UK & WKU in Nashville

  • How many of you are now committed to be in Nashville more than ever. Between us we may sell the place out?

I was going anyway, but we need to make it a bowl game--pack the house and have a great weekend in Nashville.

I was too but it is a must now! The family and I will be there wearing the UK Blue!

  • I'll be there. But know this. According to some of my buddies from BG a big reason why Taggert got out now is because the cupbard is pretty bare. He got out while his stock was high. Next year was always going to be a re-building year in bg. Petrino will have a very young team and a lot of first time starters when he plays us next year.

  • They better not change the date again! I know after the 2011 game the AD's said they will work to get the game on Saturday. You would think the city of Nashville would have pull in this because it would mean the difference in a bunch of $$$$.

That had to do with Tennessee State having right to first choice on date and it didn't want to move its game off Saturday date. I don't think that will be an issue again.

They will lose several starters but the cupboard is not bare by WKU standards. They have had their 2 best recruiting classes the last two years. WKU will return 4 SR OL, Antonio Andrews, their entire secondary (Dowling is pretty good), and LB Andrew Jackson. Add in the fact that DaMarcus Smith will finally be eligible this spring and competing with James Mauro who showed a little promise as a RS Fr. But, they will lose their entire starting DL, Kawuan Jakes and their TE Jack Doyle (leading receiver). WKU should be ok next year. It's unfortunate that I can't pull for them since they hired Petrino.

I live in Bowling Green, and am very familiar with their program. The cupboard is far from bare. As dustarm alludes to, they will return most of their OL, a productive back in Antonio Andrews, and some top end talent on defense in Dowling and Jackson. Mauro and Smith give them options at QB.

Regardless, I hope the Stoops' led UK team kicks Western's tails soundly in August

  • Granted they DID beat UK, but they only finished 4-4 in the SBC this season. I see us being further down the road August 31 than the 'Toppers. IMO UK wins this one by at least two tds.

From what I hear Jackson is likely to go pro...

  • I go to western, people seemed thrilled with the game, but the talent at western is a question mark. There is still some talent, but a problem is a lot of unproven players ar key positions like QB. Smith hasn't played in over 2 years and Mauro seems like he will be the starter for WKU.

Add in changing offense to a more spread with a team full of guys who aren't used to catching multiple passesa game, when 2 of the top 3 receivers were the TE Doyle and RB Andrews and only 1 true WR being in the top 3 in catches and yards.

I can see Western being a 6-6 team next year, but their secondary will once again be strong, but that Dline won't be the same and if Jackson goes, so does that stout front 7. I could see a close game, but if UK has improved under Stoops and his staff with their talent, I could also see UK winning by more than 10. I will be at the game to see a good game.

  • I havent really been keeping up on this particular subject so could someone explain why they are playing in Nashville? I have no problem with it being there at all I just dont know why they are playing the game there. My only guess would be $$$ but it would be a very nice weekend trip in the capitol of country music and KY football cant get much better than that unless I would be able to go.

WKU has a small stadium which makes the revenue loss a difficult bargain for alternating home and away games. Our away game at Nashville has a bigger purse and ends up being monetarily worthwhile. I think that is it.

Thanks for the info and that makes a lot of sense for everyone involved.

It's gonna work out this year because Stoops vs. Petrino will draw a nice crowd and generate tv buzz. But it should have never been scheduled in the first place. A home game in CWS all four years >>>>>>>>>> WKU series. Pay a real cupcake the appearance fee like almost every other school does and take your W, instead of making your fans travel to a unnecessary "away" games.

    Beavis13

  • No way I'm missing that game. Of course, I would have been there even if it was a Joker/Taggart rematch.

I don't know why Mitch didn't think of that.

Once again, since the NCAA increased the number of games to 12, the smaller schools have found that they have the larger schools over a barrel regarding scheduling. That's why you've seen Nebraska to Ohio U and others too numerous to name. We scheduled a home and home at a Pro Stadium with all the amenities and half the gate. PLEASE TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE LOGIC OF THIS.

  • Turn your caps off. I do understand the supposed logic of it. And I'd still much rather pay some bottom-feeding MAC team $500,000 to a million to come to CWS than:

    1. Play in an almost empty pro stadium in year 2 of the contract
    2. Get beat at home in year 3 of contract

In today's financial climate of college sports, those guarantees that are paid to cupcake schools are nothing. It might have been a good experiment to play away games at LP Field and Paul Brown Stadium, but it failed. What did it really get us? There have been 2 such games so far and both have been disappointing in terms of attendance. And we were damn lucky that WKU's win last year wasn't its second in a row in the series.

I think there will be a nice crowd in Nashville b/c of what someone said earlier about the BP vs new coach Stoops factor and the hope that has already exploded on the scene in the BBN. Those are reasons enough and I think the stadium will have a really big crowd both of UK and WKU fans both wanting to see how their new coaches teams will play and besides its an instate rivalry game.
