UK Towers coming down?

  • Anyone have a freshman headed to UK in the fall? I was told by a parent that her campus guide mention a Master Plan that involved Demolition of both Kirwin and Blanding towers to make room for New dorms. Not really part of the bonding drain IMO as these will most likley be built and run by a private property managment company. That appears to be the new trend in campus housing

Not sure if it involves the towers, but the way I heard it explained, the plan was to get financing by having it privatized for X number of years, then control goes over to UK once the money has been recouped. Interesting strategy. Sounds like win-win.

  • I was in the penthouse sweet of Kirwin Tower (22nd floor). We had some great times there for sure. Hate to see it go, but it was built in the 60s and our a little out dated. But before they go, they need to do something to Haggin Hall. That place is a dump.

  • I noticed that there are new dorms being built by Greg Page Apartments; looked pretty awesome.

  • Rm 1914 Kirwan Tower checking in...

17 yr old kid from NJ that hadn't stepped foot on campus in '87, called it home....

Not fun when drunk morons pulled fire alarms in January at 4 in the morning. One major reason I joined a 6-pack fraternity.

  • Kirwan Tower #309 checking in!

Stayed in Blanding Tower when I took my son to Father Son camp last year...UK needs new dorms! Most miserbale night I have spent away EVER! I have slept on hay wagons that were more comfortable than those beds.

  • The current plan is to tear down about 90% of the overall campus housing which includes the entire Kirwin/Blanding complex. They have signed a long term lease agreement with a private company that will build and manage the new facilities for a set rate.

The first new facility is already under construction on the old field next to Holmes Hall. Once that is complete, Holmes is coming down. There seems to be a strong push toward North campus for the new student housing that will be constructed. There was a study released by a firm just a couple of weeks ago that I haven't had a chance to read yet that was sponsored by a multitude of local interests here in Lexington.

  • When I got to UK in the fall of 2000, it may have been Jewell Hall that still didn't have A/C. It does now, but still it was the year 2000.

According to this article, the field in front of Haggin Hall is where a new dorm is being built.

Spent two years in Greg Page apartments haha. I haven't seen those. I'll have to drive over and check them out.

As for UK's dorms, I'm pretty sure they're consistently rated some of the worst in the country.

UK has definitely made strides in that area but places like Haggin and Jewel are beyond in need of replacing.

  • I really hope they reuse the name of Greg Page for the new facility. He deserves to still be honored for his contribution to the integration of SEC Football and his tragic death imho.

I believe you're referring to the field by Haggin Hall, not Holmes Hall. Construction is already underway on that field. It's a shame. I enjoyed many a night of ultimate frisbee, wiffle ball and general tomfoolery on that field.

  • I was excited to see that UK was getting new dorms, but was pissed it was going to be in that field. I played a lot of good softball and flag football there. Great freaking times!

  • I lived on the 19th floor of Kirwan in the early 70's for less than a week before moving off campus. Bricks were falling out of the building even back then.

  • Brand new when I lived there '67-'70. Now g-daughter will live there this Fall.

  • UK's dorms are truly outdated, but they are not nearly as outdated as the ones I stayed in while attending the University of Chicago. It's amazing that that place is one of the top ten universities in the world and it is a pile of rubble. It seems like they want it to stay that way for some nostalgic reasons. It is an academic prison if you ask me. Very uncomfortable place. The faculty that was there while I attended were great. That made it tolerable. The campus is smack dab in the middle of the ghetto.

I spent 5 years at Greg Page. I'm glad I got to stay there, only had to share a bathroom with 3 other guys (a couple of semesters only two others). A lot of good times over there, but was always the DD, just ask princeuk21. Still own you at basketball, Mattingly!!! haha.

  • "Dorms" and "comfortable"- now those are two words I never heard in the same sentence 30 years ago. I heard dorms and sardines, dorms and dull, dorms and wards, but never comfortable without an "un" in front of it. The idea was housing with convenience and lowest cost maintenance.
