UK being honored at Reds game on Tuesday; Some people furious

  • The Kentucky basketball team is being honored for its national championship at the Cincinnati Reds' game on Tuesday night, which has apparently really rankled the Ohio side of the Kentucky/Ohio border (see link below, scroll down about halfway on right side for reader comments). Seems really silly to me, and probably just another product of today's societal norm of Internet bluster and tough guy mentality.

The Reds' market is as much NKY as it is Cincy, and especially Columbus. While I can't stand the Reds many of my closest friends are Reds' fans and huge UK fans. I don't see why this is an issue at all. Anyway, thoughts?

Life is grand. Love it! Let's hear some more OH hate.

And folks elsewhere in KY wonder why we northern types can't stand OSU. gun

  • Now if we can just win the baseball CWS.

  • Marty Brennaman is a huge UNC guy, but he's been extremely complimentary of the Cats over the years. He was close to Keightley, and at one point was under consideration to follow Cawood. (Shame he didn't get that chance.) He was heaping praise on Cal earlier this week when talking about the event honoring the team. Said Cal has done an incredible job at UK.

  • You have to sympathize with UC fans to an extent. They're wedged between OSU and UK, IU next door, with another major rival across town in X.

Sure, but apparently UC was honored for something on opening day. And the other thing is, well, win and you'll get attention. That goes for anyone or any school.

Marty called our games on TV for at least one year, maybe a couple.

  • The UC football team was honored that Opening night game.

I was there, put my UK jacket on when we were leaving after the game was over, and got cussed right in front of my 7 year old daughter by some Ohio State fans. Real classy!!!! I hope those same idiots are at the game Tuesday.

At least the Reds front office recognizes the fact they have fans in KY.

    Hooplehead

  • Cincinnati is closer to Lexington than Columbus, thus, more UK fans. The people that are complaining are just jealous. My daughter, who grew up in Lexington got a degree from UC, but, now lives and works in Cincy hears about it all the time. She's got a great job and she couldn't wait to get to work after UK won the championship. She has UK stuff all over her office and people can stand it.

You know - when this was announced, I did wonder if this would become an issue. Cincy (UC fans, OSU fans, etc) does not like UK or the state of Kentucky at all. I'd be willing to bet there will be some boos in the crowd when they are announced.

  • I'm going to the game just because UK is being honored. I bet there will be a lot of blue there

    Keepin in fresh since 1986.

  • Ralph Hacker felt so threatened he ran Marty off. He did a great job the one year he was here. I'm a big Tom Leach fans so all's well.

I remember those. He was great at it. He and Ralph Hacker didn't get along, though, so it led to some hard feelings and Marty no longer doing games.

Ole' Ralph knew he couldn't hold a candle to Marty. Ralph, in my opinion was one of the worst.

Not to mention part of Cincinnati statistically is KY. There's nothing unique about Lexington to being a UK fan.

Marty also loves UK, I have played many rounds of golf with Mr. MB and he follows the Cats every game.
He told me once that it is easy to be a basketball fan if you love the two best programs in Basketball. :0

also of note: Mr. MB and Joe B. Hall are also very good friends.
Like Mr. MB said tonight to me, why all the hate ? the Reds are just as much a KY team as an Ohio team.

Mr. Keightley loved his reds like I do. He is why MB started watching UK in the 70's lol. And Mr. Keightley was the one trying to get Marty to take over for Cawood. But Marty knew it would be hard to follow such a legend.

Mr. Hacker knew that Marty was being asked to take over for Mr. Ledford, and he hated MB for that reason. He thought that a baseball man had no place taking over for a legend.

  • All I know, is that it was great to see former Red and one of my favorite all-time Yankees in Paul O'Neil at a game in Rupp this season.

He analyzes games for the Yanks (along with 10 other players) on YES and every now and again he speaks highly of UK hoops and how his boys follow the team.

Ohio idiots should get over it.

On the other hand, Boomer Esiason who host the #1 sports radio show in NYC blasts UK, the program and Jerry Claiborne anytime the word Kentucky comes up...

I live in Cincinnati. The vast majority of the hate up here is from OSU fans (including UC fans that are also OSU fans - you'd be surprised how many there are that root for both). As a result, I have learned to really dislke OSU (UC doesn't bother me). OSU hates UK because it's in the SEC and they can't beat an SEC team in any meaningful football or basketball game. I had T-shirts made up a couple of years ago knocking off the OSU logo. The big "O" with script across it that read "And Nine", referencing their then record against the SEC in bowl games. The reaction was great. Beating them last year in the Sweet Sixteen was fanatastic, as was watching their Final Four fall apart. What the Reds did was, in a word, awesome.
