Tubby/Minnesota at Rupp?

  • Heard Chip Cosby talking about this on the radio this morning: why doesn't Cal/UK bring Tubby Smith back to Rupp Arena for a home and home with Minnesota?

There's not downside to this whatsoever.

    1. You bring Tubby back to Rupp to give him the welcome he deserves and helps to smooth over some of the bad feelings from his departure. Win.

    2. Minnesota isn't all that strong so it's not like they're going to take one off of UK in Lexington or in Minnesota. Win.

    3. Another "marquee" opponent on the home slate. Win.

    4. Also, Cosby said Minnesota was interested in opening their new building with UK in 2016 I believe. Win.

    What do you guys think?

  • I think it would be great. He needs to be honored and have people know they appreciated his work here and contributions to that 1998 title. thumbsup

  • Its really a no brainer. It would also be nice to put his name in the rafters to go with the other coaches that won an NCAA championship. If Pitino is up there, then Tubby should be as well.

How could anyone possibly disagree with that idea? Well... unless they are a Minnesota fan. lol

agree wholeheartedly. Bring Tubby back, raise his name in the rafters and there would probably be some tears shed. Guy truly was a class act. A fantastic idea

  • "Marquee" opponent? Really? Minnesota is almost the very definition of mediocre, uninspiring and mundane in terms of being a basketball opponent. The other points are valid, but not that one.

I guess having Tubby back to get a welcome might be a good idea, but I'd rather do it once he retires and can do the "Y" and be honored rather than in a game where either UK or he must lose.

Would you rather play Samford and Gardner Webb?

    Keepin in fresh since 1986.

  • I would love to see OTS come back, but if the 1% of our fan base who are totally clueless are going to make us all look stupid, then I say dont do it. There are tons of people that I know who think Tubby was worse than Clyde. How a rational person could think that is beyond me, but we are not dealing with rational people.

You must hang out with some weird people. I don't know a person who thinks tubby was worse than BCG...

In terms of the game... I don't have a problem with it. it would be nice to play a decent team on the road and have a decent non-traditional home game in rupp.

  • All you have to do is read some other boards and see the hatred that people spew anytime Tubby's name comes up. There are people who say that it was Tubbys fault that Clyde failed. Said he cupboard was too bare. As much as I hate to say it, there are some people who just like to hate Tubby.

At least they're from a big six conference.

Better than Stony Brook, Radford, Ouachita Baptist, Arkansas Pine Bluff, et al. Especially when you factor in bringing back Tubby.

The cupboard wasn't all that bare when Clyde took over plus he was able to land Patterson. If it wasn't for injuries his first year we would have been a Sweet 16 team at least.

I'm clueless to why people keep using the word "clueless" when they don't say what people are clueless about.

  • Clyde was awful. If he coached this years UK team they would have lost in the 2nd round. He was and still is an idiot.

As for "clueless" some of our fans are clueless as it relates to what Tubby did for UK and how a guy who is a good coach and a good guy should be treated by the fan base.

The pressure got to him. He's a much better coach that he showed while he was here.

It's not as much about BCG being a bad coach. At this point, it's pretty clear that he's just a terrible leader of young men.

Something like 6 of his 10 freshman from last season have transferred from Texas Tech.

  • I don't mind having him back but home and home, no. There are better schools that we could get to play for neutral home and neutral home. Plus most of Rupp's crowd would respect Tubby coming back, the main idiots are on the internet. lol

After watching him beat ul in Rupp Arena, I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly. After watching him at UK, he was bad when it came to subbing in players in and out. I would have given him a D- during his time here and an F in player interaction.

I think the bottle might be playing a large role. Until he goes to rehab and starts attending meetings his behavior will be erratic. I really don't think it has anything to do with his abilities to lead and coach. Tech really screwed themselves hiring a drunk.
