Top Coaches... We Should Seriously Consider

  • I think Fedora might be a good choice..He has a very good background and has been a head coach for a while..

  • Up front, I don't believe Joker will be fired and think coaches should be given time to build. That's wise. However, I think a coach has to know when to make a change and admit they need help. I haven't seen that he can do that, so it worries me for him. I do like him and was really excited to see him get the job.

-He needs an offense. Bottom line. This offense worked the best it will work in the SEC one year, 2007.
-Thinking with the current facilities and UK's recent history that they are somehow going to begin landing or consistently land multiple 4-5 star recruits is absolute fantasy.
-Thinking with the current facilities and UK's recent history that they are somehow going to begin landing an Urban Meyer or anyone who has already proven themselves at the highest level is also a fantasy.
-Thinking with the current facilities and UK's recent history that they are somehow going to fool anyone again with promises of upgrades may also be a fantasy, regardless of Barnhart's fight to get them.
-Thinking UK is ever going to have those facilities when most of the fans aren't able to swallow a gradual ticket increase that would get them into real competition with the likes of UF, UT, and UG, etc., is also a fantasy.

The only guaranteed way this gets better for UK is that they improve the facilities immediately. Even if they have to divert money from the basketball program for a little while, they need to do this or they will drop into a position they will never climb out of. The money people lied their way into this mess with the promise of a recruiting facility that turned into a shovel of dirt and no more.

If they don't get that done, Joker would need to be Jesus to matter in the SEC.

Given that the program gets what they need and have long deserved for funding every sport under the sun and then some, I think some good things are possible.

I would love to see Neal Brown come back to UK as OC. Get it done yesterday, imo. Great suggestion. Take that load out of Sanders and Phillips hands. I like what Minter has begun to do, though he takes risks sometimes that do not seem to have enough potential benefits. Next year is a rebuilding year for the defense, as they try to fill some big shoes.

Offense gets you on TV. Getting on TV gets you noticed by recruits, offensive and defensive. Defense gets you victories. Maximizing and showcasing the talent you do get, gets you victories you wouldn't otherwise, which in turn get you better recruits.

  • The Packers' offensive coordinator is a candidate for the Tulane job. Why not UK? Have you freaking seen their offense?

  • yeah I was kind of shocked by that. Honestly if we get a new QB coach I want Trent Dilfer. Noone shows more passion for the game and the dude flat out knows football. I know he hasnt coached but I loved what he was doing with the Elite 11.

I like Sumlin and Harbaugh, but I'm leaning more toward Butch Jones if Meyer turns us down.

Top 10 young coaches in college football - USATODAY.com

The hottest name among college football coaches is probably Houston's Kevin Sumlin, 35. His Cougars went 18-9 in his first two years, including the program's first bowl victory in 28 years in 2008. Last year, Houston went 10-4, beating Texas Tech...

  • Mike Leach is nothing like BCG, Mitch will not hire him because of his choice, IMO Leach would turn us around quickly. Mitch is going to lose for another year, he wants to prove a point. Leach is will get a good job this time next year we all be wonerding why we didnt get him.

    OptimusBlue5716

  • I wont be wondering, personally I disagree with you. I dont want Leach. I would much rather have Chris Peterson.

  • Don't think Buzz is going anywhere. Maybe Jon Gruden wants a new gig.

Also, I don't believe in a quick turnaround in football. My biggest problem with Joker is that everything is practically the same as it had been under CRB. So why are we experiencing a downturn...? I don't want to wait a year or two to make a change and be farther down in the ditch.

I agree with you. He was an OC at Florida and Oklahoma State. He has also had success as a head coach. He is 48 I think so he is seasoned. Sumlin would be a good choice too.

  • Why would Butch Jones leave Cincinnati to go to UK? Leave a school where he can win his conference and play in a BCS bowl or go be a bottom-feeder in the SEC.... hmm tough call

You do realize this article is a year old? Harbaugh isn't leaving the 49ers to coach at UK.

I hear Meyer's name a lot on here - tell me why he would go to UK, or a school like UK, where football isn't the top priority and will always play second fiddle to the basketball program?

Please. You ought to know by now that your school is like every other school in that conference, the minor leagues where every coach dreams of leaving for real football jobs in real football conferences. Yeah winning the Big East and playing in a BSC bowl sure is attractive, just ask Bobby Petrino/Rich Rodriguez/Randy Edsel/and your own Brian Kelly. He didnt even stick around to coach you in a damned BCS bowl, he was in such a hurry to get started at a real football program.

Why are browsing a Kentucky football forum is the better question. Nobody aspires to coach in the Big East. Your conference is about to go under. Might as well get out and go to a conference where the highlight of the game is not the commentator falling asleep. And don't be flattered. I don't want your coach.

  • Tell me the majority of HC's wouldn't leave their current job for ND? And yeah he left early because he had too, but yes that really looked bad.

But you never did answer "Why would he leave UC to go to UK?"

Why, because I am fan of college football. I will bet you that the Big East doesn't go under - but I will be honest and say I would love to see UC and UL join the ACC or Big 12.

  • Even if it doesn't go under (which remains to be seen), your conference is garbage. There isn't a single team in the Big East that could compete in the SEC.

I don't think he would - like I said he has a better chance at success at UC than at UK and with UC's basketball team not as good as it was under Huggins, he can continue making UC a football school.

  • Football school/Basketball school is overrated. We are a "basketball school" because that's where we've experienced success. If the football team showed some competence then the fans would show up in droves. There aren't enough seats for UK basketball fans, but there are for UK football fans. The opportunity exists.
