Towles- Butch Jones connection

  • I think this is the main reason Butch Jones would consider becoming the next HC at UK. If you look at what he was able to do at Central Michigan. His back up QB and undersized WR (Now replacing Ward for the Steelers) lit Brooks Cats up. A kid like Towles only comes around once in a coaches career.

  • Towles will probably go into the spring behind Whitlow and Smith on the depth chart. I'd say whoever the new coach is will have alot to say about it, based on what type offense he runs, but, even if the next coach opts for a pocket passer moreso than a scrambling, more mobile type QB, Smith and Towles are basically the same type players, but, imo, Smith has a little stronger and more accurate arm, especially on the deep routes. Towles probably has a little better leadership qualities and plays with a little more confidence and swagger and that may well carry him over Smith, but, if even if it does, it'll be extremely close..

The reason it looks like smith has the stronger arm is because he is more confident in where he is throwing it. Patrick has a major league arm. Once he understands how to read a defense and go through his projections he will be very very good.

IMO we should look to redshirt towles next year regardless.

I wouldn't say Smith has a stronger arm, he definitively has a more accurate arm due to better overall mechanics. Depending on what the next coach brings for offense, I would believe Whitlow will move to another position. Towles needs a lot of work on his overall mechanics in the passing game.

    Why so serious?

If Towles' family was seriously considering suggesting him to transfer if he didn't get the chance to play this year, I can't imagine they would be in favor of a redshirt season. I know you can say that he will have to sit out a year if he redshirts, but I think this will get interesting with whoever is hired in here.

Lets say Towles agrees to be redshirted and that happens. To me, you are essentially telling Towles that he will not see the field, barring injury, before his junior year. I just don't see that sitting well with him or his family. And he does listen to his family. I think whoever the new coach may be, they will have to make a decision by the end of spring practice on which QB they want to lead them over the next few years. And if it is Smith, I believe you will see Towles transfer out of here.

  • Possibly Towles has a better arm than what I've witnessed, but, it isn't near as strong as Smiths, especially on the deep ball..Smith's ball has a perfect spiral and is effortless, whereas, Towles ball wobbles and floats a little too much, imo..I like his touch, but, with the speed of SEC Corners & Safetys, he'll have to take some air off those longer passes and zip it a bit more.. On the flipside, I think Towles mobility is superior and that could make a difference on who plays and who doesn't.. Whitlow may have the strongest arm of the 3, just not quite as accurate and isn't quite as skilled in the pocket..

  • Jones recruited Towles pretty hard and told him they wanted him because he can make all the throws necessary in their offense. Jones would be great for Towles. They know each other pretty well.

  • Whitlow overall looked way better than PT Saturday. If someone RSes next year, has to be PT. Whitlow offers a different look that could be helpful at times.
