Top Coaches... We Should Seriously Consider

  • Will someone plz explain to me what the big deal with Urbin Myer is? Yes he built up two or three programs on his why to the UF job, I will give you that. And he won a few national championships with Tebow. Sounds like I just came up with why he's a big deal huh. But this is how my mind works, he did all that with a TON of great staff around him, after his staff started taking jobs and left what happened to Myers team? They went down hill pretty fast.

So if Joker is going to stay our HC for a long time he needs to bring in a stronger staff than the Buddy ball we seem to be playing now, I hope Joker is the man to right this ship I really do, but I just don't see it happening with the staff he has around his/our team.

So let it rip how stupid I am not talking about Myers but I for one am no fan of his! Kirby Smart on the other hand I am a fan.

Btw I agree with a lot of yall about the Deer in the headlights, piss poor body language, and no enthusiasm. All that needs to change even if nothing else does! Go Big Blue

  • This is NOT an endorsement by any means... but what do you guys know about Skip Holtz? I understand he (Lou Jr.) is doing well as HC of South Florida... he may be an up and coming Coach to keep an eye on. I realize that many Cat fans are not big fans of Lou Sr., but could his son be ready for the big league soon (the SEC)?

  • First of all I think this was just a speculation thread in case Joker were to leave...So if that
be the case,I am still for Urban Meyer...Jeff,to refute your point,if Meyer were to take the job,and wins 9 games the first year and a nice bowl game, and then a huge bowl game the second year and is recruiting well, why would he want to leave? He knows at that point he might have another chance at a NC so why leave...? He has already won on the biggest stage at Fla so I have to disagree with your theory that he would pack up and leave if he had success..He was retired so it wasnt like no one knew where he was..He might really be up to the challenge and if we dont ask we will never know...I am not like most on here, believing that we will never be able to get a top name..

Next,if we dont ask Meyer, then the names I would like to see included would be Gary Patterson
Bud Foster and Brent Venables...These last two guys could be head coach and def co..All are tough competitors with much experience and I think they would do well..All of this is likely a moot point as I believe Joker is back unless he steps down on his own. I think Steve Brown still needs to go as does Randy Sanders..We need to bring in a young fiery OC and get Wes McGriff away from Vandy to coach the DB's and recruit....Wes and Mitch just need to kiss and make up for whatever happened the last time Wes was here..

Like Jawjacker and others have said on this thread,Joker needs to show some fire and passion and enthusiasm coming out on the field and on the sidelines..Way too laid back and this carries over to the team...GO CATS..

  • For whats its worth Mike Leech would be great he knows the sec as he was the oc and quarterbacks coach at uk under mummy and was a big influence on getting Tim Couch Not only can he coach he can recruit and he dont put up with loosing look at Texas tech before he took the job and what he did with it when he brought his players in. Fun to watch and very high scoring. Remember the Air Raid of the 90`s Every game was a nail biter and with a little defense the SEC would be a little un easy to see him at Kentucky.

Don, I agree... Urban Meyer would be my first choice. All I know is... we MUST aim higher. It's foolish to say we have no chance at some of these top notch coaches. By not at least trying, we are accepting mediocrity.... and will remain at the bottom of the SEC. Having said that, I really hope that Joker finds a way to turn it around... he can start by giving us a much better, much more exciting OC.

Yes, too laid back carries over on to the field and Joker is too laid back. But that is just the way he is very mellow. Papaw Brooks would light up everybody...except one or two assistants it seemed to me, on the field. coaches, officials, players.
Joker gets mad and upset never..at anybody.

secondly, Meyer would be a good choice as others, and it is a lie we wont be able to get a top coach now. The status quo crew, made of homers, company men and their buddies on here never want change.
They didnt want to change Ron Hudson, they were wrong. They didnt want to change Mike Archer and they were wrong. they didnt want to change Steve Brown, they were wrong. On and on. I think they are all the same ones and they never get on here and admit they were wrong. They just attack the fans who want a better program and try to blame the fans instead of the head honchos who deserve the responsibility.
Heck, they didnt even want to change BILLY G for goodness sake. They were stupidly wrong about that one. Look what we have now but they stubbornly kept their embarrasingly wrong opinion until Cal proved them wrong again.

The time IS not now; but when the time comes and I am afraid they way things are going-badly-they will wait too late to get any of the elite coaches that are out of a job because other programs with vision and clarity of thinking-all our SEC and other opponents will snap them up quickly when they need to upgrade and there we will be again.
"WE cant get a good coach to come to UK." Darn.chairshot

I'm very sorry guys but why would anyone think Meyer would come to UK?

    bigbluelife

  • I also like the thought of Kirby Smart; imo you have to have a good defense and build your team around that

    bigbluelife

  • Hire Urban Meyer as Coach and Bellichick as AD.

Leach does not know the SEC of today, he has not been in the SEC for 13 yrs and was only here 1-2 yrs. Next, he had no influence on Tim coming to UK as Tim was recruited by Curry not Dumme. As far as recruiting, he did fine in the hot bed of TX, but I would not consider him a very good recruiter. Also, most SEC DCs figured out the "Air Raid" and we did little in Dumme's last years. He would not have lasted even if Bassett had not got caught cheating.

We are not going to scrap Joker so the point is moot, but when a change happens and if it is in the next 4-5 years, I want Kirby Smart or Manny Diaz. Both are young and energetic, both are TOP recruiters, and both coach outstanding D. Have them bring in Neal Brown as OC and you have the makings of an outstanding staff.

I want Joker to excell as he will not bolt if he is sucessful.

  • Personaaly we are ahead of ourseves give Joker the chanc to do something after 4 years then get him out ,I satnd by him 110% he lives for UK & any other coach would leave like Petrino did at UL

    buffalos14

  • I like all three but you will never know until you ask them.
I REALLY THINK if that an opening happens, the thing that really excites me is Mitch is now capable of getting a guy that is top flite. SOMEBODY is out there, waiting and thinking about UK right now that is a terrific offensive coach that could turn it around quickly. If Mitch pulls it off and I believe he can, we will HAVE A FOOTBALL WINNER IN LEXINGTON.
When you see how Minter turned a passive, predictable defense into an aggressive, unpredictable unit in one year (the defensive backs have been sabotaged by Brown and that should improve the minute hes gone) you have to believe a competent OC could do the same thing. SS: "Kentucky used to have 1 or 2 (defensive) sets, now they are more unpredictable." Yes SC won but if we had an offense, we could have competed.
Urban Meyer: (paraphrased when Brooks was here) "Kentucky is pretty easy to defend and you know what to expect." Brooks ignored the quote and UF promptly pummelled us again.

prediction: Joker takes over the playcalling next game ( I know he called the offense with Brooks but anythig has got to be an improvement-he wont do it if he thinks he cant do better) We get a new OC next year to match Minter or surpass his expertise. Joker gets another year or two. And he will succeed because he had courage to make the needed change, recruiting improves with the whiz OC and we are off,

Alternative prediction: Joker the nice guy keep Sanders and refuses to make a change though the season tanks. Newton continues to be unable to pass, the OL is not able to execute, Joker refuses to take over the playcalling and we lose a lot more games as the defense wears out and the team completely collapses. the whole staff is fired at the end of the year and we start from scratch but Mitch finds a diamond in the rough with instant credibility and name recognition that gives the BBN new hope and he is off and running.

    We win both ways.

I don't think we should even be entertaining that question at this time.

HOWEVER, just speaking in general terms about the names you throw out... If UK were to EVER hire one of those guys and they had success, do you know how long it would take them to be out the door and on to their next pay raise? You wouldn't even have a chance to blink.

That's what it's important for UK to get things right with Joker. He represents long-term stability IF they can right this ship and bring in some more talent.

If they don't, you're looking at the same revolving door of fail that UK has experienced for decades.

Why couldn't we just keep them happy here? Pay them what they need, like Cal?

We have waited too long to give him 4 years and nobody else who is serious about football doesnt do that much anymore if they want success.

  • Look, I feel for Joker... I really wish he were "THE" man we can all count on and get behind. The fact is though... he was handed a "predetermined" HC job, that he was not ready for (especially, in the SEC). As much as I like Joker... desperate times call for desperate measures. The sense of URGENCY has been created... Mitch MUST make a CRITICAL move NOW. We need to show the world we are dead serious about UK Football... and go FULL THROTTLE after the VERY BEST COACH ALIVE!!! Make him the highest paid HC on the grid-iron.... WHATEVER IT TAKES!!! Just stop all the BS and GO FOR IT!!! It's time for Mitch and the UKAA to give BBN a football program we can ALL be proud of and excited about.

    GO CATS!!!

Btw... I feel better. I was due for another late night rant. biggrin

Yeah, it's obvious there are some who will remain loyal to Joker no matter what. The difference in them and those like myself is, we are loyal to Kentucky Football "first"... not the "coach". Those who really want to aim higher and want a program that can compete in the SEC, will root for what's best for "UK Football"... the others will root for a Coach who can't get it done, simply because they "like" him. SMDH.

I like Joker too... but I "Love" UK Football and I WANT BETTER!!!
