Top Coaches... We Should Seriously Consider

  • WildcatDawg22 said...

Football school/Basketball school is overrated. We are a "basketball school" because that's where we've experienced success. If the football team showed some competence then the fans would show up in droves. There aren't enough seats for UK basketball fans, but there are for UK football fans. The opportunity exists.

I agree, but not many D1 schools are good in both on a consistent basis and there is a reason for that. I would also say that the opportunity has existed for years now, but has never been achieved. Serious question - why do you think that is?

  • A combination of things. Wrong coach, probation, wrong administrators, geographic location and the link below to name a few.

  • IMO Jones would leave UC if the money was right and had a guaranteed contract. SEC gives him a opportunity to coach against the best and play the best. Coaches want to think they can do something that others can't and "prove" they belong with the best.

Enough money will make almost any coach listen but the issues at UK run much deeper.

  • that fine, Peterson will never come here, Leach will

    OptimusBlue5716

  • Think one thing is for certain, Leach would have the balls to come in here and fight whoever needed fighting to make sure football got its fair share. Barnhart, the Board of Trustees, the Ky Senate (still say that is a ludicrus blame by Butch Cassidy), he wouldnt care who he had to call out.

Can anyone imagine Joker Phillips tomorrow going to the press and pointing fingers at the BOT for not allowing UKAA to borrow for football facilities? Can anyone imagine several of the young candidates mentioned in this thread having the ego and confidence to do so right after they were hired here?

I don't think he would - like I said he has a better chance at success at UC than at UK and with UC's basketball team not as good as it was under Huggins, he can continue making UC a football school.

You are making a common mistake I see from UL fans - defining sucess that a college football coach wants. Do you really think it matters to a coach winning games in an awful conference noone respects? Do you really think it motivates them to take a team from an awful conference to a BSC bowl game, team that every commentator will trash and ask "why are they here?" "why does that terrible conference have to have a slot?".

You tell me, where did Brian Kelly have the better chance of winning more games - UC or Notre Dame? Going to BCS bowl games - UC or Notre Dame? UC in both cases, easily - so why'd he leave?

BTW he didn't "have" to leave UC and not coach that Sugar Bowl game - Urban Meyer was hired by Florida, but he stuck around and coached Utah in its BCS bowl appearance.

  • What's the purpose of this thread, MB announced weeks ago that Coach Phillips is not on the 'hot' seat and not going anywhere. MB has several times that Coach Phillips will get a fair shot to right the ship.

You're right... what the hell are we thinking? headslap

You're killing me. First, I read in another post where you TELL us to "STOP" talking about Leach... now it's, apparently, up to you to judge whether or not a thread has "purpose".

Judging by your avatar, I really hope like hell we aren't making you angry... we won't like you when you're angry, huh?

  • KYBALLCOACH, no matter what Joker will not be the coach this time next year, either he will be fired at the end of this year or half way thru the season next year

    OptimusBlue5716

  • KyBallCoach caused some consternation over at HOB..Caused the thread to be closed..Methinks something going on....But you are correct Optimus,I truly think he will be
gone at the end of this season..What do you think will happen tomorrow? And we are playing at GA.. Does Little Big Horn come to mind ? It will be a slaugter like that..Hopefully Richt will be gracious..This football program needs a brand new infusion of new blood and
people that actually "get it"...We shall see..

  • How about this blast from the past? Why not go after Terry Bowden, who is in his third year at North Alabama and doing really well? Ask him to hire his brother, Tommy, as a coordinator. That would be some recruiting power.

  • I still think we call Urban Meyer first... then, Chris Petersen. After those two, there are many ways to go. I just prefer it be a proven HC.... not an up and comer (like an OC or DC)

I agree with most of that but there are a few up and comers that IMHO would good hires. Mario Cristobal is one. I'm a really big fan of him and IMO it's just a matter of time before he lands a "Big" offer.

I said the same thing about Manny Diaz when he was at MTSU. I preached about him for two years on TCP before he became a household name! Cristobal is a young Meyer type coach! In 3-4 years everyone will be on that Bus.

A coach that's not a up and comer but yet rarely gets a mention is Frank Solich at Ohio. The guy can coach IMO.

    Whitaker568

  • Solich is good at a midmajor school. I dont want him on the big stage of the SEC. Also it appears Urban Meyer may be off the board, and going to tOSU. Ive also heard Greg Schiano is under consideration for the PSU job.

"Solich compiled a 58–19 record (.753) at Nebraska." and played in the 2001 NC game. The guy was fired after a 9-3 season. Solich my not be a home run hire but the guy can coach IMO.

Schiano would be a good fit at PSU.

He is also 66 years old. Doesn't seem to be want we need again. If you don't like Leach or Rich Rod then go after a strong young coach like Sumlin, Fedora, Hugh Freeze or even Paul Rhoads. Or, if we really want to make a splash, try to hire a guy like D'Antonio and offer him twice what Michigan State is paying him. He wins games. Petersen would be awesome. Offer him twice what he is making now. But a 66 year old coach is not the answer.
