Top Coaches... We Should Seriously Consider

  • Well said.
Being a Kentucky guy, I still like Joker but I love the football team and I want the football team to succeed more than I have loyalty to a HC that will not listen to fans concerns.

Some may disagree, but I think you and I are in the majority here.

  • I'm right there with UKfit & Jaw. I like Joker but I love UK. I want what's best for this program and if Joker gets the ax so be it.

    Whitaker568

  • I don't think you guys are out of the vast majority. Probably 99% of fans have loyalty to the program over the coach.

    tWhit

  • Yes I want Joker to succeed because if he does its better for the program. That being said every "if" scenario I have said if they fire Joker I will support the next guy just as much.

  • If our biggest problem is a lack of knowledgeable coaches, then Pease from Boise State. If our problem is mainly recruiting, then a BIG retired name with strong NFL ties, a la Bill Parcells. Someone who would do it to show off at the end of his career.

    poliglotcat

  • Guess when you get down to the nitty gritty the biggest problem is recruiting.
Kind of like UK BB. Our talent is going to beat your redshirt seniors.
But the real bottom line is this: THE HEAD COACH MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
a HC like The Tuna is all you need to get the 5 stars.
    Overnight.
So we have to wait on Joker but he aint gonna bring in the 5 stars and that is because THE HEAD COACH............!

Hey dude... I read your mind there and finished that last sentence. I filled in the blank and I don't appreciate that kind of disrespect. That kind of language, ridiculing and personal attacks against our HC will NOT BE TOLERATED! I suggest you clean up your act there ukfit... the CP bouncers will have your butt tossed right out of here. biggrin

  • I would really love to see a huge name coach come here just to see if it is true that they would get 5 star players overnight. To really see what kind of impact a guy like Meyer would have on our recruiting. Surely it would improve, but how much? Would Meyer struggle having the minimal resources that UK will give him? I am not entirely convinced it'd be that easy. UK's recruiting problems and disadvantages are a real drag... in more way than one.

    Comebakatz

  • A Meyer level coach may come but he would probably talk to Brooks and no doubt would have a contractural stipulation on facilities as well as salary as a prereq.
Maybe overnight is a slight stretch but they will come, make no mistake about it. And they will come fast.

I am willing to wager the same ones who want Joker to stay are the same ones who pined for Curry to stay.
Curry was a decent but misdirected coach who did not have a clue.
Joker is in the same mold, but this time we are not going to give him 6 years.
    What happens if Joker resigns.

    ukfit

  • I am one of those people who want Joker to stay and you are completely wrong about the Curry comment. Hell I didnt give a damn about UK football when Curry was here. As a kid I was a FSU fan. So you lost on that one. If Joker resigns or is fired then I want the best for UK football whether that is a Meyer type or that is someone up and coming. Either way I want someone who wants to be here. I want Joker to succeed but if he doesnt by next year then I want him gone. Matter of fact I havent seen one person say they want Joker on board no matter what. I suppose it all depends on your definition of "wanting Joker to stay".

  • Urban Meyer could win 6-7 games easily with what we've got now.

Everyone was ready for Curry to move on. I never wanted him in the first place. He had excellent teams at Georgia Tech, had so-so teams at Bama and refused to accept that the "Tom Osborne Offense" would not work in the SEC. Before fixating on the Option, Curry had Tommy Bowden as OC and in 1990 led us to out first upper division SEC finish since 1984 when we finished ranked #19 and Claiborne was our coach.

You guys wanting a big name coach might want to remember the name Bill Curry though. He was a big name coach before he can here.

Sorry, after this latest embarrassment and the obvious change of heart some "previous" Joker supporters are displaying... I felt the need to do a bump. (not of coke) biggrin

I still don't see a great replacement. People are saying not to Mike Leach. He seems like the best bet but some don't see it and most say Mitch won't hire him assuming Mitch doesn't go out with Joker.

Wonder if Kirby Smart or John Chavis would take the job. Both those guys know the kind of formula it takes to win in this league.

    tWhit

  • I would love to see Joker succeed. But face the facts, he has been the recruiting coordinator and brought all the talent you see before us for the past 4 years. He was the HCIW for years and that so called "smooth" transition has proven to be a failure. He has brought these assistant coaches in and they have failed. Sorry Joker, but lets called a spade a spade and look for what is best for the program. I would like to see Parcels come in and do the job but I highly doubt he would even consider it. Leach? Well Leach could be a possibility but he has had is fair share of problems and do you really want his baggage? Plus, he has had a few good season at TT but do you think he will be able to hold up in the SEC year in and year out? So now you go to the lower profile coaches, which we have been down this road before i.e. Morris, Brooks, and Joker. I would look at guys like John Chavis, or Kirby Smart. What about the Oregon's O-coordinator? I think it is Mark Helfrich. I think coaches like that will be our best options.

  • Well after the Vandy nightmare,I think Joker is on his last legs..Ga will flat out kill us and there wont be 25,000 there for the UT game..He might do the decent thing and resign..Regardless,he needs to be gone...If Mitch doesnt hire Meyer, then Bud Foster ought to be given serious consideration..Great defensive coach and no doubt he would bring in bright coaches to fill out the staff..He could be head coach and Def co. as I mentioned earlier..He is from Ky...A friend of mine knows him personally and was told a while back that Bud would like to have this job if it ever came open..I am talking about 2 yrs ago..Well,I guess we hang on and see how the last two weeks go..Mitch has to make a move..Joker will be a lame duck next year and will not be able to recruit..No one will want to play for this staff if they feel they wont be around another year..Coaches wont come either so we would be stuck with the entire group..Lets hope the higher ups wake up and make it happen..

  • Wish UK would make a run at Troy Calhoun. But probably too late....Several people have endorsed him for the Arizona job.

Very intelligent coach with NFL experience as an Offensive Coordinator.

    Panama

  • Panama ,I read a bio on him several years ago when we hired Brooks..I was impressed. He could well be a good choice also..Hope Mitch is making the calls already..

Yea he needs a temporary gig and some head coaching experience before he moves back to Blacksberg to takeover Beemer's place in a few years when he retires

  • Well Deeeefense, may he would take the job and stay, but I can see you are one of the guys that says just dont ask them because you know they arent coming...Sorry but i dont look at things like that..Bud is from Ky..If he took the job and started doing very well, maybe he wouldnt want to go back..You dont know that nor do I..But I am one that is willing to take the chance and ask him if he is interested in this job..We have nothing to lose..There are so many that post on many boards that think their word is gospel if they disagree with what is posted..Ex: and this is from many fans several years ago..."Cal would never come here,he has it made at Memphis"....How did that work out? To our advantage I would say..That is just an example so dont start any football to basketball comparisons...It's the fans on these boards that I was pointing to..

I just don't understand Smart and Foster over Fedora or Sumlin. Fedora was a coordinator at UF and Oklahoma State. He has proven he can lead a program as a head coach. Sumlin was an OC in the Big 12 and is undefeated this season as a head coach. Coordinators are sometimes successful and sometimes not. Why not take a young coach that was a great coordinator at great programs that has proved he can be a very good head coach over the young hot shot coordinator that has yet to prove he can be the head man?

    usa1000

  • The reason I go with Smart and Foster is I prefer D. I really and truly dont know anything about Fedora so I cant comment. With Sumlin he has only been a head guy a few years with a school that plays in a sub par conference. In which he hasnt won 10 games until this year. Last year he had a losing record. Also he has one of the best QB's in college football. People use the Peterson arguement that he wouldnt give us a recruiting advantage anywhere but Sumlin doesnt open up much either. I know Texas and all that but a lot of those kids just wanna play football in Texas. When they get snubbed by the big boys it puts a chip on their shoulder.

Foster has been on the biggest stage and has succeeded. There really isnt anything he hasnt seen. I know its not the same as being the head man but I would rather have a guy that has been on the big stage. Add to it the fact that he is a KY guy and that pushes him over the edge. Smart well his record is just flat out great and there is a reason he is the highest paid coordinator on Bama's staff.
