played ugly, uninspired football and got smacked by a 1st year coach!

    Live in the moment folks, glad we beat an even worse UT team than we are. I love this win because of how we did it as a team from top to bottom.

    What I don't like is the way we lost games this year. No adjustment to personnel unless you call running Morgan til ankle got broke an adjustment.

    Yes, I think Joker deserves next year, but unless we hear of some major changes in the staff and I mean Randy Sanders and his pro style door mat offense, next year will be a year of missed opportunities. Not just with this team but also on getting a coach who has been to bowl game every year he was a Head Coach..

    So enjoy today, and I guarantee I hear all you kool aid drinkers bitching next year about how we missed out on Leach!cant wait see you at CW

  • Love the optimism. Yet another fan that wants to see the glass as half empty. Look, I don't care how bad this UT was. UK had lost to the Vols for 26 straight years. There were years when the 'Cats were clearly the better team and found a way to lose. This year, Big Blue started a WR at QB, Matt Roark, who had not gotten a snap at that position in 5 years. The OC you trash, Randy Sanders, put together a game plan to put Roark in position to be successful and win the game. While we saw some troubling things throughout the season, we saw a better team the last two weeks against UGa, the SEC East Champion, and UT. Joker deserves another year and there is a lot of young talent that has played quite well as the season wound down. There is plenty to be optimistic about. Or, you can continue to wallow in misery. Your choice.

  • Is it the scheme? Coaching? Talent?

    The difference between 2007 and 2011 is talent. You can make the argument that we did a poor job of maintaining continuity from Dre / Stevie / Keenan / Little...and it's been much discussed on here how the Pulley disaster set us back.

    But is it fundamentally our scheme? The stats from 2007 say it's not the scheme (or coach).

    Just sayin...

    How many seniors were on that team...both sides of the ball. How many guys would at one time would be on a pro team? How may years did the QB and offense have in that system? Do you realize just how ridiculous those posts were?....of course you don't. Did this team struggle? Absolutely. Did they grossly underachieve ....not sure. Injury after injury. Freshman and sophomore dominated. You DO realize this team that you (and your buddy golfguy) wanna keep ripping and tearing down beat a UT team (favored by 8 and would have went bowling had Bray not Berenice hurt) with a walk on at RB, and a WR at QB that hadn't played QB in 4 years.

    And all of you Leach Lovers will always bitch that we never hired a coach no one else seems to want either. I predicted that if Morgan came into the season playing the way he had the past two seasons we would be looking at a 4-5 win season at the most. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Everyone moaned and complained about how our O sucked with Hartline and then his light came on and everyone loved our 2nd ranked O in the SEC and bitched about the D.

    If you want to be competitive in the SEC you do not go for broke on the O side of the ball, but on the D side of the ball. LSU and Bama win on their D. Urban won at UF with a QB that throws for Sh*t. Only UF while Spurrier was there a Decade ago had a High Octane O that everyone clamors for, but guess what he also had one of the nations leading Ds.
    Offence might win a few games, but Defense wins Championships.

    While I admit it looked like Joker was losing the team and possibly his job after the Vandy game, they played with the heart and determination that I wanted the whole year the last few games. Will Joker turn it around, only time will tell? If we change HCs anytime soon, I want a coach with a strong Defensive Mind more than a strong Offensive Mind.

    Hal Dumme ruined this fan base.

    Most folks who are falling all over Leach's jock don't understand football.

    If you want to win a conference title (should be our goal) in the sec you have to have balance. Name a team who threw it more than 65% or ran it more than 65% that has won the sec in the last 15 years?

    I am convinced we have the RIGHT SCHEME. I'm not convinced we have the right guy calling the plays.

    We only lose one receiver off of this team. We return a pretty good qb in maxwell smith and have a lot of young receivers who will see the field next year. We should see a jump on offense.

    Defense doesn't worry me as much as others. Yes we lose trevethan and guy. But we have addition by subtraction with Burden and Mosely and Brown being gone. We also return virtually every d-linemen.

    This is in running for the worst post since the merger. We lost some games we should have won. We lost some games badly that we should have lost much closer. Doesn't mean it affects this win at all. 26 years in the making. I was there I was on the field. The streak is over. Anything else doesn't matter right now. Until next year, we beat UT and I am happy.

    Not really. 2007 was Randy's only really good year. I can tell you we tailgated with some folks from Knoxville and they can't believe he is still a D-1 offensive coordinator. This year we average 9 points in our last three games and 11.5 (I think) against BCS competition.

    Agree...I think the scheme is sound it just takes very good QB play. Not sure that my point got across, but oh well. The only point of comparing 07 to 11 is to point out that it's NOT the scheme.

    2006, 2007 and 2010 good years on offense.

    2008, 2009 and 2011 bad years on offense.

    Just for fun, Wasn't that vandy team that beat us beat by UT? So, UT isn't as bad as you say bc they, UT, used the same QB and team to beat Vandy. This team came out and flat whooped some tail this last saturday. I don't care what happened in week one or 2 or 3. I'm not a Card fan, but looks like their team was a little better than all of us thought, huh? They beat some realy fricking good teams this year. We didn't have the season i was expecting, but hey, we didn't know what to expect this year, whole new offense and a new DC. Things don't happen over night people, you have to build and earn it. I expect a lot of improvement next season and to start another long bowl streak. Go Cats!!

So, the system does NOT consistently work. We have had one really good year, 2007 ranked 15th and one reasonable year 2010 ranked 30th. We have had 3 TERRIBLE years out of the last four, 87th, 97th, and 118th. That is unacceptable be any standard. Please don't tell me you can argue otherwise. One time in the last 4 years we have ranked in the Top 30 in offense. Three times in the last four years we have ranked 87th or below. Sounds to me like a scheme that is failing. Implement a scheme that fits our talent. Let's please stop brining up 2007. It hasn't happened again since and probably won't anytime soon if we continue to line up in a pro set against pro players on the opposition. Let's spread them out and work the entire field with both passing and running. Luckily, Towles would be the perfect fit for a balance spread attack.

    I can argue that it's clearly talent. That's the difference from each year.

    The issue with our team this year was that the last 2/3 years of Brooks' tenure were MISERABLE recruiting wise in terms of DB's and receivers. MISERABLE...

    It is not the scheme.

    People in love with the spread don't understand football.

    We would be worse off in the spread this year because we don't have the receivers. Hell, we spread the field as much as anyone when we have the depth at receiver. We spent all of last season in 3 and 4 wide receiver looks.

    We're not a two back offense. Haven't been since Joker took over. Yes we have a fullback but even when we had Connor we were mostly a one back, 3 wide offense.

We did play against some really good defenses, but you throw in WKU, 1-aa team, a bad UL team and that skews things back the other way. Ole Miss weren't world beaters on defense either in 2010 either.

  • USA100: ^We also had those cream puffs in the 2007...Eastern, Norfolk St (I think we played them in 07), etc....Sorry, but anyone trying to argue that our 2010 offense wasn't all that great is ignoring the facts.

    2006 a decent offense, but got really good post-LSU 49-0 drubbing.

    2007 - obviously one of the better overall offenses we've had, maybe ever

    2008 - a struggle, but a solid Defense helped us to bowl eligibility

    2009 - Offense wasn't great, but was solid with Cobb in the Wildcobb....and Locke

    2010 - On par, statistically, with 2007 offense. Better than the 2006 offfense.

    2011 - really bad. As bad as, if not worse, than 2008.

    2012 - Minus Roark, all skill guys will be back.....I think we'll see an improvement next year.

    I think the debate is about whether or not this offensive scheme is the issue...whether Sanders is the issue...or whether we have the talent required to make the scheme work.

    All sides have been argued:

    "Bring in Leach!"
    "Bring in a new OC!"
    "Bring on Towles!"

    2007 proved, one could argue, that the scheme is sound and the coaching is sound...now compare the talent and you see the difference.

    OK, I guess we all have different oppinions about what is really good. In 2009, we were ranked 87th out of 120. That is not good. I acknowledged 2010 was a good year, but great it was not. We ranked 30th in total offense and tied for 35th in scoring offense. Is that good? Yes. Is that great? No.

    I am not trying to prove anybody right or wrong, but I think we have to have higher expectations. I would think most schools who want to compete would make an offensive change when they have finished in the in the bottom third of all D-1 schools in total offense 3 out of 4 years. Especially when they just completed the season in the bottom 2% of all division 1 offenses. Great schemes flat out don't drop to the bottom third 3 out of 4 years and in the bottom 2% any year.

  • We also ranked 19th nationally running the ball in 2009. Now consider this; our starting QB went down to injury. We throw in a true freshman in Morgan Newton who cannot make reads and accurately throw past 15 yards. Every DC in the conference knew this and we were still able to run the ball. Saying we ranked 87 out of 120 doesn't tell the whole story. Our coaches know how to run an offense. Complain about play calling all you want. But the argument that our woes are due to scheme are extremely misguided.

  • I don't care what anyone says, I don't know how many coaching staff's would scrap their entire offensive scheme and start a wide receiver at QB. Let alone do it in 1 week, and win the game. To me, that was one hell of a coaching effort on Saturday.
