  • When will the final two pieces of this recruiting class fall into place? I am getting anxious.

  • It's been an unusual finish to this recruiting class. Ordinarily, things would be wrapped up by now. It's hard to say with Bennett, whose recruitment seemingly will go on forever. And some of the other guys Cal seems to have on "standby" are there, primarily, because of Bennett. They are being remarkably patient.

  • not sure why we haven't offered Mislav yet.

It's not like we are out of scholarship. If we can offer scholarship to walk-ons what's bad about offering a guy who has a good foundation to basketball. He doesn't have athleticism yet, but he can develop much, and he might be able to become key contributor off the bench in 3-4 years.

    Don't agree at all ...

It's one thing to offer a preferred walk-on a conditional year-to-year scholarship ... which you can rescind at any time and use if needed for someone else ...

... and another thing to offer a scholarship to a recruited athlete who would expect (along with others paying attention to the situation) to have a scholarship as long as he's here. You can't just take away that scholarship without it looking bad and being used negatively against you.

Besides, from all I've read, he's not going to be the answer to what we're looking for ... and I am not one to want to just add bodies for the sake of adding bodies.

    We have 7 scholarships with

    -Harrow
    -Noel
    -Goodwin
    -Poythress
    -Cauley-stein
    -Wiltjer
    -Hood

7 / 13.... We could use a practice bodies. He is 6'5", he has size. He has skill sets. He just lacks athleticism. I don't think he will do much next year, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we could use another body, and can be become very important player in 3-4 years down the road.

I understand your opinion ... just don't agree with it myself.

We used 11 regular scholarships last season and 1 preferred walk-on used a scholarship.

We already have 8 regular scholarships and 1 preferred walk-on using a scholarship for next year (you left Beckham off).

I still think we'll get 2 more from all the guys that are left uncommitted right now ... and just don't want another scholarship tied up with basically most of the top 10 players wanting to come here in '13 and '14. With the guys looking to come here in the next 2-3 years, he won't see the floor then either.

    Just my opinion ...

  • I thought Beckham was still a walk-on and got promoted to full scholarship.

Or is he consider a scholarship player now?

He did start out as a preferred walk-on, but I believe he's on regular scholarship now.

If you ad the Croatian right now that's 8, add two more with bennet and somebody else that's 10. Outside of Noel there is nobody on the roster that is sure fire to leave. If all 10 came back that's only 3 rides for what could be 6 top 15 players that want to come to UK.

I fulley expect Cal to leave himself 5 open scholarships for 2013's class. If Noel decides to return or if the nba changes the rule we've got to have 4 rides, at least for the 13 kids...

  • Wildmoon, he lacks the one thing that a perimeter player for Cal cannot lack. If he can't guard the perimeter then he won't see the court. Moreover, his lack of athleticism won't even help the team much as a practice player.

The kid has a chance to play somewhere. It would not be fair for Cal to bring him in knowing that the guy had little chance of ever playing for him.

  • What we need is a highly paid professional to keep track of all this and decide who to give these scholarships to. Then we could set back and enjoy our National Championship in peace, with the assurance that the future was in good hands.

Anybody know of a cracker jack basketball expert we could count on?

It is odd how Cal is referring publicly to maybe taking only 1 more guy. (I personally think it will be at least two, but he keeps telling people one.) If he's not careful, they're going to put him on that Hoarders reality show with a bunch of scholarships laying around. biggrin

There's little doubt, though, that he sees 2013 as a potential monster recruiting year, and if a guy isn't going to be a difference-maker, it's probably better to pocket the ride for next year.

Wait some of this is getting confusing here.

    Scholarship players for 2012-2013 season:
    1. Harrow 2. Goodwin 3. Hood 4. Poythress 5. Wiltjer 6. Noel 7. Cauley Stein 8. Beckham.

Add 2 more players in that class with Bennet and Lyons / Graham. You get 10 Scholarships for 2012-2013 season. That means 3 scholarship open for 2012-2013 season.

In 2013-2014 season, i will assume that Noel will go to draft. (if everyone else stays, what's the big deal, we will have insanely talented team that doesn't need much.)
    1. Harrow 2. Goodwin 3. Hood 4. Poythress 5. Wiltjer 6. Cauley-stein 7. Bennet 8. Graham

So 2013-2014 season will have either 6 scholarship or 5 scholarship (depends on whether we get Graham or Lyons) (beckham should have graduated)

Our best case scenario of ONLY noel going to draft leaves us with either 6 scholarship or 5 scholarship for 2013-2014 season, and that's assuming we do get Bennet and Lyons/Graham.

You guys are assuming the absolute optimistic situation. I just don't see that happening, especially one conflicting to what Coach Cal does, which is send players to NBA. I agree many will stay next year, but to say ONLY noel goes. Highly doubt it.

One thing that Miller created was the stability and flexibility for Coach Cal. That's one thing I loved about Miller. Wiltjer isn't as flexible so he is more dominantly focused on inside, while we have no versatility to support the back court. That's why having a 3-4 year player that will become able to play, I think, will be very helpful. Also, to UKcat15, I am not talking about major contribution here. I am talking about 5-10 minutes. I already commented on Mislave being wait and see approach.

This tear's class, right now is much more like the knight class. Add Bennett and you might have another 1 and done but we need 4 - 5 rides for 2013. Suppose graham qualifies and we get Bennett. If the nba rule changes we are in a pickle. I see 9-10 scholly players. IMO we take 2 more Max...

    hoptownukfan

  • Bennett got off to a late start on his recruitment that's why it's playing out so late.

I think UK will ultimately add two more players. Some combination of Bennett/Jefferson/Harrell/other and Lyons/Graham/Brzoja/other.

Hop, I enjoy how you get it when it comes to recruiting, it isn't always about the numbers and a full roster. If everyone would remember Pitino had no scholly for Mercer back in the nineties so he had to get Rodrick Rhodes to transfer. Cal won't put himself in that situation.

Wildmoon, I don't think CAL will ever have a complete roster, too many players to play and hard to keep them happy so it will never happen. So don't worry about 6 recruits for 2013.

    UKlaw82

  • To those who think only Noel will be one-and-done after next season ... bet ya my next paycheck that Poythress and Goodwin go too.
