just curious, but what happened to the "money won't be an issue" train of thought? I assume we probably couldn't guarantee future investments?

Most of the time when statements like "money won't be an issue" are made it means that money won't be "the issue". If this candidate is BP I would imagine that there are other issues in play besides the money.

Per someone that absolutely knows what's going on, UK approached a very proven headcoach with MAJOR SEC ties about the opening this week. This is a guy that would fall into the proverbial "HOME RUN" hire. The candidate's camp told UK they would need Calipari type money and assurances of future investments. The discussion ended right there.

    BS!

  • Lets just say for a second your statement is true. Nowit would be my guess that BP is talking to another SEC school. They ate probably not offering as much ad he wants. So what do you do, leak a story about your interest in another SEC job and say they are offerring you X number of dollars. The other school then offers more money

Do you really think other SEC schools care what UK does or offers? LOL other SEC program look at UK football like we look at Ole Miss BB. They will offer what they feel he's worth regardless of offers from other schools.

I'm not convinced other SEC schools are looking at Petrino right now.

Minter if this is true then Mitch has lied to us all. I've been a Mitch supporter but to say money won't be an issue then to turn around and use it as an excuse to not bring in the best available coach out there, then he has lost my support.

    footballcat65

  • Also, as to assurance of future investments, no matter wheter Mitch would like to or not, he cann ot guarantee anything here. The best he can say is we will guarantee that we go to the legislature and ask for X amount of dollars and it looks pretty promising we'll get it. He can't make any ironclad guarantees though.

Assuming what Minter said is true, BP has called and demanded he be paid nearly the same as Nick Saban less than a year after being dismissed, for cause, from a major state university due to a hiring scandal and repeated lies to the administration in an attempt to cover up the accident, the hiring, and the $20,000 cash gift to his mistress.

BP was being paid a little over $3.5 million as Arky's head coach. If he wants "Calipari" money, he's asking for a raise of over $1 million per year in the same calendar year that he was fired for cause from the University of Arkansas.

I'm not assuming what Minter said is true. But if you do, and you blame Mitch Barnhart for not wanting to give a monstrous raise to a man who was terminated for cause 7 months ago, I don't think you're as big a supporter as you claim to be.

  • WE are to good to hire BP but WE will set back and let another SEC school get him without trying? Im sorry but I think he knows he cannot screw up again and do a good job.

I stick by what I said. He flat said money will not be a isssue. And yes I have always been a big Mitch supporter.

The point is that money is not the issue. Overpaying someone who was terminated for cause is the issue.

Think logically for a moment. Does FBCat65, the new AD at the University of Imaginary, give BP a 33% raise after he was terminated for cause?

Great point. I'm sure Mitch would have no problem paying somemone Cal money if they were coming off a National Championship and had been to the final four 3 out of the last 5 years. Petrino has done none of those things ever and is unemployed. Anyone that would give him a raise is a ridiculously bad businessman. He may or may not get an SEC job, but he will need to start a lower income level with higher expectations than he had at Arkansas, b/c he is a huge liability risk at this point in time. Basically a lawsuit waiting to happen.

  • All that is happening in this thread is minter continuing his agenda. His info in uk football is never accurate. He's picked a "big name" out that he knows likely wont be at uk and starts a rumor saying that Barnhart could get him except he won't pay.
    Pure silliness.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner JD. Anyway in the situation you presented, Hell yes I hire the man! I'll list my reasons below.

    1. He's never had trouble with NCAA.
    2. Can he risk being humiliated again by having another affair and risking his career? No.
    3. The man can flat coach and has been a winner everywhere he's been in college football.
    4. See Forbes article. He raised Arkansas' football revenue 59%.
    5. #4 more than offsets his salary.
    6. I can but a buy out clause in the contract to assist #5.
    7. Season tickets sell out in record fashion.
    8. Local businesses love me because of influx of fans during football season.
    9. Helps my job security.
    10. He's actually less of a risk than someone like Dykes because I know Petrino can win in the SEC.

I can go on but I think that's enough.

I agree with you fbc65. I don't see the risk either. Jim Rome is right they need each other.

The question wasn't whether you would hire him, flatly. Would you hire him if it meant you had to pay him 33% more than the salary he was earning when he was terminated for cause while exposing his employer to numerous EEOC and sexual harrassment lawsuits?

If your answer to that question is still yes, you need to rethink reason #9, because there's no way in hell that helps your job security.

Hire BP for less money while demanding an iron-clad buyout and termination schedule in the contract after adequate assurances that he will keep his nose clean? Sure.

Give him a raise, allowing him to dictate the terms of the contract? Get real.
