Training camp roster additions (Sprouse, Harmon, et al)

  • The camp roster always has some names of walk-ons that have joined the team. I don't know much about these guys right now but these are the names I don't recognize:

**Jeff Witthuhn (QB; 6-3, 235, Bowling Green, KY)
**Cody Lewis (DB; 6-0, 185, Alcoa, TN)
**Austin Sheehan (WR; 5-9, 170, Ft. Thomas, KY)
**Latrell Wilson (WR; 6-1, 205, Somerset, KY)
**Maurice Hall (LB; 5-11, 208, Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
**Damon Sprouse (OL; 6-5, 255, Atlanta)
**Zane Williams (DL; 6-4, 280, Lexington, KY)
    **J.D. Harmon (DB; 6-2, 197, Paducah, KY)

All are freshmen except for Hall, who came from JUCO ball at Arkansas Baptist

  • Maurice Hall and JD Harmon both look to be very well put ttogether from the pics you posted. Wonder if they've got a shot at any PT?

Joker talked about Harmon today and said the veterans have been high on him this summer. That said, I never count on a walk-on to get on the field, especially early. If they eventually do (Conner, Williams, etc.) then you know they're pretty talented guys.

Austin Sheehan is the teammate of Towles who was coming with him right? Had a scholarship offer from Cincy if I believe right. And Sprouse I think it is a big addition, 3* OL and Lewis has been mentioned before correct? I don't remember specifics though

  • Wow Sprouse was a 3 star OL by Rivals, Scout and ESPN and had an offer from UL apparently. Helluva walkon pickup!

  • Damon Sprouse would of been tied for 12th best recruit in last years class according to ESPN.

Why did he walk-on at UK? Does anyone know? Sounds like he had offers?

Sounds like Sprouse would be a good topic for a coach interview.

  • Sprouse, Harmon, Wilson, Sheehan, and Lewis (gotta love those Alcoa kids) all are very good walk ons for us more talent than usual

Agreed. How in the world did he get on campus? Definitely not complaining.

They can only invite so many kids to the pre school year camp. Once school starts they will fill out the scout team with quite a few others.]
    He may show up then.

  • Can't believe UK got Sprouse to walk-on. Hope the kid can hang in. There was a lot of buzz about McKinley this summer. But, as Matt said, it's hard to expect a FR WO to do much.

  • I played footballfo Jeff Witthuhn at Greenwood, he is very strong, I remember his bench press being close to 350 ( I heard a rumor it was near 400 or higher during senior year) during the spring of his Junior year. Kid is very strong, played as a starting QB in 6A and 5A, didn't have receivers at his high school at all, and the team likes to run, but don't be surprised to see him move to TE or defense, played LB and TE in high school as well, and is a load to bring down. He is a good kid who will push starters and others to become better.

Yep, they're allowed to bring in 105 for fall camp. So there are at least 20 walk-ons in camp every August (may be a few more if you aren't using all 85 rides.

Like Matt, I never expect for walk-ons to play, but when you're hurting for depth, it's not out of the realm of possibility. There was some buzz from players on Twitter about McKinley this summer, so glad to read from Matt that he is one of the walk-ons who has a spot in camp. Never know when you may luck into another contributor.

IMO, a quality walk-on program is a more important at UK than other SEC schools. UK has to do a bit more "projecting" and taking kids who may or may not develop into players who can play in the SEC. So it is a boost when UK can get quality prospects as walk-ons and let them develop. Just as some kids were evaluated as being able to play at this level and just don't develop, other kids are evaluated as not quite being good enough, but end up developing into a player who can contribute. UK has had some solid contributors take that road: John Conner, Mikie Benton, Melillo, McDermott, Coshik, etc.

  • Hall looks like a player.

  • I like the fact that the staff didn't stop recruiting after the class was full and signed. Looks like they went out and made a point to find other good bodies to help. Getting a 3 star Olineman, Cantrell McKinley(who apparently works his ass off and the player are high on), JD Harmon and some other kids that look like they can play is nice regardless whether they end up on the two deep or not.

He moves well and stays with his blocks. Ugly stance though. Looked like he was in a 4 point. They will have to work on that.

I saw Witthuhn play against a very good Bowling Green team last fall, and he is indeed a load. I had not heard his name before, and Witthuhn clearly stood out carrying the football, just very strong. I would also expect him to move to TE (maybe even FB?).

Perhaps he looked at our OL roster & decided there was more opportunity than at other BCS schools that would give him a scholarship? We're not particularly deep/talented/experienced there IMO.

Well one thing is for sure, It shows this staff can recruit. That makes six quality O-linemen in the class. biggrin

We wouldn't be in the shape we're in there had they recruited sufficient OLmen the previous two seasons.
